Spence is a top p4p fighter he has now proven his worth but people are starting to over hype his skills. His main weakness is his lack of defence he is very hittable and shown he lacks the fast reflexes and speed to be next Floyd like many claim, he also has shown he is vulnerable to a great jab and and a good uppercut. He def has some of the best offence in the game and proved he can box. But offence can only take you so far until you meet a guy with the skill set reflexes and toughness to get the job done. You need to be a well rounded all around fighter to be the next 1 p4p king.
When Spence become P4P #1 (and he will) a lot of folks in this thread are going to feel pretty silly.
And while his trainer insists his defense is better than what we have seen, it needs to be said that Kell Brook landed better against Golovkin and Porter than he did vs Spence.
His defense is not the liability some think, especially if we have yet to see his best.
Spence is actually underrated.
spence blocks a lot of punches with his gloves. i guess, if he does not make people miss like floyd did, he has bad defense? :dunno:
i'm trying to figure out what ww has this great defense, that makes spence's a liability for him...
Doesn't matter, Spence has Brook, who is better than everyone on Crawford's and Mikey's resume
correct
Mikey? No he does not but Crawford yes. But what Spence did is but a fraction to what Crawford have done. That's why he is a top 1-3 P4P.

A "Good Win" and a "Good fight" doesn't make you a p4p fighter. It is consistency of wins and accomplishments, which Spence is not yet doing.
He has a better win on his resume than Crawford and Mikey who you rank highly
If you think, Crawford is top p4p then you should have Spence there as well sine Spence has a better name on his resume. Now, I don't think Spence is overrated but I do not think that he will run through guys like Thurman and Porter. With Crawford I think he will have a much better chance due to the size disparity. Spence is a straight line fighter and fighters like that can be outboxed If anyone is overrated it is Crawford.
Is Spence overrated. Depends who you ask I guess. I think he's a very good fighter with some flaws. Defence could be better but he's got the job done so far. So no I don't think he's overrated by most people.

You are very accurate I have the same thoughts he won't be the next Mayweather the next Mayweatheris Lomachenko
Lets not forget he went into Brooks backyard and stopped him by smashing his orbital. Spence absolutely needed a ko to in over there and he got the job done. Very rare quality.
He has a win over Brook, which is a great win but there's always going to be that cloud over it with Brook coming off a beating, eye surgery and weight loss. He struggled to make 147 even when he was fighting there, never mind coming back down from 160.
That said, in the first 6-7 rounds of that fight you could see Brook was still quality and it was close. Brook would have dealt with any WW outside the top 5 or so that night, but couldn't do that with Spence. I'm not sure how the fight would have unfolded if Brook hadn't had all those issues but i saw enough to know Spence is somewhere around the top of the division.
Any win over Brook is a very good win. All the talk of quitting aside, Brook is no joke as a fighter. His biggest mistake was fighting GGG.
Nah, Spence is the real deal. That Brook win was one of the best wins in 2017, of course people are rewriting history with the 'he was drained and shot' rubbish, but these are the guys who picked Brook to win. He beat the #2 or #3 WW at the time, in his prime, in his backyard. That is no joke. Kell is one of our most talented fighters.
Sometimes you watch a fighter and you just know you are seeing someone with potential. That's what I see in Spence. A strong WW with good power, decent boxing skill, and the willingness to fight anyone. While he may not be as polished as Crawford, Mikey or Loma in terms of boxing skills, he makes up for it with heart, willingness and just enough combination of power and skill to get the job done. I'm not sure what questions will be answered versus Peterson, but he's looking better with each fight. I think 2018 should answer our questions providing Haymon can get him a decent fight. Spence vs. Porter should be an easy one to make.
Yeah, think his size advantage is his ace in the hole. He'd probably look ordinary at 154 and I see Thurman and Crawford giving him major problems at 147.
size advantage over kell brook moving down from middleweight? the same kellbrook that handled shawn porter inside without much fuss?
I think Spence is the best welterweight including the excellent Crawford. He is a wicked body puncher and attacks very hard so he gets hit more than a defensive boxer. His chin seems solid. He is very high up in my top 10 best pfp list. He should easily beat and KO a good solid contender like Peterson. If he has a hard time beating Peterson then I have him overrated. I think he deserves the hype unless and until some boxer shows he doesn't.
As long as he stays at 147 he will be fine. He lacks the nuances and boxing ability to be great against bigger guys at the moment, but he may develop that overtime. For an Olympian, I was very disappointed with how uncomfortable he looked fighting backwards whenever Kell Brook summoned the will to come forward.

when you are an offensive fighter, as future hendrixx mentioned, you are going to take some.....if spence fought like floyd the last quarter of his career then he could probably show you some different things and a different style.....youve got to take a lil to get off when you are an aggressive offensive guy
nobody has ever called him the next floyd.
and no, you do not need to be well rounded to be p4p king. pacquiao only had one gear and always had crappy defense himself. but managed to get fighter of the decade.
spence is still developing and if he isn't as good as the hype says he is why isn't anybody in a rush to fight him?
i said the same about ggg for years. if he's truly all hype why are all these champions avoiding him. ggg also has a leaky defense.
spence is a high volume puncher that stalks you and breaks u down with body shots. anybody with that style is gonna take some hits but he keeps coming. nobody has ever forced spence to fight differently.
good post......
most fighters are vulnerable to a good uppercut...
i dunno if anyone claimed he was the next floyd just on skills and the ability to mimmick floyds style....spences style if much different....i just think some think he can be a star.....but i dunno if he can ever turn the villain card over...although he might have a bit of it in him....hes a pretty humble guy....hes been getting some push too....he was on the sidelines for the cowboys thanksgiving day game and the broadcast showed him and mentioned him....
nobody has ever called him the next floyd.
