Davey Moore only had 12 fights while defending against Duran...

Man, i just noticed this watching the intros. I know theres always talk of fighters being rushed too early and bearning out late and i dont' think I've heard Moores name when this subject is brought up. With 12 fights, even though they thought Duran was finished as a fighter is still a risky fight. This would mean that Moore won his title in his 11th fight.

Who here had followed Moores career and can give some insight to what his career was all about? Like did people see him in the same light people saw, say L.Spinks, Vargas or Tszyu, - I mention Spinks cause he too got a title shot early and beat Ali so im assuming they looked at him highly from the get go? Cause Moores record and his quick run to a title would indicate that Moore was a gifted fighter to be fighting for a title so soon and winning a title.

Moore was supposedly very talented for such a young fighter due to a good amateur career and really good abilities; but I would liken him being rushed along to the now defunct career of David Reid. Moore had at least one quality win before Duran in Davey Moore; but you must remember to keep it in perspective. Duran was almost considered shot at the time Moore signed to fight him. He'd quit against Leonard, lost to Benitez and an unknown Englishman named Kirkland Lang, so he was supposed to be a stepping stone for Moore, oddly enough.

I'd heard a story from someone who was actually in Duran's training camp before the Moore fight who said Duran made a point to say he was going to thumb Moore before the end of the first round...and laughed about it. He knew he was a man about to fight a babe.

I feel for Moore for that night. Duran ****d him in just about every sense of the word....and hardly anyone saw it coming.

I have only seen two Moore fights. Besides the one against Duran, I saw the one when he won the belt from Tadashi Mihara and he looked very skilled in there, but Mihara was nowhere near Duran's class and versatility. Moore looked like a fighter with potential, but that fight against "El Cholo" really ended him. Duran was classic that night.

The Benitez win was a strange one. Moore floored who fell awkwardly and broke his ankle. When Benitez got up he couldn't put any weight on it and was immobile. He just stayed on the ropes and tried to slip Moores punches periodically lifting and shaking his foot and the ref stopped it. A bit of a freak win.

Moore had an impressive win over tough and experienced Ayub Kalule and a good KO over hard hitting Gary Guiden going into the Duran fight but was ultimately too inexperienced and Duran had a lot more left in the tank than people knew. In addition to the thumb Moore also had dental surgery before the fight. Either way he was going to lose anyway.

Moore slowly started to slide and took a real pasting by Lupe Aquino on the undercard of Leonard-Hagler. His career was all but over after that one. It was a sad end to a once promising boxer.
