Im not saying he was not a great fighter he was, but with dying at 23-4 does he get a bit of a pass?Had some real good wins vs Gomez and Lopez, and a pre-prime A Nelson. Was just watching his fight with Nelson again and he was having a lot of probs esp early and knowing that Nelson was great in rematches im not sure he wins if they fought again.
Now Nelson was a ATG but this was a 13fight version who had never fought more then 10rds.Again to be clear not saying he was not a great fighter its just some have him as best Mexican ever(Chavez for me).Dying young like he did its hard to place him and his biggest win was against a smaller(a bit)Gomez.
Would have loved to see him vs a prime Chavez he very well might have been able to handle a raw Julio at start of 130pd reign, but could he handle lets say the Chavez that fought Rosario or even a 130pd more mature version right before he moved up?I think he was ATG but I don't think he beats Nelson in rematch or a prime Chavez who to be fair might have been a tad bigger.
Any thoughts?
No way, hes one of the best and he beat some of the beat guys from 122 to 126. We'll never know how far he could have gone because he died very young. I personally think he could of been better than Chavez Sr.
Hes in my top ten ever and Floyd Sr. also speaks very highly of him, think he also has him top 10.
I started post and I don't think anyone is saying SS was not an ATG but not best Mexican ever as some have placed him.Dont agree with Chavez pick maybe a raw Chavez pre 1986 but not the one who beat Rosario.Might also pick A Nelson to beat him in rematch of their fight that took place less then 3yrs after he turned pro had 13 fights and NONE more then 10 at best.He was giving Sal all he could handle and even winning on some cards and that was with 2 weeks notice. Also think A Arguelo would have beaten him in tough fight that he might have been losing thru 1st 6-8rds or so.All these guys are ATG so no shame IF he did lose all 3 still ATG and HOFer.When guys die young sometimes people overrate them but at level that we are talking about(top 50ish all time) showing you can beat all/most styles comes into it and because of early death he was not able to fully prove that imo.
He did.
He was easily a 2-1 betting favorite.
But, Sal would have handed him his a $$ if he came in 100%.
Sal just had too much chin and resolve for Gomez.
Gomez was a bully and he met his match.
Actually Tony did struggle to make weight and gained some 17 lbs iirc at fight night.
Styles make fights. RJJ's style was just Tony's antidote .
Can't counterpunch someone much faster than you .
Plus RJJ never stayed in the pocket.
Not sure I got your post right but if your saying Gomez took it lightly just because he was a favorite I don't agree but I do agree Sal beats him anyways. As far as J Toney guys still put on tons of weight it was either Mungia or Hurd who came in at 177 fight nite after weighing 154 day before that's 23pds.And still no excuse he had recently gone up from 160 where he was killing himself(Tiberi)and this was his biggest fight. He just looked like what you said a man who could not handle Jones speed.Never a big Toney fan because of wasted talent and his PED issues at 190,Heavy.Credit where credit is due though he was one of the most natural fighters ive ever seen he and Duran could fight so well out of shape because they were so relaxed.I swear Toney could fall asleep in there and thinking about it at heavy he sometimes looked like it except Holy fight that he took serious and was JUICED to the gills.

Hard to believe he would take Sanchez lightly but still no excuse because Sanchez was already well thought of, same with J Toney vs Jones.I don't wanna hear excuse about making weight when both(Gomez,Toney)had just recently moved up and were fighting their biggest bout.Toney did kill himself making 160 but looked just fine at 68 until Jones.I believe it was more Jones then anything and same with Gomez.

He believed in his own media. Took Sal too lightly. He was busy partying and boinking that Puerto Rican starlet .

Don't surprise me Gomez had a lot of trouble making weight even at 126,he claims he was dead at weight for Sanchezbut im not sure I believe that and even if so he had no excuse he was just making 122(well I guess maybe lol).

Sal was not overrated hes as legit as they come as far as greats go, his wins over Gomez, Lopez and Nelson are legendary especially if you know the Bazooka Gomez is(alotta folks have him as the greatest PR fighter ever)and Nelson turned out to be arguably the greatest African fighter ever. So yea Sanchez was pretty special there was also rumors of him moving up to face Alexis Arguello after the Gomez fight now that wudda been one for the ages.
No doubt he was special and a ATG but some ive seen list him 1 or even 2 top Mexicans ever and in that case I think he was overrated. There is a tendency to romanticize fighters/athletes that die or something else cuts their career short before they show whole game and faced all styles.I agree Arguello would have been great fight AA had great style for the come forward more square "typical" Mexican style but Sanchez was more of a boxer/puncher then most.At end of day I would pick Alexis to win a close but clear dec or even a possible late stoppage.Nothing to be ashamed of both ATG and someone would have to lose the only guys I have picked to beat him are top 25-35 or so greatest fighters of all time imo.
I used to get Flash Gordon's bi-monthly journal.
He said WBC used to rig the scale for Gomez.
The fight against Juan Kid Meza as one of those rigged scale fight.
I learned a lot from Flash Gordon back in those days. He pulled no punches.
He exposed Jose Sulaiman's scams.

Ever wonder how Gomez made 122 with a head that had to weigh 120?

He was 2-3 (losing the last three) with an up and coming Henry Armstrong. Armstrong was about two or three years out from challenging for his first title.
Yea maybe that was what I thinking i think it was Agnott that SSR beat at 35 but never stopped.
Yea if I remember right didn't he go distance like 3-4 times with a young SRR Arizmendi?

He is .
I'm not too sure he would have won the rematch against Azumah.
He was great , not taking that away.
Great chin and stamina.
But, Azumah gave him hell on two weeks' notice and a long flight to the US.
I never saw him get rocked and hit like Azumah did .
He had to fight for his life against Juan Escobar in LA. He was knocked down and got a gift draw to many eyes.
Ruben Castillo gave him hell. Many thought Ruben won .
A lot of people pick him over Alexis had they fought at 130.
A lot of people argue he was better than JCC.
Sorry, JCC is the best Mexican boxer ever.
I agree with Nelson and Chavez beating him but I was just thinking about Mexicans bedsides Azumah. Now that you bring up Alexis I would pick him over and rate him above S Sanchez also in a tough fight. He only really had problems with fast feet movers and although Sanchez used more skill then your typical aggressive Mexican fighter of the day I would favor AA.
And finito Lopez?
Regardless of the unfashionable weight class, ten years and remaining unbeaten takes some doing. And stylistically there have been few to compare.
His skills were undeniably his punch delivery was impeccable, but the fact his opponents were pretty weak in comparison and not fighting better fighters wit tough styles you definingly cant put him in top 5 or maybe even 10 imo.I don't hold the staying at one weight against him I think becoming undisputed champ whether you hold all 4 or not is most impressive.I mean who would not consider winner out of Canelo v Jacobs vs GGG the REAL champ?I think holding down a div is much more impressive most of time as jumping up division's cherry picking titles is waaaay overrated. But he never had a tough div and only moved up at end and missed some good fighter's at 108.
Pedroza would have not beat Sanchez imo.
Eusebio had the easier defenses than Sal.
And I'm not too sure he beat Rocky.
Sal wasn't really bothered by dirty tricks.
Gomez was dirty as hell.
It appeared Sal carried him to spank him for a few more rounds. Sal knew Gomez HAD NOTHING to hurt him.

I would pick Sanchez too. I think it would be mighty close. I felt Lockridge May just deserved the fight fight vs. Pedroza (but Pedroza arguably had that 10-8 round in the 14th) and Pedroza just about won the return. A common opponent was Ford who Pedroza fought immediately after. Sal barely edged him out and Pedroza gave him a beating in arguably his best display. Styles make fights though head to head often doesn’t materialize like that.
1. Chavez 2. Olivares 3. Juan Manuel Marquez 4. Sanchez 5. Saldivar 6. Barrera 7. Morales 8. Lopez 9. Canto 10. Zarate
I’d probably have Canelo around 15-20 currently. I honestly feel he should have three more losses and a failed drug test in his 20s he needs to do more for me. Arizmendi is also an excellent fighter that is overlooked historically IMO.
