How many champions have moved down in weight to win a world title?
Having a hard time finding info. I think it's like 3 or 5 at most. Any clues people?
Anthony Mundine was the WBA champ at 168
and somehow dropped and won the interim title at 154
And made tens of millions of dollars in the process. Amazing what the big fish in the small pond can achieve. Even though he's a grub.
The difficulty of returning to a lower weight is highly overrated. Mosley went from 147 to 154 and back again any time he pleased with no problem at all. He won a world title at 147 from Margarito after having been a champion at 154. Cotto won a tittle at 154 after having been a champion at 160. Mayweather won titles at 154 and then returned to 147. I am sure there have been many others who went down in weight and won world titles. It's only difficult if the boxer is naturally too big to make the weight. Lots of boxers gain a lot of weight when the don't have a fight coming up and then take all that weight off and perform well when they do have a fight. Bradley used to get fat between fights but always came to his fights in shape. It's just a matter of losing the weight slowly with a good diet and exercise.
I think it was harder during the days of fight day weigh-in.
Harder to win titles back then too.
Carlos Ortiz winning the jr welter belt and going down to lightwt. might have been the only time a jr welter did that .
Outside of Hank Armstrong winning welter then light, I don't really remember anyone else doing it before IBF came about .

Ward 178 pound Olympian to 168
Pro titles.
Ray Leonard. Beat Kalule for his WBA jr middle belt.
Relinguished it and beat Tommy Heanrs for his WBA welter belt.
Henry Armstrong. Won welter title . Went down to 135 and won the title there.
Nonito Donaire. Won WBA feather belt and lost it. Won jr feather belt for WBO.
Never mind Ray Leonard winning a fake lt heavy belt without fighting there.
Pancho, going by memory.
And with that, where's the ignore button?

After winning a world title at 175, Hearns later won a world title at 168.
After winning a world title at 154, Leonard later won a world title at 147.
After winning a world title at heavyweight, Jones later won world titles at 175.
I'm sure there are countless other examples, this is just off the top of my head.
I'd be curious as well. It's usually a really bad idea, since most boxers that fight at a certain weight class are extremely lean and in shape at said weight, and going below that implies they'd have to lose muscle mass...
Now of course, if you're a fat ass why not? :lol1:
