Deontay Wilder was undefeated with a way higher knock out ratio. Roy Jones Jr was 49-1 with a $20m net worth. Danny Garcia and Errol Spence aren't close to making as much as Floyd even though they're currently elite welterweights. How was Floyd Mayweather able to make so much money?
Floyd is struggling for money right now amidst the pandemic.
His rinky dink club appearances are as of now defunct so he can’t collect that $20K appearance anymore.
He was big but more or less liked by many hated by few.
Mayweather was more of a love him or hate him guy. A lot of people paid to see him lose. And then when he kept winning it just builds, people hoping maybe next time is the time he loses.
Mayweather played the heel role, similar to Hamed, similar to Ali who modled his promotional persona from Georgous George the wrestler when he noticed people would pay hoping to see you lose.
Oscar had the females creaming in their pants and ordering PPV just because he was hot. I went to a couple fight parties and heard them say that I was like whaaaaaaat hahaha floyd never had the ladies
Either way floyd knee what he had to do to sell fights and he did it and props to him
you seem to forget that he asked bob arum to get him that fight earlier...and bob said no and that hed lose money on the deal
Idiot point is floyd needed Oscar to make him a super star facts! You just proved my point pendejo Floyd knew he had to fight Oscar to elevate to elite PPV status. Oscar did the same for manny but that good boy philanthropic bs never sells as much as the hated villian
What about Oscar De la Hoya? He was the biggest pay per view star before Mayweather.
He was big but more or less liked by many hated by few.

You seem to forget without Oscar there is no money Mayweather. Can’t stand people that think floyd was this mastermind that came up with ppv by himself and fail to see he was given the opportunity by the biggest name in the game at the time.

First time I saw him fight at the lighter weighs I was stunned at how good this guy was. At the higher weights and with his style change I still respected him but not quite as much. He got the job done because he was incredibly talented and a gym rat. Al Haymon may have advised him in his career but Floyd was the guy in the ring and he delivered.
He knew how to market himself and cut out the middle man
I think you pretty much said it the best. Floyd is a great boxer obviously but what impresses me even more than his boxing prowess is his ability to make money. His father and uncle were in the game so it's a family affair. Floyd has an uncanny feel for the ins and outs of promoting. I can't explain it but that man has unlocked the secrets of how to make money in this sport. He figured out how to cut out all the blood sucking middle men and keep the majority of the money he rightfully won for himself. I must admit I am one of those boxing fans that wanted to see Floyd take an L just because he was too damned good but I have to take my hat off to that man because he is the top P4P of all time in maximizing profits in combat sports
just look at it like this, who is the one being talked about on here day in and day out nonstop?

It helped that Oscar gave him the big fight and Floyd started promoting himself.
WWE also gave him popularity that other won't get being just a fighter.
60% of Floyd’s wealth from 2010+ decade was from the PAC and McGregor bout...
well...yeah....but he took home close to a half a billion dollars in those two fights....he was the a-side in both of them taking home the bigger slice of the pie...
i mean think about...nearly a half a billion in 2 fights
For starters he fought good, tough fights earlier in his career. 130-135lb he had already built a hell of a resume, he had earned his stripes in this period of his career as one of the best fighters p4p. This earned him legitimacy
Gatti fight - Top Rank did a great job by getting Floyd this fight before others (Tszyu, Hatton, Judah, Cotto) everyone wanted him because he was the cash cow in the division. It propelled Floyd to another level in terms of profile.
Kept winning, and still fighting good competition, with some duds.
Oscar De La Hoya fight - like the Gatti fight but onto another level. Oscar was THE cash cow in boxing even though by this time he was a part time fighter, he was still Blockbuster, one of the few crossover stars in boxing. Absolute must win fight for Floyd, which he did. The 24/7 put him on the map as the premier villain in boxing, and that was a great move as far as marketing himself. He now had the baton.
It just grew and grew from this point, Hatton, etc etc every win made him bigger. The 2 year absence actually helped as well I think.
Build up to Pac fight - just created so much anticipation that it actually helped both guys ppv numbers and the controversy of the fight not happening made more and more people talk about it.
But through it all - he kept winning.
Side note - the whole playing the villian, dividing opinion, the brash arrogant money mayweather persona. I think much of that was taken from Naseem Hamed's playbook, just Floyd took it to another level.

He was a true business man and knew how to market his product himself.
Floyd Mayweather was active during a great era in welterweight boxing 'In fact the 2000's was a great time for boxing, outside of the heavyweights'.
The sport of boxing back in the 2000's was not built around 1 fighter, there were multiple mega stars. I also think Mayweather was so successful because he was great, this may sound cliché 'But if you are truly great at something, you will generate income'.
Carl Lewis took track and field athletics from a amateur sport and made it professional 'He was flying around in private jets, and was a superstar on a global scale all because he was great at his craft'.
Deontay Wilder may have a higher KO percentage, but is he really a great fighter? Wilder is a extremely limited fighter, I would rank his technical ability no higher than a novice/Intermediate level.
He was very popular and people payed to watch him fight and some paid to watch his fights in hopes he would lose because he was well loved and well hated as well. He had great ring skill that is rarely seen.
