Nobody in the sport can beat Canelo on a decision. Kovalev must knock him out. GGG hit Canelo good several times and couldn’t do it. Some guys are just really hard to knock out. But if Kovalev is forced to let the judges decide the fight, well, there’s very little doubt which way it’ll go.
Canelo, partly because it’s in Vegas where the judges always give him the edge, and partly because he learned so much from Mayweather’s defense. It’s •very• difficult to hit Canelo clean.
Alvarez would wreck Oscar worse than he did Saunders. Oscar is old, slow, fat, and way past his sell-by date. He has woefully provoked an angry grudge against a guy capable of literally breaking his face. How is any of this smart? Can pure greed really make a grown man that stupid?

Donaire is one of the most reliably tough, aggressive competitors in the sport today. You never, ever see a Donaire bout where he arrives at fight night unmotivated, just phoning it in. Even in losing to Inoue, he left a mark that his opponent sees in the mirror every time he checks out that curious looking right eye.
GGG is well aware that this is a tough fight for a 40-year old athlete. Like most elite fighters, Canelo is better than his haters say but not as good as his fanboys claim. GGG likewise. The chances of a knockout are low because both guys are extremely tough and have chins like an engine block. Everyone noticed that Derevyanchenko was able to hurt GGG to the body at least once. I expect Canelo to go downstairs a lot. But if GGG is looking for that and gets practiced up on a right hand counter to Canelo’s head, it could be a real game changer. It’ll be interesting to see what develops on fight night.
I’ve followed Golovkin for a number of years. Ditching Sanchez was the most disappointing and self destructive move he ever made. Nothing against Banks… but once Sanchez was out of the picture, Golovkin tried to become a slickster. That’s simply not his forté, and never was going to be.
I'm sure Golovkin has more than enough money to enable him to live like a king for life back in Kazakhstan.
In Kazakhstan, not even the king lives like a king. I was hoping to see GGG try improve his country like Pacquaio has done in the Philippines.
Dee,
The difference in physical condition between 20 and 30 isn't that much. Between 30 and 40 it gets pretty big. The difference between 40 and 50 is far, far greater. From one who knows. Oscar is just talking trash. If he got in the ring with a serious fighter in his mid to late 30s, it would be a massacre.
Let due process run its course. But if the man is found guilty of PED use -- especially multiple counts -- then he should be banned from the sport permanently. Boxing is too dangerous a sport to allow drug-fortified men to get in the ring with a clean fighter.
GGG looks old. I am not sure he pulls thisnone off.
It all depends on how GGG interacts with Banks. His trainer has been trying to convert him into a slick, weavey-dodgy, slipping, feinting, ducky-bobby guy. And that’s just not what got GGG a date to the world championship prom. He got there by straight-ahead stalk-em, corner-em, beat-em down flat. If GGG will return to that, he’ll knock out Murata. If he tries to mimic a Mayweather-style defense with crafty counterpunching and dazzling footwork, I could easily see him losing a decision.
All I know is that Wilder did better against Fury in all 3 fights than Dillian Shyte did in his one pathetic attempt.
Definitely. Everyone should remember the effect that Fury/Wilder-3 had on the winner. He said he was concussed, announced his retirement, and said some words to the effect of not wanting to end up as a drooler. Even as a victor, it took him a while to get over what Wilder did to him. In like manner, it took Wilder a long time to get over what Fury did to him. Both are huge, strong, fast, powerful men, trained to smite hard and hurt opponents badly. The damage each inflicted on the other was grave. Fury came out the winner, and props to him for that.
People can and do criticize Wilder and Fury, but the one word that doesn't apply to either one is "coward." If White wants to fight Wilder, he should try a respectful challenge, not a bunch of name-calling that leaves people eye-rolling.
After the fight with GGG, nobody wants to deal with Deryanchenko. On the other hand, Rosado is definitely not going to go easy. Tough choice for Munguia.
The fastest way to get drug cheats out of boxing is for everybody to refuse to fight him -- and say out loud why not. Any fighter with one confirmed drug bust should be banned for life, no exceptions, no second chance.
Canelo most likely will win but if you think GGG will be easy work for Canelo, you're delusional. GGG will get in his hard shots.
This is probably the most reasonable comment on here today. Even at 40 with a mild case of ring rust (and, in my opinion, not the best trainer), GGG still pounded a younger (and very tough) man down to the canvas. If the fight with Alvarez happens, you can bet Canelo won’t be looking at it as an easy paycheck, never mind what his fanboys are saying here. Age is definitely on Canelo’s side, and Canelo is a strong, fast, tough, and superbly skilled boxer. How much of that is clenbuterol, God alone knows. Although GGG is awesome for a guy of age 40, the elite quickness is now getting a nanosecond slower, which is the difference between a punch landing clean versus skidding past the head harmlessly.
In GGG’s column, one of the best jabs in boxing history, a chin like an anvil, and a motive of trying to recover what was stolen by a corrupt judge who helped the drug cheat.
In Canelo’s column, skill, quickness, youth, also a chin like an anvil, a bit tougher in the midsection, and of course, he owns the judges outright.
My tentative forecast: Canelo by UD again.
Canelo will bring you back to reality by career ending beating. :lol1:
Neither of these fighters is capable of doing that to the other. Both are very crafty fighters, hard to catch really clean, and even when they get hit clean and hard, they have both proved they are incredibly tough. Smart observers have respect for the fighting abilities of both men.
The only footnote is this: People who follow the sport wish Canelo had never gotten popped for PEDs, especially since the tests were surprises to him resulting from well-founded suspicions. I hope he’s clean now, and I hope he gets surprise-tested a couple of times between now and fight day, and I hope he comes back clean.
Is it just camera angles, or does Benavidez look quite a bit bigger than Plant?
Plant's lines about Benvidez and cocaine (get it?) are spot on. Boxing needs to clean itself up and kick out drug users -- banned for life on the first confirmed positive.
I was wrong about the judges. I figured that if Canelo was still alive at the end of the fight, the judges would award him the decision. Delighted that didn’t happen… suspect the embarrassment over the GGG decisions influenced this one.
When I was a kid getting my tail kicked in the schoolyard, I learned that the lanky, skinny-looking wiry people should be avoided. Who knows what will happen, but I tend to favor Garcia.
If I were Davis’ trainer, I’d be telling him to come in low and crouched with a peekaboo guard and then target Garcia’s solar plexus and liver continuously. There’s a good chance he could win the fight right there, and if not, it would eventually make Garcia drop his guard.
Usyk’s stamina is phenomenal. Even if Fury tries to wallow all over him, Usyk will just step aside and let Fury chase him around until he’s worn out (maybe about round 9 again?), whereupon there’s a good chance Usyk will knock him all the way out this time. Then again, Fury is a giant guy, and if he manages to tag Usyk cleanly, it could all be over in the first 30 seconds. Who knows? I’ll be anticipating the rematch.
Slow fight. Smash ending. Helenius just got too fatigued. Near the end, he was too tired to really keep his hands up and maintain a good defensive position.
The curse of the aged boxer: Can’t pull the trigger.
I’ve watched as some of the most aggressive pressure fighters got old, and then they turn into the worst mixture of styles — wading face-first into opponents (like, I’m fidna kill you!) and then waiting for an opportunity to counter. That gets ugly fast.
I don't expect Mr. Plant to be able to improve himself enough to make a difference unless and until he learns a bit of humility. He should have said, "Canelo Alvarez was the better fighter, took the best I had to give, and then he put me on my back. I will watch the video, try my best to learn from my mistakes, and give it another shot as soon as I can."
And he should not have tried to rattle Alvarez with schoolboy insults and filthy language. What does that help anyway? Trash talk won't rattle a guy who's been in as many high-profile contests as Alvarez.
Sports can offer lessons in life for everyone: Don't insult people. Watch your language. Be humble. Do your bragging after the fight, not before. Learn from your mistakes. Get up and try again, only smarter next time.
GGG beat Canelo convincingly in the first bout and reached a draw in the second. The first one was scored a draw only because one judge went primate fecal, lending a lot credence to the accusation that the "powers that be" in boxing will never let a money man like Canelo lose a fight.
I don't believe Canelo is scared of GGG at all, but I do think he's a little bit embarrassed that a a much older fighter made him look so bad. I'll be very surprised if Canelo accepts a third bout with GGG prior to Golovkin turning 40... or 40-plus-plus. Clearly GGG has a generous living space inside Canelo's head, and that must be a very satisfying place of residence for Golovkin.
As for who GGG has fought since Canelo, Dereyanchenko comes to mind -- and Canelo doesn't want any part of that guy! That fight was brutal for both men, although after the fight, Derevyanchenko looked like he'd been run over by a truck. What other aspiring fighters out there really want to risk their records by taking on GGG? Charlo comes to mind.... Any other guys whom Canelo could respect? (I didn't think so.)
The waiting game clearly disfavors GGG, however. He suffers from the malady that eventually afflicts all aging fighters, which is a hesitancy about pulling the trigger. In the second Canelo bout as well as the Derevyanchenko bout, GGG often closed the distance and covered up, waiting for his opponent to make a move so he could counterpunch. A much younger GGG closed the distance by throwing several massive punches and forcing his opponent to cover up. That change of habits really means it's time for GGG to start looking for another career as the kryptonite age of 40 draws nigh.
Being the toughest man alive, able to eat massive punches from a sledgehammer like Foreman, ultimately didn’t do Ali any favors. Poor guy had a bad exit from the accumulated punishment.
Bivol hit as hard as Mayweather?
Approximately. And he gets hit ten times as much. Love him or hate him, Mayweather very, very seldom took a clean shot from anyone. But Mr. Bivol sure does, with the occasional goose egg under the eye, etc. I’m rooting for him to win just so Canelo will be forced to remember he’s human. But it really doesn’t look good for Bivol. I’m hoping sincerely he proves me wrong and hands Canelo a convincing defeat.
Garcia is a good boxer. His mind is fragile. If he doesn't catch Tank early I believe Davis gets him late. Tank has a stronger constitution and has faced more adversity, imo. Hopefully we find out soon.
I wasn’t sure if his mind is really that delicate or if all that folderol was an act to draw YouTube viewers.
