If we're talkng about acomplishments Rocky versus Tyson then i think the fact Marciano was never beaten, plus he beat Walcott twice, Louis, Moore, Charles. How can Tyson compare to that?
Cuz moore walcott and louis were old. If you want to do that then i will count tyson's win over holmes. The funny thing is that larry holmes is a much better boxer than walcott, ezzard and archie at heavy. He also beat michael spinks and he was the linear champ. Tyson has beat more Contenders than rocky has, 35/49 marciano wins are against D level bums that were nothing at any point of thier career.

Of course u should count Holmes. Why wouldnt you?
But still, that leaves Tyson beating Holmes and Spinks versus Marciano beating Walcott, Charles, Moore and Louis.
Eventhough they were old, Marciano still stopped all of them.
Wen Tyson faced an over the hill Holyfield he got TKO'd.

For me, wen comparing acomplishments, i think it probably comes down to the fact that Tyson was beaten by fighters he was expected to beat. Whereas Marciano beat every fighter he ever faced.

Ok, you can make a case that rocky beat more greats. However, that still doesn't prove the point of this entire thread which is tyson being overrated, cuz he isn't.

        • overrated is a relaive term.

"MIKE TYSON IS THE GREATEST FIGHTER AND/OR HEAVYWEIGHT WHO'S EVER LIVED!".....this is an example of Mike being "overrated".

"Mike Tyson was a bum and doesn't deserve to be mentioned alongside the greats, much less compared to them."....this is an example of Mike being "underrated".

To say he's "overrated" would be dependent upon how many people actually believe the first statement.

I agree that the term bum is overused, i mean most idiots call a boxer a bum if he isn't a hall of fame caliber fighter.

I'd honesly say it's probably about 50/50 because many younger fans and those who grew up watching him fight and never studied those who came before usually overrated him, while, on the flipside, becuase Mike was a polarizing personality, about as many people hated him as liked him...and if they hate him, they usually underrate him IMO.

I wasnt suggesting Tyson is overrated. Somehow the discussion moved onto Marciano and Tyson.
But like K-DOGG stated, Tyson is overrated by some, and underrated by others.

Tyson's career is fresh in the minds of many, his career highs and lows as are the usual excuses like out of the ring turmoil etc....Tyson will likely be treated more objectively in later years, the criticisms will be less harsh and the praise will be a little lesss glowing as he can be studied better with an open mind. I think Tyson is likely just outside the top 10.

Personally I've always thought Tyson would have a chance to stop many great heavyweights inside of 5 rounds. After 5 when adaptabilty, change of game plan, determination, mental toughness, etc...must increase, Tyson would falter against most if not all. His style was based primarily on overwhelming and getting his opponent out of their ASAP. Other punchers like Louis, Liston, Marciano, Frazier showed much more patience and were content to break their man down. Tyson also didn't handle adversity well and was too dependant on what his trainers told him. Truly great fighters have the ability to solve, outsmart and outwit their difficult opponents and I never saw Tyson do that.
