A quick turn around and a big change from his normal (2 fights a year) routine, gives a fighter like Kovalev a subconscious reason to lose.
I hope not, but it seems like a built in excuse for a poor performance.
That would give DAZN big fights in 3 consecutive months. I can see them pushing for it, that's a quick turnaround for Kovalev though. Certainly not ideal.
At his age he's not going to get another pay day like that, so he'll probably take the date. If true it's a shame he couldn't of gotten a longer break.
They could do it on the 7th make it a day and night double header with the AJ-Ruiz rematch.
That's a loss for DAZN. Putting to events on the same day when they have a monthly fee.
He fought on the 24th, and let's say he takes off three weeks and returns to camp on September 15, then he would have 7 weeks until his fight against Canelo. Now, you could say they would need to promote it and he would have to start promoting ASAP which could be an issue, but the actual camp time? Think that is enough.
:lol1: I'll say it works since Kovalev's camp says it works. You have good points though. I still think it's a fast turn around for a fighter at this stage of his career who almost just got stopped.
Sure, I guess. Like I said, if they're good with it then there's no issue.

I mean that's why he could rest for three weeks. You don't need another 8 week camp when you are fighting that close to your prior fight.

:dunno:
I was assuming at this stage they'd like some rest between camps. Especially after a tough fight but if they're good to go, they're good to go....

ruiz is still young and in his prime. kovalev is old and past his prime who had a very tough round 8. give me a break. kovalev going into the fight badly prepared so that his handlers all can get a nice big cut of the pie. joke sport. i expected better from buddy mcgirth who had one of his fighters die recently. shameless. spit on them.
Weak argument. He’s already in shape and just has to maintain his fitness. He doesn’t need to jump into sparring until the second half of camp.
Is that not enough time? He didn't suffer any injury that I am aware of and he could rest up for three weeks before getting back in camp. After just fighting, he doesn't need the usual 8 week camp.

That's 68 days from now.....

aka the money is too good to pass up. kovalev going into the fight damaged and bruised. joke fight. and rehydration clause too. they're going to kill kovalev to have their cut of a big payday. shameless. pathetic.
And Canelo will never fight the other 3 champs...

Had one bad round? that is yr argument. He cruised thru the rest of the fight easily and ko’d yarde. plus he will b fightg a much smaller man who’s power will most likely not follow him up to light heavyweight. Damn yre a coward. Everything is in kovalev’s favor. Even the bigger triple flop who hits harder wl not fight kovalev. its literally David vs Goliath.
If Kov wants the payday he’ll take the date. He’s not the one calling any shots.
Lots of fighters have gone from a fight and stay in training. Ruiz being the most recent example.
He knew when he didn’t want to pay Yarde step aside money to fight in September they were looking for a Nov. date. If he really wants the fight as much as he says he does then he should have been prepared to do what it takes.
Why not December?
Simple explanation.
DAZN has finally figured out that in order to keep people from cycling on and off their DAZN subscription whenever they have a big fight, they need to have meaningful fights every month.
From the standpoint of driving subscriptions, heir May/June schedule - GGG, Canelo and Joshua, all within 5 weeks of each other - was stupid. People just dropped off the service after GGG in June, so they learned their lesson.
For September, they don't really have a meaningful fight in terms of driving subscriptions.
For October, they have a so-so fight from the subscription business standpoint: if you know who derevyenchenko is, you're a hardcore boxing fan and are probably already a DAZN subscriber.
For December, they have Ruiz-Joshua 2.
They need something to keep people from dropping DAZN after GGG in October. So they want to force Kovalev to fight in November.
Spoke to Egis Klimas and Buddy McGirt, they both said that the Nov 2nd turnaround for Sergey Kovalev to face Canelo is not an issue... #boxing— Steve Kim (@StevESPNKim) August 27, 2019
Because Canelo makes the rules and Kovalev really has no say and if he wants that retirement paycheque he& his team will agree to whatever date Canelo wants
Obviously picking a date so close is meant to be a bit of a mind f.uck for Kovalev and meant to make Kov uncomfortable and put him at a disadvantage.
Plus there is only around 7 available Saturday’s in Nov/ Dec and DAZn will want a different Pay period for Canelo and AJ , Wilder / Ortiz probably has 1 of those Sat in early Nov and Canelo / DAZn don’t want to go a week or 2 after that fight ,
December locked up with Aj/Ruiz and a week later Fox has a show
Nov 2 might be the only date that makes sense
This right here. There are 9 Saturdays in the two months.
Nov 30th, Dec 21st and Dec 28th are iffy to bad dates due to holidays.
Dec 7th already has AJ/Ruiz but it is also the worst possible Saturday of the year to have a fight in the US. Its the conference championship games that day so you will get next to no free media in the lead up to the fight and no coverage post fight.
That takes us from 9 to 5 and only 1 is in past Nov 23rd. The Dec date or the mid Nov dates very well could be the Ortiz Wilder fight too.
Then throw in T Mobile availability. Dec 14th is already booked with UFC. Nov 9th is booked for the Rodeo finals. The 16th looks to be open. The 2nd is booked with an NHL game. Not sure what venue they are looking to have the fight at.
So really if the fight is going to take place by the end of the year does it really matter all that much 1 or maybe 2 weeks?
