Full disclosure, Kovalev fan.
I think this fight will be similar to Maidana-Floyd 2. As evident by the first fight, the longer it went the better Ward was getting. Now, I fully believe the Kovalev won the fight and the judges got it wrong, but everybody can see that Ward was winning more rounds towards the latter half of the fight.
As with any boxer vs puncher(boxer-puncher in this case) match up, the rematch generally favors the purer boxer. I fully expect for Kovalev to take 2 of the first 3-4 rounds and 2-3 of the remaining 8-9 rounds. The score cards should be similar to the first fight(albeit slightly wider), minus the knock down, as I don't think ward will get knocked down again(certainly if he stays on his feet the first 2 to 3 rounds). Scores are expected to be 115-113 to 117-111 for Ward.
Now, having said all of this, Kovalev still has chances in this fight. If we look at the first fight, we can see that Ward was beat up. At the end Kovalev looked tired, but Ward looked beat up. At 33 getting beat up for 12 rounds only saps strengths from future fights. Additionally, the rounds that Ward did win were won through attrition; Ward took a lot of punishment to win those rounds. And as you can tell, even the shots that were not connecting clean on Ward left him with bruises all over his face: Kovalev's power is real.
And finally, due to the nature of Kovalev's power any mistake can be catastrophic for Ward. A knockdown or 2 can close the lead Ward would naturally be building. And, as always, the threat of a K.O. remains.
So, to sum it up:
As a Kovalev fan, I believe that Ward should be favored going into the second fight, as all the evidence from the first suggest Ward gets better with more rounds vs a given opponent, but Kovalev's power and aging/damage variables give Kovalev a real chance to win.
Prediction: UD Ward(116-112)
We'll see if Ward actually figured him out or not. I saw Kovalev gas a little. Not sure he was figured out.
That's the problem. Ward hasn't figured him out. I'm not saying Ward won't win but to think he'll have an easier time with Kovalev the second time around is delusional. Kovalev boxed and took his foot off the gas pedal, arguably from the body shots Ward landed and of course the clinching.
so we should prepare ourselves for a non stop clinch fest? this is why the fight is pointless. we already know thats the only way ward can "win" he simply can't box with kovalev as we saw in teh first fight so he's going to hold and bend below the waist a lot more than he did in the first fight. cool? and of course after the fight ward fans will pretend that it never happened. said the same thing in the first fight and they actually are pretending now that it was kov initiating the clinhes. i then proved them wrong by posting a ton of pics of ward holding but it still didnt matter.
similar to Pacman Bradley II.. first fight the whole world knew Kovalev/Pacman won and they still gave it to the American, this time justice will be served.
Ward doesn't punch hard enough to knock out a good light heavyweight.
No to mention his punch output isn't exactly prodigious. This would be more like a theoretical Maidana v Broner 2, except the right guy won the first fight in that case.
The case for Ward being like Broner is: Low output, clinchy, inflated sense of self worth, and some people (wrongly) compare him to Floyd. Though, Ward is better than Broner
Ward got that tackling game. Come in low and grab your opponent by the waist and hang on. Inside game. So smoove. It's what you came to see. Real boxing.
correct. this fight is even more dictated by Ward's team than the last time around. so you are going to see Ward's refs and judges again.
Just like Holyfield came in low with his head and his greco roman clinch game. it's going to frustrate the crap out of Kovalev.
Ward unlike Jacobs actually did expose something in Kovalev. . A legit telling weakness like Holyfield exposed in Tyson 1.
It's that Kovalev has 0 inside game. I mean 0. he has no close range hooks to the body. Or head. he has to step back to reset when the opponent is too close.
this is going to be exploited even more this time around.

Ward and Floyd fight nothing alike.
Maidana and Kovalev fight nothing alike.
There are no common opponents here and even if there were, if you know a lick about this sport, you would know triangle theories don't matter.
Red K.
Seems like you DKSAB.

Kovalev has way better boxing skills than Maidana. And Ward and Mayweather fight totally different. I know what you're trying to say. As far as boxer vs puncher. But Kovalev has good boxing skills to complement his power. Who knows what can happen, a lot of different intangibles. I'm inclined also to lean a little bit towards Ward. But I'm sure adjustments are going to be made for both guys in preparation for the rematch. A lot of different intangibles, we'll see what happens.
What's your fawking obsession with ggg? It has nothing to do with him yet you. Bring it up? Wtf?
Back on topic/ I say kovo comes out like a beast cause Ward never phased him but he clearly bucked Ward a couple times. He can't let it go to the cards
Get back in your lane, kid. Wait for me to quote so you can you talk to your highness.
You're now quoted. You can talk now.
OK so I am not always right.Big deal. I will still make predictions. You are calling me an alcoholic and a loser because I picked GGG to KO Jacobs. That's a bit extreme. About 90% of this board predicted GGG would KO Jacobs just as I did. Are they all drunks and losers? Are you really so much smarter and better than everyone to talk down to me and others the way you do? Have you never made a wrong call on a future fight? I don't drink so I can't be an alcoholic.
No, it's the fact that every time an Eastern Euro name comes up, you do nothing but suck them off and always claim they will KO someone out. As if they are some time of monsters.
Yea... Like Golovkin was gonna knock Jacobs out cold, right? :poke: :alcoholic :loser:OK so I am not always right.Big deal. I will still make predictions.
