Is Canelo popular in Mexico?

He lost a lot of respect when he vacated the title instead of fighting GGG. Him being more popular among Mex-Americans is unknown to me.

Just go to ESPN Latino or check out the dozens of Canelo Chavez shows they put up every day in spanish, all the top comments are people criticizing Canelo for ducking GGG and hoping Chavez knocks the arrogant Diva out. I travel a lot and like most boxers, Canelo is a virtual nobody outside Mexico and the US with his fights barely creating a ripple of interest anywhere else Manny is still massive and even Joshua has overtaken him after just 19 fights in terms of being "famous" IMO Good to know as well. I figured Joshua would be pretty big in Europe by now. Canelo being famous in the US and Mexico is a big deal. This is a good chunk of the boxing world. I would be willing to bet he's pretty well known in South America, too.

Canelo drew 18m viewers on Mexican TV just to see him fight a unknown smith, a guy who none of his fights were shown on Mexican or US TV. So yeah saying he is popular in Mexico appears to be an understatement despite the so called testimonials from Canelo haters on this website. Men lie but numbers dont. For comparison GGG vs Brook aired on the same network and drew just 1.5m viewers.

From what I see Canelo is more popular with Mexican Americans Ive never said he isnt popular, casuals like him and theyre the majority, anyone who actually pays attention to the sport knows he's a duck. Boxing Gym people hate him. In fact i've said numerous times that it was the word of mouth from Mexico that made him popular in the states and thats why he was an easy no brainer investment for the promoters up there. So basically HBO/SHO and GBP just collected the rewards on the work done by Televisa here. Mexican Americans are mostly casual nationalistic fans so they still eat up the hype, plus the SHO call of the Mayweather fight was very generous to Canelo....his credibility took a hit with the casuals in Mexico because he lost 12-0 to Floyd...then the masses who only watch free TV here think Cotto beat him because the call for that fight was biased against Canelo. His name recognition is something that has been worked on for 8 years by the TV industry here, and he is still super popular so as far as views go, he's a massive attraction

I don't know about Mexico, but here in Puerto Rico, we love him. Canelo is the face of boxing in the island. That's interesting to know. Wouldn't have guessed it. I think that, to a good portion of the world, Canelo is probably the face of boxing right now. That's a good thing, if you ask me. The kid seems pretty okay so far. I would imagine Pacquaio still reigns supreme in the Far East. On another note, I never quite understood why it's so common for people of a particular descent to be rejected by those living in the motherland. I guess people just continue the tradition they were taught by their forebears, a kind of bigotry.

He gets high viewership there. Canelo-Smith was watched by over 18 million homes in Mexico. Canelo-Lopez also had over 18 million homes watching. Mexico has 127 million people, so 18 million homes watching him means he's pretty famous over there.
