He was giving his opponent too severe a beaten. Boxing is a savage sport where sometimes the guy on the other side of the ring will not walk out the same way he walked in
But was there ever a time a fighter decided to call it a night because the ref or the corner of his opponent wouldn't stop the fight to save the fighters life.
Bonus Question: How would you as a fan feel about something like this?
Pacquiao wasn't sympathetic to Margarito he was getting tired and already knew he won the fight. Margarito was also tagging him to the body. He knew it was unnecessary punishment for both of them.
If a boxer quits for not wanting to hurt an opponent he probably shouldn't be fighting.
Yep, I could tell in that first fight he took a second to think about whether he wanted to go down or not...thankfully for his opponent Sutherland took a dive. I've never seen that type of humility in all my years of watching boxing...
He's a humanitarian. Like he said, it's just a sport. It's not worth taking a man's life even though he can snatch the beating heart right out of an opponent's chest at any moment of his choosing. But for what? To get a W on your official record?
In both of Brian Sutherland's professional fights he faked getting KO'd because he knew that he might kill his opponent.

I have never heard of that happening. I have heard of boxers asking the ref to stop the fight to save their obviously beaten opponent from further damage. If the ref wouldn't stop the fight they kept punching the guy. I would have no problem with a kind boxer who left the ring rather than continue punching a badly beaten opponent.
I think when Kovalev fought Roman Simakov on that fateful night , he didn't go for the head as much as he would have. Even Sergei had the heart to lay off a bit and go for the body instead. I think he was left with no choice with the ref not stopping the fight and Simakov trying to punish him on the other hand.
Tough fight to rewatch. Dangers of the sport.
Bellew was talking to Shane McGuigan as he had Haye against the ropes for half a round telling him to throw the towel in, the next round thats what he did. This is maybe different due to Hayes visible injury during the fight though
floyd did this all the time when he refused to fight guys he was really saving their lives because he didnt want to beat them to death. you may call it ducking but he calls it saving
Interesting concept, to think Floyd was just looking out for one of his fellow boxers when decided not to fight Margarito.
But what if the judges do something stupid? If a KO is there, ya gotta get it. Its not always there, but if its there, its there.
It's in the hands of the fighter at the moment I suppose. But you do take a major risk if you decide your opponent is done for them.
And like you said, you might find yourself getting robbed by the judges.

that fighter should go to the body if he is worried about inflicting brain damage on his opponent
I've only seen that twice one was the Eubanks jr vs Blackwell fight. The other was the Augustus vs Oliveria fight. In the Augustus fight he saw Oliveria grab at his neck in pain and body shot him the rest of the fight.
Not really quit but we saw Pacquiao's reaction when he was banging on Margarito.
I also believe Lara let Trout off the hook (see what I did there?). Lara takes the family stuff real serious (if you follow him you would know) and I think he saw Trout's kids' reactions.
I can see how knowing the opponents kids are in the crowd would deter you from finishing off a fighter in a fight your winning by a landslide.

How messed up would it be that in an act of compassion a fighter leaves himself open while going to the body, gets countered and loses the fight by KO?
