I found the Larry Merchant thread very interesting. Which leads me to start this thread.
Here is one of my favorites Boxing commentators Howell Cosell I think he was pure entertainment.

Al Bernstein up until a few years ago when he became a suit. Young Max Kellerman before he turned into a shill suit.
Current, Paulie Malignaggi. I don't think he'll ever be a suit cuz he's a Boxer.
The British broadcasters I listened to lately aren't very good. Don Sheridan I enjoy. Cosell was great. Al Bernstein is another I enjoy listening to. Don't really have a favorite but those guys are good.
Don Dunphy for sure. Guy was Howard Cosell before Howard Cosell. And a more respectable a guy who didn't try to be the show like Howard & a lot of these guys try to be 24/7/365.
Also lol at Mechant on anyone's list. Some of you guys are suckers for a mfer who can quote a book & knows more than SRR's real name as far as boxing stories/facts/random sh^t goes.
Right now I think Al Bernstein is the quessential boxing commentator.
yea don d was a legend his voice and jimmy lennon sr voice just really makes you think boxing
I hated Cosell because he didn't really know much about boxing. Merchant does know boxing. I want the fight to entertain me, not the commentator. I would prefer the commentator said as little as possible or better yet nothing at all and let me enjoy the fight without distractions. I was a boxer in the army and have been a boxing fan since I was 16 years old. I don't need anyone to tell me what I am watching. It's not radio. When Lampley started he knew nothing about boxing and talked way to much. He would insist on telling you about every punch as if you couldn't see what punches were thrown and landed for yourself. He has learned boxing on the job and is better now. Kellerman has always been a boxing lover and he is pretty good I think. I hate Atlas. He talks every second of the round and talks in a language only he understands. He dominates and ruins the fight.
say what you want about Jin Lampley but his passion for the sport can be heard in his commentary easy.
My all time favorite tean is Lampley, Merchant, and Emmanuel Steward
"I think there was another great named Tom Dumphy. Hey Ray Corso...correct me if i'm wrong".........
Your close, Don Dumphy was the best by far!
As for ring announcers the great New York ring man Johnny Addie was the best I ever heard.
He would announce the corner color, the trunks color, city & state & country, give the weight and a comment about credits (champ ex champ contender etc. the name and ad in the nick name too.
The circus announcer today is a bore to me, he makes the event sound like a side show instead of a series event!
Howard Cosell knew NOTHING about boxing absolutely NOTHING! Merchant hated movers who didn't work off their moves and he demanded action! Lampley is an amateur and Max is Max basically a side kick.
Today I actually like Paulie when he stays calm and tries to expound on techniques because he knows his basics and more!
Ray
Soul,
I've been very impressed with the British commentating, they stick to more of what's going on & are least biased
I think the golden age of British commentary across all sports is long gone. I'm only 27 but I still remember the likes of Watt, Rawling, Darke and co doing a great job and largely unbiased, or as unbiased as human being can be.
But with Adam Smith employing boxers he enjoyed into commentary positions we have horrendous work by guys like Froch, Macklin, Barker...the golden age is dead.
Larry Merchant is the best color commentator (boxing analyst or whatever his title was) of all-time.
The thread is the best not the worst.....matter of fact jim lampely is worse.
Cosell and is not even close IMO!
The best right now is some of the UK broadcasters who aren't bias like most and Roy Jones due to him calling it how it is and seeing things that most armchair commentators cant cuz he's a fighter!
Gutteridge from England and the ITV broadcasts would've been nothing without him. Did a lot of Olympic broadcasts too. Famously interviewed Ali mid fight lol Absolute legend.

I personally like commentators that stick more to blow by blow commentating. I don't like when they over-analyze, because sometimes as they are over-analyzing the other guy tends to be landing some good shots & there still talking about how good the other guy is ....
Gutteridge? i'm not sure if it's him, but I think there was another great named Tom Dumphy. Hey Ray Corso...correct me if i'm wrong.
