Canelo decisions Sergio. Golovkin stops him. When Sergio was on his way out, he gave his opinion on Golovkin saying his boxing ability was off the charts
The version of Sergio that Margarito beat was very green.
Margarito been in the pro game since 1994, so he was already a 6-year veteran at the time, which is a big advantage in experience against a 2-year rookie who had only been fighting against bums in Argentina.
The Sergio that knocked out Paul Williams 10 years later was a completely different fighter.
He was a slick, sharp southpaw that held his own against any middleweight.
When I said "he" I meant Sergio. Read it on an interview.
Did he really ?
It's kind of a cop out though .
Any Margarito victim can claim that after the fact .
I was aware of it, although I’ve not seen the fight or anything and I wouldn’t have known exactly what year without boxrec, true. Margarito was a really strong competitor at WW (putting whether he was cheating or not aside) so I can’t dock him too many points for that, especially considering that surely wasn’t his best weight, and those weren’t really his prime years, he didn’t really reach his peak until later. When I was referring to him in his prime I meant more around between him beating Kelly Pavlik and him beating JCC jr, so between 2010 and 2012 or so. It was a short prime but a really strong one. I don’t know if that Martínez would definitely beat today’s versions of Canelo or Golovkin but I wouldn’t rule it out either.
Fair enough .
Margarito was a big strong WW and Martinez did have an impressive run later in his career .
IMO there is still No version of Martinez that beats Canelo or Golovkin.
Nah . He probably didn't know Martinez had his first L to Margarito.
Which is why I put " hopeful Boxrecs not needed ).

It’s understandable. It’s HBO nostalgia. No version of Martinez, including “Prime,” beats Canelo from 2013+, let alone against a Prime Canelo. Cotto had the highest Ring IQ from all of Martinez’s opponents.
Martinez was waaaaaay past his prime when he fought cotto, dude could just about walk but he started late and had to make some money before retiring.
cotto lost to trout which is laughable. in 2009, sergio would beat them both.
He thinks margarito had plaster on his fists when he beat him.

he was still finding his feet, it was at 147 and he says he was drained. he could of had a fight with margs at 154 during his championship stage but he said its pointless.
Margarito is Physically bigger than Martinez who you say was " still finding his feet " at 25 years old ?
Then when he had a chance to avenge his first Loss at a more comfortable weight for him he decides it's pointless ?
Like I said . I was a Maravilla fan in his days .
But there's no way he'd beat Canelo or GGG .
Probably still be ducking GGG and getting hometown gifts against guys like Martin Murray
ggg was an absolute nobody back when sergio was prime back in 2010. he was on his down slide when he fought murray, even when he fought chavez junior.
How about when Margarito beat him ( Hopefully no Boxrec needed ) ?

If he was in his prime, sure, he'd be great. But he was old and crippled by injury even when Cotto beat him.

You guys saying Martinez in his Prime would beat Canelo are Hilarious .
I was a big Martinez fan for a bit and even chose him to beat Cotto .
But Martinez lost to Antonio Margarito at the Prime age of 25 .
Regardless if he started his career late the dude lost to Margarito . Who IMO would lose to both GGG and Canelo .
Did you guys picking him to win watch his fights Pre Paul Williams or Cintron ?
People will disagree but I think he has the style to beat Canelo and GGG. He boxes and moves non stop for 12 rds like Ali and SRL did. Canelo would chase him and get popped over and over. Unless Canelo lands a big shot Sergio could beat him.
