After coming off back to back losses (controversial or not) kovalev doesn't have as much pull as he once did. His krusher persona has taken a huge hit,and it wouldn't suprise me if hbo doesn't have as much interest in him now. This is where Stevenson comes into the picture. The fight can still be billed as two monster punchers going at it,and if kovalev wins,he can get the 3rd fight with ward because it would be a title unification. This is all coming from a kovalev fan,and I'll admit that kovalev has to swallow a bitter pill and give into Stevenson's demands because kovas bargaining power is all but gone at this point. It's either look for a fight with Stevenson,or risk going up against these rising Eastern euro monsters that are starting to make waves in the division.
Do we definitely know that?
I mean I think its highly likely, but he's 34 & lost two fights & to some people he more or less gave up in that 2nd fight.
I wouldn't bet on HBO dropping him, but there is more of a chance that he gets cut loose or let him fight outside of his HBO contract with his current status + depending on whats Ward's move is now & relationship will be with HBO.
Duva said Kovalev will definitely fight later this year because they have one more fight on contract with HBO. If Duva hated dealing with Ward's team, she will hate having to deal with Stevenson's team.
Agreed, would be a good move for Kovalev if he can get it. He's 34, so time is definitely running out. Stevenson is nowhere near Ward's league as a fighter, but he's definitely dangerous, and the fight would be almost a guaranteed KO one way or the other.
It would be a great fight. Stevenson would rather fight Ward but I think Kovalev vs Stevenson would sell well. Stevenson doesn't do all that grabbing and wrestling. He just throws bombs like Kovalev. A KO ending one way or the other is almost certain.
He should fight the winner of Barrera-Smith.
I like that too and he should try to become Stevenson's mandatory but his next fight will definitely be on HBO so we can rule out Stevenson being his next fight.
Kov is 34 & gots back to back L's. I think its a solid bet to make we see him in a compelling fight next time out. Whether its Stevenson or Beterbiev or The Nail or someone else in the legit top 5 or top 10 idk, but I won't be surprised if he fights the best available option.
Honestly it doesn't seem like a great idea to turn him around in 5 months as is the plan apparently, & specifically vs the best available guy as I suspect will go down, with how broken he looked at the end of this last fight, but I think thats what we are likely to see.
He should fight the winner of Barrera-Smith.
That's the point boss. Kovalev needs to get the Stevenson fight before ward snatches it up. If ward gets the Stevenson fight and beats him, kovalev gets left out in the cold.
My point is why would Stevenson even want to fight him now. What does Stevenson get out of it?
Why would Stevenson want to even fight him now? Ward is who Stevenson should be fighting.
