'I don't want you to call me an African American, I'm an American' - Floyd Mayweather
“ say ‘well, he got all this money, why is he not giving to Africa?’” starts Mayweather. “Well, what has Africa given to us? What has Africa came and gave to my children and to my family? Things work two ways.”
“I never got involved in the sport of boxing to say ‘I’m going to fight and make hundreds of millions of dollars and just give it all away.’ If I’m gonna mess money off in a bad way, I’m going to spend it on myself. I’m going to do what I want to do with my money. You hear people talking about, ‘well, he should…donate to this or donate to that.’ No, I should donate to Floyd Mayweather, donate to Floyd Mayweather’s family. Because that’s what it’s about.”
To summerize, Floyd Mayweather has got to be the #1 P4P selfish successful boxer of all time.
Can't believe why black people still support him just because he is black. He is not doing it for the hood like that idiot gatekeeper Broner do
Ain't this comment from years ago?
You know Floyd has tons of loyal fans (legit fans + hater fans) then anyone in boxing still cuz people bring up his old sh^t so frequently.
Yeah, I think he said this right around the time of the Pacquiao fight. Old news.
Floyd is retired. He had a good run. He's no longer the P4P King of PPV (Cinco De Mayo and Mexico's Independence Day weekends). If he comes out of retirement he risk's losing his legacy to younger, stronger faster fighters and I don't mean the Pac man. TBE maybe the best of his time but not of all time. Not even close!
You aint got a point cuz there is still racism in this time..
My point is this...Floyd is refusing to make himself personally responsible for the plight of the African people...and he is correct to do so. If he acted any other way then he would essentially be saying this is a black person problem...and it's not. It's s global problem. And what you say is true...there is still racism in this time. My point to that is...don't blame a culture for a person. If my neighbour is racist...I don't blame the street. There is a "noose" on a hoodie. Do you think the maker was trying to suggest we go hang some people? And if they say that wasn't the case...do you have the right to call them racist or a liar? Interpretation suits agenda.
Abit lost in general some African American's 'Especially if they agree with Mayweather', I think Floyd Mayweather is just trying to be all controversial like Kanye West. 'He is a African american and he should be proud of it' What has African given to him does not make sense at all, Martin Luther king was from African heritage so, technically Africa gave you and your kids him and the list goes on. 'Money money money, seemed to worship money american's in a very flippant and degrading way'.
Floyd Mayweather was a great fighter and good champion. But Lennox Lewis always stated that Greatness is greatly misunderstood, when somebody asked him 'Who is greater? You or Mike Tyson' But without a shadow of a doubt these type of remarks from Floyd Mayweather is why he will never be as great as Muhammad Ali who was not defined by pay per views or money, or even a unbeaten record. Even in retirement Muhammad Ali was the world's champion.
Look at Mayweather's last name? It is not even his African name. That is the reason why African American's refer to themselves as African American's 'And it is a good thing'.

A real black man I can respect. None of this victim bull****.
I clown on Floyd, but he's right.
I'll bet he's not down with Black Lives matter, BET or Black history month either. He understands these things only divide.
Good on him for not wanting to be called African American. Blacks in Canada are not called African Canadians. Blacks here in Mexico (yes, they do exist in smaller numbers) are NOT called African Mexicans.
They're just called Canadians and Mexicans.
“I just thought about all of our different leaders — Martin Luther King, Malcolm X — that went on the frontline for me and all of my loved ones,” he said. “This stuff still goes on. But I’m strong, smart, patient and come Aug. 26, I’m the same person — strong, smart, patient.
no different, no different. But this is for a cause,” he said. “This is for the American people. This is for all the blacks around the world.
Anyways I can’t hold his statement against him
It’s his fughin business what he does with his money
If he wants to donate then fine if not well its his personal chit
Now we’re gonna dislike someone cause his earned money is not being donated ?
I dislike Floyd for other reasons but this is just ridiculous
Would you want someone telling you what to do with your coin
in short: i will make a lot of money and will not help the poor at all but when it suits me i will bring up racism and unfair treatment about my people. but again, i will not spend a single penny on them.
Do you help the poor? When is the last time you did something? You don't have to have millions. Thousandairs can help, but most never do.
Sick of all this helping the poor bull****. You earn your money, you pay your taxes and call it a day. Give back to your community if you can, sure, but paying your taxes, starting a business, being a good citizen is where it should end.
Paying your taxes allows your government to build infrastructure so others in poverty can have roads, bridges, schools, etc which allows them to start a business and get out of poverty, or find a job which also gets them out of poverty.

I actually respect Floyd for this.
The irony is the Floyd actually donates a lot of time and money. He just doesn't put it out there or the media never rights about it. He puts on a lot of events that help the homeless and children, but it doesn't fit the medias agenda to put that out. I believe that's an old video as well. I find it funny how people ask for him to donate and do all this stuff but won't go out there and ask the same of other people with the same amount of money.
Yeah, that might be true. Today most celebrities won't do anything for charity unless there's 5 cameras there capturing every moment to make them look good.
I know first hand that David Haye does or did a lot of work for a charity and doesn't want any recognition for it and keeps it under the radar.
My mother worked in a childrens hospital and they asked a certain famous singer to go in and visit the kids, they agreed but then cancelled when they were asked not to bring their camera crew with them...
I'm not seeing anything new here. He's always been selfished and self-absorbed.
I've never liked Floyd the person, but he's a fantastic boxer.
I hate everything about this dude. His arrogance, his Napoleon complex, his attention seeking ways... Still the best boxer I've ever seen and the reason I started studying boxing.
Why u guys care so much about floyd??? this guy was a good boxer but nothing more, he is arrogant, selfish and thinks he is a god, this dude got NOTHING FROM ME not even a penny, I DON'T LIKE HIS PERSONA to fcking c0cky
He can do whatever he wants with his money. He doesn't owe it to anybody. He didn't make it illegally and nobody was forced to buy any of his fights.
People think just because your rich, you SHOULD donate vast amounts to charity. Of course it's great if people do, but you can't vilify people if they chose not to. I bet 90% of the people vilifying him don't donate anything either.

Floyd lives in his own galaxy. People like him who've been rich and famous for such long periods of their lives (more than half his life at this point) have very little grasp on everyday reality the way others do. Whether people support him or not at this point doesn't really matter to him because that's not something he genuinely values. So long as he's surrounded by the people he "trusts" and they don't change their tone on him he'll think everything is cool. Its not a unique problem to Floyd, it's a very common issue with celebrity.
