Imagine if she looked like Ashanti or Beyonce, she would be one if the biggest stars.
Owell
The more pressing problem for women's boxing, more than lack of hotties, is the severe lack of skills and competition. Someone said it on the Boxnation broadcast, it's important to have women-only sparring because women just move differently, and pick different shots... but the reality is that it has to be mixed sparring often because there just aren't the numbers around.
I've said it before, it's gonna take a helluva long time for women's boxing to develop, and when it does start maturing it might not even look much like men's boxing as we see it now. It's important that the women who want this to happen are doing it for the right reasons (i.e. for themselves, not just to 'prove a point' or whatever) and they should also understand that it might not work out the way they envision. Even if women's boxing did become its own thing, and got deeper talent pools, and got marketed the right way, and everything else, it still might not succeed... I know for myself, I can't see myself ever watching it properly, no matter what
Laila Ali was very popular(due to her dad mostly). She was so popular that they sold a fight between her and Fraizer's daughter when the latter had even less fight experience than Ali. And the fight could have gone either way.
I never liked laila because when the competition came, she retired. Didn't want to fight Wolfe, didn't want to fight Sanders. Sanders' dad used to wear the same sweater for all of her matches because she never lost and he thought it was for good luck and Laila said, "he's gonna have to get a new sweater", but didn't want to make the fight. The girl in my avatar beat Sanders though in a close fight.
thank you for the info but was she on normal hbo/showtime or what? i dont remember ever hearing that she was. was she headliner? did she sell tickets or was her fame just the overall fame like wilder has but then no one watches him lol
Showtime is trying real hard to make her relevant but she's just not polished enough or have enough media savvy to capitalize on it. She's like the female version of Crawford when it comes to playing to the media. Crawford always sound like he's half asleep whenever he does an interview. Her voice sounds weird. There's something going on with her eyes. I think she has an opportunity to get there if she can fix a few thing about her persona.
Women's boxing is garbage, that's why nobody cares. 30 fighters in her division says it all.
Your record can be about 10-7 in women's boxing and you can still be ranked about 3rd in the division.
no, talent in female boxing is concentrated in the lower weight classes. she has no competition and fighters like taylor, braekhus, bopp are better p4p fighters. shields just has more coverage
laila ali was super attractive and even had the ali name and i dont believe she was super popular but then again i didnt follow boxing back then. maybe one of you old fogies can tell me how she sold a million ppvs at 3 cents

ANYONE can be more popular if he/she is atractive, specially in the entertainment business.
Heck, lots of people are celebrities on looks alone. what's the ****ing talent of the Kardashians?
If she was beautiful (which would be weird, for a female hw champion), she'd be getting modeling gigs, more media talking about her, movie deals, and it would certainly boost the popularity of the sport. Remember when a young handsome Oscar was the face of boxing?
she's not beautiful, but she's not ugly either, makeup and a hairstylist could do wonders. The major hurdle with marketing her is that she sounds straight from the hood, black females who sound hood will always have a very difficult time breaking through.
She’s ugly, bruh. She’s quite an athlete but let’s not fool ourselves. I’d pick her over Cris Cyborg I guess but still. Rough around the edges. No offense to her, she’s a fighter and it doesn’t matter but if she were this good and beautiful, i’m sure itd make a difference.
