There is no doubt about Toney's greatness. I rate Toney over Hopkins.
Hopkins couldnt carry Toney's spit bucket.
In terms of skills, i put toney in the top 20 all time..
Perfect timing, I've been going through a Toney kick lately, watching a lot of his fights.
Obviously when in shape at middleweight he was amazing but even as he got fatter and fatter his ablility to shoulder roll beautifully while fighting from phone booth distances never waivered.
ATG IMO :boxing:
How amazing was he really at middleweight?
Struggled and arguably lost to Sanderline Williams, struggled with Merqui Sosa, struggled extremely badly with Reggie Johnson and got a gift and flat out lost and robbed Dave Tiberi.
Got a draw with Mike McCallum that most felt he lost.
Then his only good win at the weight against Micheal Nunn he looked like sh*t for most of the fight and was losing widely on the cards before pulling out the stoppage.
I don't see the amazement.
There ain't no logic in looking at his fights happened after even he knew he was shot and was trying to milk his name. So, the lossy part of his career shd go oıt the window.
Imo one of the best mechanicians n technicians. (mechanician, thus a new word was created by Rovito :b )

I think now is as good a time as any to point out that he has another fight scheduled, for May 13th against Mike Sheppard (24-20-2).

Holy **** seriously? I'm actually curious enough to watch that

Personally I think James Toney was an all time great, but waned to know what the rest of the world thinks.
He was great then he started slacking off and putting on pounds. I wish he would of stayed focus, could of been even better imagine that!
Sorry guys but amongst all the love here for James you seem to conveniently overlook his multiple failed steroid tests?
Even in an era of laughable testing protocols, he was exposed as a cheater and that HAS to tarnish his "legacy".
I have followed Toney's career from him being a middleweight and there were obvious signs that he was juicing well before he even got caught IMO.
All-time great. He just struggled with discipline and keeping in shape. Hung around HW division too long. If he could have controlled his weight he could have ruled the LHW and CW divisions with ease.
