That's my opinion and I know I'm going to catch some criticism for it, but no way Golovkin/Canelo deserves to be Fight Of The Year.
A real Fight Of The Year shows better qualities of both fighters, and Canelo/Golovkin did nothing but exposed the weak points of both fighters. Canelo at the peak of his prime showing worse stamina than an old fighter and Golovkin throwing nothing but jabs, only headhunting, making no adjustments at all. I was disappointed with both of them.
The fight was entertaining but it's not supposed to be a fight of the year. Lomachenko/Linares, Ortiz/Wilder, Usyk/Briedis were better, these fighters showed their best qualities, their top game and their weak points weren't exposed in the same way like Canelo and Golovkin weak points were exposed
It can't be a fight of the year only because they're more well known
Canelo/GGG 1 & 2 were not very good fights. First fight was full of controversy with the scoring, and the fight itself didn't deliver. Canelo was on his backfoot most of the fight, and GGG never really showed any balls to KO canelo and force any stoppage when he had him on the ropes. Oscar and abel were bashing mayweather/conor fight being the circus, but the canelo/ggg 1 was the true circus.
As for the 2nd fight, it was another disappointment. Canelo this time forced the action, but GGG was even more cautious and did not start fast as usual. GGG just couldn't fight aggressive despite his team saying that they don't want to leave it to the judges. It was another bore fest.
My fight of the year candidate would be wilder/ortiz. It was intense and had some nice moments. This was the first time I was concerned about wilder when he looked like he was going to get stopped, but he showed heart and KO'ed ortiz.
That's my opinion and I know I'm going to catch some criticism for it, but no way Golovkin/Canelo deserves to be Fight Of The Year.

I disagree with Canelo, this fight showed new dimensions to his game, he showed he can be a pressure fighter, instead of the counterpuncher / boxer puncher he usually is...and his stamina wasn't that bad considering he was the one pressing the action for most of the night
the real dissapointment was GGG, with his jab fest, backpeddling and absence of body punching, he made adjustments and was getting better in the later rounds, but I expected more from him, much more
and yeah, good fight but not exciting enough to be FOTY
Are people calling it fight of the year?? It really wasn't that good.
I'm like 95% sure media will call it a fight of the year, just watch
The fight was entertaining, but not for me. Not my style, not my kind of fight
The media picks the fight of the year and the rematch probably won't get it since they heavily went with Golovkin as the real winner. Too embarassing and another fiasco for boxing.
At least you said it was just your opinion. My opinion is it will very likely be fight of the year because it was a hard fought war and both excellent fighters fought their hearts out. I don't agree they showed all this weakness. Canelo had less stamina than the older GGG only because GGG has great stamina for a boxer of any age and always throws more punches than his younger opponents. Canelo threw almost 700 good punches. He threw more punches than your fight of the year fighters Ortiz and Wilder threw combined in their fight. That's not poor stamina. Wilder and Ortiz showed poor stamina. GGG threw lots of punches besides jabs and his jab is a powerful punch. GGG did adjust to finish strong. You seem to think a boxer getting knocked down is a must for fight of the year. GGG and Canelo don't get knocked down. That's a weakness they DON'T have. They can take the hardest punches and come back with bombs of their own making their fight my fight of the year.
Incorrect comparison considering heavyweights are less dynamic. I'd prefer to see knockdowns, because if the fight supposed to be the best of this year, then the winner should be clear for me. That's how I see it. GGG completely ignoring the body was the biggest disappointment, before the fight I've even posted a message here that he has to target the body to win this fight, but by the 3rd round I knew he's going to lose seeing all that headhunting. As for Canelo, Golovkin stamina is great, but it can't be an excuse for Saul, even Jacobs was fresher throughout his fight with Golovkin, plus all that tainted meat controversy wasn't a good look either. You want to see a fight where both guys go beyond their limits to win, rewatch Linares/Loma and Usyk/Briedis but this fight only created more room for criticising both fighters
Canelo GGG was a great fight between two of the best in the world. It had a lot of drama and strategy and enough fire works to make it a great ride. Not a fight of the year type slugfest, but as far as big fights go it was aboit as good as it gets.

Heavyweights can't throw as many punches in general. Canelo's a great fighter but his stamina is terrible for somebody who trains every day and is as young as he is.

Yeah, Lara/Hurd is worthy of mentioning too. I don't say I didn't like Canelo/Golovkin, I only say The Fight Of The Year supposed to show the better qualities of both fighters and Canelo/Golovkin wasn't that
Oh, I know. Just having my morning coffee and felt like hijacking your thread :lol1::lol1:
I like all four fights you listed. I'll throw Lara/Hurd onto your list too.
