Sergey Kovalev feels ready for a mega-bout with Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez. On Saturday night in Russia, Kovalev knocked out undefeated Anthony Yarde to retain the WBO light heavyweight title in his first defense since winning back the belt in February Click Here To Read More]
Sergay Kovalev's performance was appalling, simply awful. A bum like Anthony Yarde should never go past five rounds with any top five Light-heavyweight.
Hang them up Sergay, its over for you.
It's Sergey... as in the first word of the first sentence of this article.
As for his performance... how many fighters get caught like he did from a strong LHW, then next round turn things completely around to stop their opponent 2 rounds later? Very few. Almost always after a dicey round like that, it's the beginning of the end... if not THE end that round. He did great vs a strong challenger. Not a bad performance at all.
... People usually forget that it was Canelo who wanted Kovalev... not the other way around...
Same with Mikey. I don’t get it when there is GREAT fights at their current weight classes.
... Canelo vs Kovalev would rather be more of an "exhibition fight" -- with Kovalev getting the big "Canelo money", losing a chess-like match, and then riding into the sunset... :)
Now you're just moving the goalposts. The initial argument was about Yarde's chin, not his endurance/stamina. You just wrote a paragraph about something entirely different.
Oh, the infamous "writing about something different" police...I always thought I navigated the internet too carefully to come across your menacing breath.
P.S. Didn't you start talking about him being tired as a reason for being KO'd? Jeesus, man, even Wilder's right hand will turn into a kitten's paw if he is tired enough. What is your point? :bottle:
The jab that knocked Yarde out was not what knocked Yarde out. Yarde just had ZERO energy left at that point. He had already fell down by himself prior to the knockout.
Its a common excuse for boxers - oh, he was doing great, but just got tired as if this is something outside of boxer's control just happened - like gloves fell off or he slipped on a wet mat and broke a leg. Boxing is not a sprint-like sport, its a marathon, in marathon it doesn't matter how well you run the first 2 miles, you've got another 24 to cover and if you can't - it doesn't matter how good you are in a sprint, you just not ready. And that was very evident on Saturday. Your skills are useless if you can't apply them consistently for 36 minutes, that's where the primary challenge in this sport lies. Fighting like Mohammed Ali for 3 minutes out of 36 does not make you Mohammed Ali :)
LMAO at all the usual hurt gggroupies screaming in rage how angry they are Canelos STILL improving atg resume makes them while their favorite hypejob is cherrypicking infinitely weaker opponents & continuing the trend of accumulating vacant belts vs C levels. :haha::rofl:
Canelos already a future ATG & gstring diva borats "legacy" becomes more irrelevant with every scalp added to nelos mantle from the most prestigious fighters all around his weight class, but anyone from 154-175 wouldn't last 7 w ggg doe,if he fought em doe, which would be a waste of time anyway doe, because ATGGG doe
So far all Canelo has done is fight an aging champion, an ex victim of an aging champion, a domestic level guy who won a vacant title, and is now targeting another aging faded champion, and there's sure to be some weight draining thrown in for good measure. With all these young lions around at both hes weights, Charlo, Saunders, Andrade and Smith, plus all the young lions hes got to pick from at 175, he targets the guy whos the weakest and oldest. Golovkin fought hes young challenge, Canelo, whens Alvarez gonna fight hes young challengers?
I was pleased with Kovalev's performance. Once again he demonstrated that he's not a prime Kovalev anymore, but his experience still allows him to compete at a world class level. He's a seasoned vet and it shows. He's not wild. He throws every punch with the intent to connect and cause harm. He's not a prime Kovalev, but this Kovalev can still compete. He's not shot. He can still give a good fight but if he's going to face Canelo it has to be at the full 175 pound limit with no rehydration clause.
Nobody in the sport can beat Canelo on a decision. Kovalev must knock him out. GGG hit Canelo good several times and couldn’t do it. Some guys are just really hard to knock out. But if Kovalev is forced to let the judges decide the fight, well, there’s very little doubt which way it’ll go.
He didn't have any weight restrictions. He blew the weight came in heavy and still lost you son of a ho
How could he “blow the weight and come in heavy” if there was no weight restriction?
I didn't know about Yardes wacky training, just the same, all the things I said about Kovalev are what these guys are saying now. A rookie like Yarde got to him, Yarde just ran out of steam. Nobody told me he didn't spar.
Aging in boxing is very individual. It seems like age is catching up with Kova a bit faster than expected. Clearly he is not in his prime anymore. He is still a force, but I'm not sure he can hang in for 12 rounds with the other champs in the division.
Jacobs without weight restrictions would beat clen. Clen will use weight restrictions to Kovalev. No way. He didn't have any weight restrictions. He blew the weight came in heavy and still lost you son of a ho
...
No need to fight Canelo, no need to see this ****. i don`t care about mismatches. Canelo is 2 divisions smaller man.
I don`t see it that way. Canelo never fought someone as big as Kovalev is. You guys say Canelo will beat Kovalev with body shots, but you are forgetting that Kovalev would have a huge reach advantage. next, Kovalev is much bigger puncher than anybody Canelo fought.
You can`t be serious if you think canelo can beat Kovalev at 175.
I cant see in what universe Canelo can win this fight, other than controversially again. He is far too small, has the power of a welterweight and will either be knocked out or totally schooled. But like many of his other dubious fights he has probably bought the judges off.
I think alot of folks will be surprised. Kovalov was not interested in the yard fight. He is interested in Canelo. Yard is big and strong younger then Canelo. It will be a completely different fight. Kovalov is 50 times better then feilding and he can still box and is naturally bigger. I thinking that Canelo will be more causious when he feels krushers power. Make this fight now
Canelo will lose to Kovalov and I'm a Canelo fan. Canelo had enough problems with GGG's jab and Kovalov is MUCH bigger and his jab won't be off the back foot.
... People usually forget that it was Canelo who wanted Kovalev... not the other way around...
He was knocked out by a jab, how is his chin great? He did show a ton of heart though. I'd be surprised if he doesn't become a champ within 5 years. He should also consider switching trainers or start doing sparring. Tunde's no sparring policy is bizzare and unprecedented in the sport. If only the result proved that there might be something to it.

Canelo doesn't stand a chance against Kovalev, he has no power. He's extremely overrated in many ways. Bodywork is good but not enough to hurt Kovalev badly, especially since he doesn't have the ability to get inside of a guy as long and strong as Kovalev is. He'll be heavier too so he won't move as quickly, his feet were never that fast and his upper body will be less flexible. I see him getting stopped.
Any other fighter at 160lb that can challenge Kovalev?
Kovalev is done. And do you believe clen will fight Kovalev without any weight restrictions? Clen used weight restrictions even with Jacobs.
Yarde has the potential to go the distance with any of the current LHW champs.
He was totally outclassed by Kovalev skill wise, winning only 2-3 rounds of the 11, but he showed a great chin and plenty of heart.

Beterbiev likely decapitates Yarde in 5 rounds. Kovalev was very cautious with Yarde until he started to gas. Beterbiev would have gone for the kill right away.
And it is not similar to Garcia vs Spence. Garcia fought prime Spence.
But clen is going to fight an old man.. who was knocked out by another Alvarez...
Why doesn't he fight Andrade or Bivol or Smith or Saunders?
Kovalev will throw punches to the air all night. Because he is old&slow. clen has better defence and he is faster. clen by UD.
Why does clen fight only old guys?
