Sensor Tower: DAZN bests ESPN with $11.5M in May app store revenue
By Robert Williams
Published June 19, 2019
Brief:
Subscription video service DAZN last month was the top-grossing sports app worldwide with about $11.5 million in user spending, 9.5 times as much as a year earlier, per a Sensor Tower study. Thirty-seven percent of that revenue came from the U.S., followed by 6.5% from Japan.
ESPN's user spending grew 5.6 times to reach $4.7 million, making it the second-highest-grossing sports app worldwide. Seventy-four percent of revenue came from the U.S., followed by Canada at 1.6%. MLB at Bat, NBA and onX Hunt rounded out the top five sports apps by revenue worldwide for the month.
Apple's App Store drove most of the revenue for the top 100 app publishers during Q1, a separate Sensor Tower report found. The top 100 iOS apps made an average of $83.4 million while the Android ones earned $51 million.
Insight:
Sensor Tower's ranking of sports apps indicates that newer brands like DAZN can gain a strong following among mobile users, rivaling more established brands like ESPN and Fox Sports. DAZN's growth is being noticed by advertisers, as Nike is collaborating with the service on traditional ads and custom content in Germany during the FIFA Women's World Cup.
DAZN has previously attempted to tap into sports fans' shifting viewing habits by offer advertisers new opportunities for reaching viewers outside of traditional TV ad buys that can feel repetitive and overwhelming to fans watching live games. The ad-free service last year looked to obtain digital rights to major U.S. sports and introduce new ad models, according to The Wall Street Journal.
I know it was just the app store idiot. I already talked at length before about the $48 million the Canelo fight drew.
Stop lying if you knew it then you wouldn't of left your post saying Canelo only did 11.5M in their best month. And the second part of your original post bringing up ESPN made no sense either. Because from what I can find online ESPN has NEVER generated this much on these app stores for ANY month since they launched. So whatever Dillashaw fight you were talking about didn't generate more then DAZN did in May.
They didn't just make only 11.5M damn another idiot. That is just how much they made from Apple Store and Google Play store. They made over 48M in DAZN subscription revenue alone for the Canelo fight according to ESPN. 11.5M are just ones where people paid through the Apple or Google Play app. This website only tracks app buys and downloads from Apple and Google Play. Anyone who paid on Amazon, 3 party app or DAZN website they can't track. But we know in May they doubled ESPN in subscription who had only 4.7M in May.

So damn happy for DAZN...lets hope more fans start supporting them, so we can get the best fights possible!!! Theyre string of great fights continues tomorrow, n i cant wait!!!
Yeah I've seen reports that ESPN is trying to get the NFL Directiv package once that deal is up. That makes more sense because ESPN is on every service.
word.....
its gonna be interesting.... cbs and fox are the only ones to do nfl games right now..... so espn makes sense....
or cbs can stream the games as part of their cbs all access (imo they should go that route)
That's what they made last month. All those that purchased a yearly sub before last month won't be in the number.
12 million X 12 months is only 144million for the year.
When you’re paying Canelo 35 per fight and Golovkin and Joshua what they’re getting. That’s just not enough
That is 1000% the Drawing Power of Canelo! Props to him and GBP, they're carrying DAZN US right now by themselves.
That is not bad at all and DAZN is better than ESPN+ as far as design and functionality. Also way better BOXING MATCHES on DAZN, Arum put complete SH#T match ups on ESPN+. I don't think ESPN is happy with Top Rank Boxing right now because while they have Top P4P Fighters, they don't have a big draw guy like a Canelo
That being said...The Numbers Don't Add Up compared to how much money they're spending. We do have to be realistic about that. They will get a Jump in Numbers for May and September only because of Canelo but what about the other months? Wait for the Annual Numbers which I'm sure they won't release!
Ok dunny I'm done with it. Once again we'll see who was right and who was wrong.
And about time too. You shill too hard, even your fellow haters tell you to reign it in a bit.
Sure......
See what I mean. You will avoid any honest discussion about DAZN. As soon as a poster brings up the facts about the app, you label them as if that label changes the facts.
Why are you so afraid to have an honest conversation about DAZN? Are you not allowed to as an employee or something?
Lol. You were knee deep in DAZN failing threads before the “problem” threads came about. Remember you were dancing around in such threads before Canelo Jacobs. ;).
Don’t worry though, been saying it from the get go...
“WAR DAZN”
I've never posted I want DAZN to fail. Why are you labeling those threads DAZN fail threads simply because I and others talked about both the positives and negatives of the app?
It is extremely immature of you to want to limit the discussion to just the positives about DAZN. Your unwillingness to have an honest discussion about everything is telling.
Canelo/Jacobs there were serious problems with the app that customers from all over complained about. Its cowardly and petty of you to not want to talk about those realities.
I get you are pro DAZN but if I disagree with a point you make or ask you to prove your point, that doesn't make me anti DAZN.
i think that will go up once they get a chance to do NFL.....
I think thatll be another 2 years or so cuz of a renewed contract I think with Fox.... I dont even think they are gonna redo the nfl sunday ticket on direct tv deal
Yeah I've seen reports that ESPN is trying to get the NFL Directiv package once that deal is up. That makes more sense because ESPN is on every service.
We know you're team Canelo and Team Golden Boy. You agreed when Oscar said this after Arum said HBO would get out of boxing.
What are you talking about Bob? @HBOboxing is the strongest brand in boxing today, pulls in the best ratings bar none. @StephenEspinoza is doing good things at showtime as well. #whowatchesESPN+— Oscar De La Hoya (@OscarDeLaHoya) September 20, 2018
You're so blinded by GGG/GBP loyalty you can't see the forest because of the trees
Are you going to answer my question or not? Stop deflecting and changing the subject. You brought up shyt about offers for free months in this thread and I been asking you the same question over and over and this phuk boy talking about a million things throwing hundred smoke screens to avoid facing 1 simple question LMAO
I'll just keep repeat this until you find your balls and answer the question
dude you can't even answer 1 simple question. I have asked you now directly 4 times in a row. Is it good or bad to give out trials and deals to keep customers subscribing?
https://media.tenor.com/images/d893888c10eb50ccab4a63be533e73cd/tenor.gif
We both know why you won't answer because your answer has changed from you too many times to count. The answer is if Showtime does it it's great. And depending what DAZN is doing at that time it's either bad or STILL bad no matter if they give free trials or don't LMAO. When you man enough to answer my question we can continue other wise take your nonsense and agenda else where

According to Espinoza the free trials were good for Showtime
According to Skipper the free trials weren't good for DAZN
DAZN has said they'll release/talk about the numbers if they are good
I can't find any numbers for the GGG fight....
Now you are lying when did DAZN or Skipper say they will release numbers? Show me that link? Why you keep bringing up Skipper about free trials we talking about you! You said free trails were "bad" when DAZN first did it then YOU said it was "bad" when they stopped doing it. And you flip flopped and made threads about that here long before Skipper spoke a month and half ago. You said back in March not doing free trials is bad. And now you flip flopping again. So I'm asking YOU once and for all are giving free trials and free months to keep people on your subscription good or bad? Because you said one thing when Showtime does it and you can't even keep your own story straight about it on DAZN. And skipper never said free trials are bad they didn't want to give free trails away for a Canelo fight. Canelo isn't fighting during the summer hence them offering some folks who bought the Canelo fight free months if you continue subscribing which isn't unusual for how all these top subscription services act.
Per Sensor Tower
Our revenue estimates are from the App Store and Google Play in the U.S. between May 1, 2018 and May 31, 2019 and represent gross user spending . Apple apps and Google pre-installed apps are excluded. Android estimates do not include third-party stores.
So they track all app downloads and any revenue these apps get from customers. But right now they only track app downloads and revenue from Apple Store and Google Play. According to ESPN Canelo's fight on May 4 alone generated over 48M in new subscription revenue for DAZN. We know at minimum 11.5M came from people who paid directly on Apple Store and Google Play. This doesn't count for anyone who signed up and paid directly on DAZN website, Amazon App store or any other third party app store.
To this point I paid the $99 for the year on the website and have only ever signed in on my Samsung smart TV app.
Every top subscription app has these deals to entice someone who has just signed up to keep trying. Hell I get offers from DirectvNow, Hulu, Amazon Prime you name it. I just bought a new car it came with free SirusXM radio subscription trial. I canceled after the trial and they gave me a deal prorated deal that includes 4 months for free. You know who does this more then anybody? Showtime lol Showtime does this when you sign up for a new cable package they throw in months for free. If you cancel they make all kinds of deals to get you to stay or come back throwing in free months.
If you already paid 20 bucks for 1 month of DAZN and they throw in a few months to get you to stay in hopes that you end up liking and paying for DAZN $99 for the full year that's just smart marketing. All these subscription services are not trying to get 1 payment out of you. They want you to like the service and then keep coming back. DAZN doesn't want you paying 20 bucks a month, they want you paying 8 bucks a month on the $99 yearly plan.

well said.....
This isn't really saying much. In their best month ever with Canelo fighting, they only made $11.5 million?
I bet ESPN made more than that the month Dillashaw fought in just the US

Yea they are losing money. Why they are up for sale and no one will touch it because they have 4.8 Billion dollars contractually obligated still.
This is good for DAZN. Any info on how many US subscriptions DAZN currently has?
Interesting that ESPN has significantly more percentage of their revenues from the USA than DAZN.
i think that will go up once they get a chance to do NFL.....
