Look carefully ... Bivol stellar technique covered everything most of the time... There was often nothing to hit but the arm... What you saw on Saturday was a Boxing Masterclass ... I'm still amazed at how good Bivol was ...
I was actually surprised how bad Canelo looked he gassed early and was running hot from all the water weight he had onboard, Bivol did an Ottke on an overweight much smaller fighter, for me if Bivol was next level he should have stopped Canelo being that far ahead in all areas.
If you look at the Kov and Plant fights if Canelo doesn't stop them he loses a UD, it was all about Canelo landing hard on Bivol and the skills with giving away a major size difference was too much he couldn't do it.

He wasn't gonna land if he aimed for Bivol's head. He either had to hit the body or somewhere else to weaken Bivol to get him to open up that guard he had.
If he just tried head shots he would probably get countered by Bivol. He has that lazy left hiok when he pulls back so he would likely catch Canelo reaching.
This is why he did it he was trying to break through the guard, if you fight somebody where you cannot land on the chin or the ribs you have no choice but to pound on arms, chest and thighs to try and create openings to vital spots, take away weapons and slow the leg movement.
That arm needed to come down before he had access to the side of Bivol's head. He tried over and over and over again to get around that guard but Bivol wasn't gonna open that door. Bivol's defense was unwavering.

Its true. That littreally only would work on lesser fighters. Guys that have quit in them....bivol simply didn't care and continued beating canelo. Folding under arm hitting is for lower fighters......canelo wasn't serious.
That was surely a waste of energy and if it was the only game plan it was dumb asf. From the looks of it there was no plan B so it possibly could have been.
As the other two posters suggested, Canelo tried to hurt Bivol's arm so he wouldn't be able to punch with it. Also, when the arm is throbbing in pain and blood is rushing to it and making it swell, it's hard to hold it up to guard.
Yeah, he trying to fatigue the arm so Bivol could lower it. Would've been an easy opening for a right hook if it worked

Canelo tried to injure his arm like he did Callum Smith arm and it almost worked...the problem is that Canelo didn't have enough time in the fight for it to take effect. Let me explain what I mean.
Bivol did a interview Sunday morning after the fight and he said that he had a bruise on his arm from Canelo punching it and that he can't even throw a jab right now. Bivol said that had the fight been 15 rounds, he would not have been able to use his arm.
He said Canelo punch to his arm hurts bad.
I'm guessing it makes you less likely to use that arm as well as fatigues you, which to Canelo's credit did cause Bivol to lower his jab output but to Bivol's credit he buckled down and was able to commit to combination punching with it.
