By Sean Jones: Errol Spence Jr. says he would move up to 160 to face Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in his next fight if the match is offered to him after his title defense this Saturday night against Lamont Peterson.
Spence points out that Canelo (49-1-2, 34 KOs) is not that big of a fighter, so he doesn’t see the size being a problem for him to move up to middleweight to face him. Canelo is listed at 5’9”, but he’s probably no more than 5’8”. He’s very short for the middleweight division.
Canelo is expected to face IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs) in a rematch on May 5. If Canelo wins that fight, Spence says he’d like to fight him. Indeed, Spence thinks Canelo WILL win against Triple G in their second fight, as long as he doesn’t tank in the last half of the fight like he did in their super-fight on September 16 last year. Spence is predicting a win for Canelo over GGG. Spence is basing his predicting on Canelo NOT fading in the last 6 rounds against Golovkin.
“I could do that,” said Spence to IFL TV, when asked if he would be willing to move up to middleweight to take on Canelo Alvarez. ”Canelo’s not a big guy. He’s probably about your size. He’s not that big,” said Spence.
Well, it would be up to Canelo and his promoters at Golden Boy if they’d be interested in making a fight against the 27-year-old Spence. The weight difference wouldn’t be an issue, as Spence rehydrates to the low 170s for his fights at welterweight. Spence is basically a junior middleweight that melts down to fight at 147 against welterweights.
I'd love to see this fight, instead of this joke on Saturday.
Spence is no joke. He's actually BIG for the welter division. He won't look any smaller than Canelo. When was the last time or EVER that Canelo has fought someone with all the things that Spence brings to the table (talent, boxing skills, hunger, southpaw stanza, powerful combination punching, undefeated)?
If Canelo beat Spence, it'd be his BEST win to date. Who else on Canelo's win record is better than Spence?
I'm gonna go with Spence if it happens.
I want Spence to fight GGG too. Whichever comes first. Doesn't look like it'd happen this year. More time for Spence.
He better work his ass off till then, tho.

Shrug, I can't blame him. It would be by far the biggest payday of his career, and his other options suck horribly.
He's wrong though. Canelo's huge, especially compared to Spence. That will look like Golovkin-Brook.
Imagine if Canelo hits Spence with the punch that knocked Khan out, it may not knock him out cold, but it will be damn well gonna wobble him to eternity.
I agree. Canelo would put Spence on queer street with that punch.
Brook was bigger and stronger than Spence dummy.
Spence didn't use size to dominate Brook, he used his ridiculous stamina and punch output and a consistent body attack.
He also used a very stiff jab consistently, which eventually broke Brook's eye socket.
I didn't say he was bigger than Brook but he wasn't smaller. He was big enough to walk through Brook so saying he used his size isn't wrong "dummy". Now sit down and shut your ass up! Spence does have out of this world conditioning but he trains like a mad man and thats why he's on top. He's still very hungry.
I don't think Spence got lucky with Brook, but Canelo is wayyyy too much for him right now lol.
Canelo can fight and he boxes well and is a smart counter-puncher. He hurts Spence and wins a decisive decision. Spence is busier than Canelo, but Canelo won't be running away the way WW's do. He'll gladly trade and we'd see a new side of Spence...one that isn't used to being the bigger/stronger guy.
Canelo UD.
Well going to the UK for the Brook title shot was a big risk. But yeah it wasn't luck I expected Spence to win but I didn't expect a stoppage. I thought he'd be dominant in the late rounds but I didn't think he'd break the other side of Brooks face and make him get on his knees and beg for it to be over. But yeah he won't be breaking Canelo's face. Spence can't outbox Canelo at this stage and he ain't knocking him out.
I'm one of the guys on here calling for Spence to leave the welter division and find challenges elsewhere. This is it, if he can get this Canelo fight.
I've seen Spence say that he gets up to 170 in between fights and that he's a big welter. I think it was before the Brook fight. I agree that he's a big boy. Don't wait for Thurman or anybody else. Make a name for yourself. Call out all the name fighters closer to your division.
I'd love to see this fight. Please make this fight happen.
They are two of my favorite boxers but Canelo is just too big for Spence. Pound for pound they are equally good but Canelo is 13 pounds bigger so he knocks Spence out in my opinion. Spence is a great body puncher but so is Canelo.
What the he ll happened to some of the smart guys on here RJJGOAT,lOPEZBOXING,STUDENT OF THE GAME,McNULTY(I think I did see him)and the others who's names excape me at moment. This place is filled with fanboys/trolls
Canelo fought Amir Khan at 155, who is a fighter not known for an iron chin. lol. If Canelo and GB were willing to match him with Khan, I don't see why they wouldn't with Spence. If anything, stylistically, Spence is more suited for Canelo than Khan. Khan's lateral movement and hand speed gave Canelo some problems in the first few rounds. Spence style is a straight attack to the body which gives Canelo plenty of counter opportunities.
No Khan is nothing like Spence Khan would have to fought Canelo with a chin guard.Spence could win.Trust me on this its NEVER gonna happen.
It will be a cold day in he ll before GB makes that fight. Its really a lose-lose deal for him.If he losses then he just got beat by a welter and if he wins he just beat a welter who people will say was never that good to begin with.

Wouldn't be suprised if an offer was made by Oscar. Spence might kiss the ww division good bye if he jumps up to 160 though. He's got time. He should wait. Get the Thurman and Crawford fights first. He's not ready for a bigger and more experienced Canelo. Canelo knocks Thurman out. Its a huge jump too soon. He got lucky rolling the dice with Brook but he was getting schooled the first half of that fight as I predicted. Then he came back in the second half as I expected. But this would be too much IMO. They have weight classes for a reason as they say and he wouldn't be able to use his size to wear Canelo down in the 2nd half like he did with Brook. He wouldn't be able to walk through Canelo.

Rehydrates to the 170s? Stop making up bull shieet! Spence is in the IBF that has had a 157lbs rehydration limit for years now. It aint possible for him to have rehydrated to the 170s. You guys are full of shieeet!
Records say Canelo is 5'9 and then you argue against records and claim that he is actually 5'8 because what...you wish him to be 5'8?
This is the most unprofessional shieet I ever read. Fanboyism! SMH!
