Dave Coldwell wonders why Wilder isn't more popular in the United States

if you go back and look at the 80's, 90's, and 2000's, you will see that Football, Basketball, and Baseball were still more popular than Boxing, yet boxers like Holyfield, Oscar, Tyson, Tito, Cotto, Floyd, Roy Jones, and Manny Pacquiao still became huge superstars despite boxing being a "less popular sport" A lot has changed since then. HBO's postion as the PPV leader in combat sports was stolen by UFC.

You often here American fight fans saying that the reason why boxing isn't as popular in the states compared to the UK, is because the United States has more major sports. So, in an age of social media, what's the excuse for guys like Thurman, Crawford, The Charlos, Spence, Wilder, Porter, Jacobs, and other talented American fighters? Is their promoter, do they lack charisma, is it because they don't have the complexion for perfection, or is it because they haven't used social media to their advantage? No offense but who is Dave Coldwell?

This is his first test, it's nobody's fault but his own and his manager that he hasn't accomplished more.

I reckon if AJ fought at the Barclays tonight it would have been sold out a lot earlier.

He has no promoter and when DiBella has promoted him, he's done an awful job. Wilder needs some PR management, media training and a promoter like Hearn. If Hearn was his promoter, don't you think Wilder would be one of the biggest stars in boxing? He'd be in the same league as Canelo and AJ if he was promoted properly.

It’s pretty obvious. It has to do with the way they each present themselves. Joshua is a likable guy, can complete a sentence and acts like a professional. Wilder on the other hand.......

Hopefully tonight's fight against Ortiz will start addressing that problem. Maybe, but I doubt it. Wilders only chance is if he fights AJ and if he wins...but the chances are slim and none, and slim left town a long time ago.

Look, all theories and rubbish aside, the fact remains, Wilder has not fought ANYONE to be excited over.Hopefully tonight's fight against Ortiz will start addressing that problem.

Jack Dempsey was the most famous athlete in the world above Babe Ruth & Ty Cobb. The days of Tyson drawing huge interests are gone. Ray absolutely. there was a time when the heavyweight champ was the most famous man in the world.

Wilder vs Stiverne II was awesome, eye opening, something to get excited over. That punch through the Stiverne's guard was and shrugging off the ref for more... Whereas Joshua vs Takam was, raised questions about big guy's stamina. Good points

Floyd and Manny were superstars in their late 20's. Holyfield, Tyson, Hearns, Sugar Ray, and Roy Jones were also superstars in their 20's. Crawford, Thurman, and Spence are all entering into their primes yet none of them are true superstars. The only true superstars we have are Canelo and Joshua. All those guys became superstars in their 20's. You have guys who are in their primes who haven't even headlined a PPV and if they do, the PPV flops. The PPV era of the 90’s and 00’s was built and stable, now trending down. PPV is what you make it. Hard to sell PPV in this day and age; compared to the past.
