I said on this forum that Wilder was wrong about being the best heavyweight ever and Mike Tyson would have knocked him the spark out. Mohammed Ali would have made him look silly and possibly stopped him also.
Some disagreed with me and were saying silly things like Wilder would KO Mohammed Ali in two or three rounds.
All I can say is, if Fury (a great boxer, maybe the best of this generation) could beat up Wilder, I think it’s safe to say I was right — Mo Ali and Mike Tyson would have had a field day!
Wilder wasn’t a great champion or anything, but he’s a giant with arguably the most powerful straight right ever seen. He would’ve been a tough out for most historical heavies. Ali was possibly the greatest heavweight of all time (a toss up between him and Joe Louis, in my opinion), but he never fought anyone as tall as Deontay. He probably would’ve been content to outpoint the much taller man (Ali was 6’3”), while avoiding that Wilder missile. Tyson probably would’ve bored right through Deontay. Wilder’s skills wouldn’t have been enough to hold off the early onslaught, and that relentless Tyson inside game would’ve had him crashing down inside four rounds.
Wilder made those claims while losing round after round to 2nd tier fighters and lower. Then the 1st top fighter he faces he gets demolished.
He can speak it and believe it all he wants. Reality says different.
And those hype came at the back of him stopping Ortiz in a rematch no one wanted. In reality anyone can beat anyone at HW if you have something special about you. I just didn’t think Wilder had proved that he was good enough to beat Tyson or Ali in their primes, I understood the weight difference that everyone brings up when making that argument but to be honest, Wilder himself isn’t a big HW.
Yeah I remember a bunch of posters agreeing that he would beat Tyson and Ali, the reality is now that Wilder has lost in comprehensive fashion people will backtrack and say "AHHHH no one said that man". I remember a lot of posters saying Ali would be too small and that he's never been hit by someone like Wilder and hey it made sense to them at the time but don't expect many of them to ever own up to those predictions.
Very few thought Wilder would beat Tyson or Ali. Hell there is always a few that say this guy or that guy is the best of all time including fans of internet boxing stars.
Prime Tyson swarmed. Wilder's height would had troubled him but that sit back style of Wilder would had not worked against Tyson.
