What a brilliantly written and very well observed article.
Delfine will almost certainly out-strength, out-fight and wear Katie down. She possesses advantages over Katie in nearly every department of physicality (height, bigger frame, rangier punches, heavier punching and far higher punch output, much fitter and durable, far better punch resistance and battle hardened, lot harder and stiffer jab, Very good on her feet with constant and purposeful movement, Very strong in clinches and able to very easily physically wrestle Katie about bully her). Delfine is a quite brilliant boxer, who has an incredible record winning 44 of 46 fights. There are many tough fighters in there too (with examples including Christina Linardatu, Maiva Hamadouche, Melissa St Vil, Helen Joseph, Diana Prazak- the lady who interestingly best the woman who beat Amanda Serrano. This is mightily impressive to gain so many victories over so many fights and many of them tough. Imagine Katie having 46 professional fights and consider whether she would have the stamina and toughness to have came through so well as Delfine.
I think Delfine will have reflected long and hard this time in his she could have applied even more pressure on Katie, and will time her training much better this time to come in at the correct lightweight limit and not significantly below it as before: and that she will be even stronger still if she can do this.
Interesting point about the leniency of the referee letting the fight play out so physically, with many punches and roughing up in clinches taking place. I noticed it at the tine, and thought it most definitely supported Delfine throughout the fight (but not at the start of round ten, when she kept the fighters apart whilst the first ten seconds or so of the round tucked by before allowing them to fight. Choice of referee may have some beating I agree.
I just can't see Katie overcoming Delfine 's so clear advantages in physicality, and as Delfine is so adept and schooled in fully harnessing her supreme fittness, toughness, size and strength, Katie will reluctantly find herself being forced to fight Delfine 's kind of fight, and that involves having a almost unimaginably physical and rough fight.
I would like to elaborate on why Delfine Persoon is so smoking hot.
I found myself attracted to her cute and sweet personality during the build up to her fight with Katie Taylor. I kept thinking how lovely her accent was and just how naturally pretty and beautiful she was.
It was when I saw her strip off at the weigh in that my already strong admiration intensified onto another level. She has the most amazing perfect physique imaginable, and her body is incredibly muscular and strong! When she posed on the scales, and tenced her biceps, I found myself squealing with delight as her enormous muscles bulged and looked so strong and hot.
I cheered her for every second of her fight with Katie Taylor, and was so impressed with her unbelievable toughness and strength. She was too good and too strong for Katie Taylor, and it broke my heart that after her incredible performance that she still lost. She was robbed, and I couldn't help crying, and when Delfine cried my tears became sobs. I so much wanted to cuddle her, look her in the eyes, tell her everything would be okay, and tenderly nurse her cuts, bruises and swelling. I just wanted her to feel better.
I find Delfine just so adorable and incredibly hot, hot , hot! ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
That was the most exciting fight of the year by a considerable margin. The slickness, strength and power of Savannah Marshall was incredible, and Clarissa Shields was just so sublime, tough and talented. Women's boxing is just getting so good that it is skyrocketing. In fact, the women are actually exceeding the man for exceeding the men and will increasing top more and more bills with men on as their fights will be much more gruelling and exciting, and it is not even close.
More evidence that the coward serrano doesn't have power and certainly not at 135. Katie will beat her again because serrano won't be able to hurt Katie. Let's enjoy watching the greatest female fighter ever in Katie Taylor as I think she'll retire after she beats serrano again. Bad news for Mikaela and the Baum Gardner, that huge payday will be gone when Katie retires. Unfortunately female boxing will fall of a cliff once Katie is gone. Expect the TV networks to lose interest when you don't have Katie Taylor.
I saw things otherwise, as Sereano showed tremendous toughness and heart against a very strong opponent, as Cruz really fought hard and hit her with damaging shots. Serrano got bust up in there, but she seemed to hurt Cruz even worse. As for Katie Taylor, as fabulous a fighter as she is, Mother time is definitely putting dents into her, and Serrano will do so again, as she still hits harder and crisper than Taylor IMO.
Katie is looking good, but recent performances have showed signs of decline. Her resume is nonetheless far superior to that of Serrano, and I pick Taylor to win on points.
Wow, what a fight. Tash just about did enough for me, as she landed the better punches, had Harper in far more trouble than vice versa and managed to force the better boxer to fight and frequently hold on for dear life.
If we are lucky enough to see a rematch, Tash now knows that she can stop Harper. Seriously doubt that Harper will fancy fighting Jonas again, but money certainly is a great persuader.
I have to agree with Natasha that if she lands clean Terri will go, as she is such a strong woman. Her record demonstrates KO power too. Problem is that Terri is a quite brilliant boxer. I think that Natasha needs to turn the fight ugly and physical, and wear Terri down with her strength. One hopes that she posesses the engine for this though.
I have been heavily into women's boxing since Katie Taylor vs Delfine Persoon wowed me so in 2019, but I am astonished and absolutely delighted that two women are headlining at Madison Square Garden!
After Saturday, I am sure that top male professionals will regularly appear on the cards of women.
As for this fight, I had Taylor winning on points, and still do marginally, but Serrano looks so athletic and powerful. Should be a great fight
This would be a very intriguing fight, as Shields is such a skilled boxer who is tough, and Jonas is herself highly skilled in her approach, based more perhaps on timing, physical strength and heavy punching. I absolutely love Jonas' style, but given she is accustomed to the weight, has wirhstood and reigned against the destructive power of Savannah Marshall, Shields must start as clear favourite I concede.
Another spine tinglingly amazing fight. Katie definitely coped with the relentless and blistering pressure far better this time and wasn't ground down. She was still however completely powerless to slow it down, and as a result was completely out worked. I scored the fight as at 96 94 to Persoon. She may have ended the fight disappointed with her performance as she wasn't able to almost completely physically wear Katie down, but once she watches the fight back, she should see that she won again and be incredibly proud.
Chantelle Cameron as Amanda Serrano's replacement opponent is as tough as it gets IMO and is just wow. Katie has a tremendous resume and her bravery is to be admired. Chantelle Cameron at this stage of Katie's career though is a huge huge ask for her to prevail, as Chantelle is the naturally bigger woman, stronger physically, exceptionally tough, great footwork, punch picking, boxing, brawling, excellent chin, great fitness level, all round elite boxing skills, and crucially, is in her absolute prime probably. When I listed hypothetical opponents the other day to step in for Amanda, I mentioned Chantelle, adding that I thought she would be too risky. Katie has done risky before though, but this maybe more than she can chew, but despite this feeling, I am in love with this fight (should it happen).
The rise of women's boxing is just mind blowing, and for me is already more action packed and exciting than the men's. My favourite fighters to watch are Delfine Persoon and Terri Harper, with Natasha Jones, Ebanie Bridges, Savannah Marshall and Chantelle Cameron not being far behind. Michaela Mayer, Raven Chapman, Erin Canderoos, Christina Linardatu, Clarissa Shields and too many other lady boxers being super talented and interesting to watch.
Bamguardener is perhaps the most explosive fighter in women's boxing, strong as an ox and heavy handed. These attributes can be very wearing on her stamina. Mayer, like Clarissa Shields, is just so effortless and controlled, yet incredibly tough. These ladies styles gelled perfectly for the fight of the year contender they produced.
PS. A very bad march up for Bamguardener IMO would be Delfine Persoon, who would most likely more than match her physically, but would be tougher, busier, throw more solid punches and can box and brawl. Great fight though.
On the face of it, it is a real shame that Shields vs Jonas won't be happening anytime soon as it would be a fantastic fight between contrasting styles. Natasha would possibly lose on pounts, but she would ask some serious questions of Clarissa, and it would turn into a tough affair I suspect. Jonas has earned the opportunity and is skilled and powerful enough to make things very interesting.
What fantastic news. It will be wonderful to watch Rachel Ball, Terri Harper and Katie Taylor live. They are three very talented boxers and the fights will all be hugely watchable.
Great fight, but after some early fireworks, I just see Joyce being too tough and durable, and his engine will make Zang's lungs burn until he is too exhausted and beaten up. Interestingly, fight of the night on this card will probably be Mayer vs Linardatu, which will be epic I am sure.
She hits so hard, especially during fights, that her fluidly delivered power awes me to see. There are other very heavy handed rough brawler punches, such as Jessica Mccaskill and incredibly strong, awkward, mega engine brawler delfine persoon, but the slickness and back foot elisive style seems thus far unique to Savannah. Mccaskill set the blue print of how to beat a better boxer than yourself, by if you possess it, crippling hard punches and the engine and toughness to keep up the intensity. Delfine persoon posesses this too.
If it is an uninspiring on paper fight, Natasha Jonas will still deserve chief support status, but if a challenging fight, it should be co main easily. Jonas handled herself superbly against both Terri Harper and Katie Taylor, and whoever she fights, will likely upstage Eubank vs Smith.
I am so looking forward to this fight, I cannot wait in fact.
I am always wowed by just how talented that Clarissa Shields is, she always wins at a canter and makes fighting look ridiculously easy. She is clearly very strong and durable too.
Savannah Marshall meanwhile is just a wow-factor puncher, who is so crisp hitting and powerful. She has the best timing and punch technique I have ever seen in women's boxing, by a long long way in fact.
The best boxer vs the best puncher. Best fight of 2022 for me. Go girls
Excellent accomplishment for Natasha Jonas, and absolutely superb photos in this article. They really capture the action and intensity of this encounter.
I tend to agree with Mayer that being outboxed by Linardatou over 12 rounds dosent bode well. Baumgardner was too powerful for Terri Harper to handle on the night, but Linardatou is incredibly strong physically, whereas Mayer will likely prove too tough for Baumgardner to KO, but will comprehensively outbox her too, resulting in her being way too much for Baumgardner to handle.
She is quite right that Shields does not really sit down on her punches and as such cannot be considered a power puncher. Shields has an incredible engine, skills and toughness though, and she systematically beats opponents down.
The rise of women's boxing since 2019 has been meteoric. It is almost becoming expected, that the most exciting and bruising card of the night will be between two women, as along with incredible levels of skill , endurance and strength, and they brawl so incredibly roughly like wild beasts, that the action is absolutely pulsating.
