      Moore was before my time but I followed Reid's career and before his fight with Tito I recall the comparisons to Davey being made. I wonder if they moved Reid quick because they knew that eye injury he suffered in the 1995 Olympic trials was a ticking time bomb.

      He had decent success early against Trinidad (as many before him) but ultimately his eye and his inexperience failed him. It's a shame his career went the way it did because he seemed like a smart and decent guy with some incredible talent.

        That bout was televised live. As a Durán fan it was a beyond exciting bout. Duran displaying ATG skills in defeating an opponent he was expected to lose to.

        Moore died tragically when he was run over by his own car when he forgot to put it in gear as it rolled down his driveway pinning him on his chest. He lived only a short drive from where I live today.

          Olympic gold medal winner and was touted to be the next Sugar Ray Leonard but Duran put a stop to those plans and ruined Moore's career.

            The word was that's exactly why they pushed Reid along. They wanted to make as much money as quickly as possible.

            Last I heard, which was a few years ago, now...he wasn't doing very well at all. Sad story.

                "DAVEY MOORE"

                by Phil Ochs

                It was out to California young Davey Moore did go
                To meet with Sugar Ramos and trade him blow for blow
                He left his home in Springfield, his wife and children five;
                The spring was fast approaching, it was good to be alive
                His wife, she begged and pleaded, "you have to leave this game
                Is it worth the bloodshed and is it worth the pain? "
                But Davey could not hear above the cheering crowd
                He was a champion, and champions are proud
                Hang his gloves upon the wall, shine his trophies bright clear
                Another man will fall before we dry our tears
                For the fighters must destroy as the poets must sing
                As the hungry crowd must gather for the blood upon the ring

                And thousands gave a roar when Davey Moore walked in
                Another man to beat, another purse to win
                And all along the ringside, a sight beyond compare

                The money-chasing vultures were waiting for their share
                He stood there in his corner and he waited for the bell;
                The signal of the struggle of two men facing hell;
                And when the bell was sounded, the blows began to rain
                And blows will lead to hate -- hate drives men insane

                The fists were flying fast and hard, the sweat was pouring down
                And Davey Moore grew weaker with every passing round
                His legs began to wobble and his arms began to strain
                He fell upon the canvas floor, a fog around his brain
                At last the fight was over, young Davey fought no more
                He lost the final battle behind a doctor's door
                And back at the arena, the screaming crowd is gone
                And death is waiting ringside, for the next fight to come on

                -PHIL OCHS

                Yes, both Dylan and Ochs, friendly rivals, sang about Davey Moore.

                Famously ("Thin Wild Mercury" Todd Snider) the friendship sputtered when Dylan spat, "Phil, you're not a writer, you're just a journalist."

                Years later, Phil was able to get Bob to perform at "The Evening for Allende" concert, and, "there but for fortune," Phil nearly was brought along on Bob's "Rolling Thunder" tour.

                Perhaps a thread on "great boxing songs..." Although that might be dominated by one by Paul Simon...

                  Roberto is not the man you face with only 12 fights under your belt...Duran was to savage in every department to mess with.

                      With a thumb. And Davey lost to Donald Curry in the finals of the 1980 Olympic trials. Though a pro fight between the two would have been very interesting.
