And it might seem so obvious, and so simple, but after watching the Berto fight, it's his ability to move his body, and be in a certain spot that he wants to be, just as fast as he can throw a punch.
It's uncanny, and freakish how fast his movement still is, and how incredibly explosive and athletic he is. I watched him throw and land a leaping left hook with such velocity and speed, and the most astonishing thing was how fast his legs and body were able to be at the target along with his landed punch.
It's like he teleports, and goes into warp speed. It's freaking crazy. Also, I watch a bunch of fighters hitting mitts on YouTube, and am at awe at their speed, but when you realize that Floyd has the same speed, but also the same movement speed, then you realize how he's damn near impossible to beat.
Seriously, next time you watch a fight, highlight, whatever, watch how fast his body is able to travel along with his punches.
Yes, his Athleticism, his the velocity of his left hook. This isn't tested against A-level Fighters in their Physical prime and at their strongest weight classes. We seen in the Passed his prime Pacquiao fight that he beat him(Pac) by the jab, and judges think that is enough. Yet these traits you mentioned that he looked so great in in his upper body movement, the speed of his left hook and his right hand, they were non existent in that fight. Pacquiao was dodging that left hook so easily.
Pacquiao was getting tagged by check left hooks all night long it wasn't even funny. In the eleventh and twelth round, Floyd was toying with Pac at that point, landing the lead and check left hook at will. You must have been watching a different fight buddy.
And you say his speed and reflexes were none existent against Pac? What a joke! There's a reason Pac had the lowest punches landed in that fight. Floyd was slipping, rolling, and dodging Pacquiao's blistering combos like the real life freakin Black Panther.
And I'm pretty sure that Canelo was a bigger and younger live dog when Floyd fought him, and Floyd was way past his prime. Cotto was four years younger than 35 year old Floyd, and Pac too was two years younger than past prime Floyd.
The only fighter who was Older than Floyd were Mosley, Dela Hoya, and Marquez, and guess what? Dela Hoya was the man at 154, outweighed Floyd by a huge margin, made him move up, and made him wear pillow gloves, and still got beat.
Mosley was just coming off of a KO victory of Marquez and was rated as P4P nuimber three. In fact, when Floyd schooled Marquez, Jim Lampey, Emanuel Stewart, and Max Kellerman all said that any permutation of a fight between Floyd, Pac, and Mosley would be the biggest fight in boxing, and they all agreed that they wanted Floyd to fight Mosley even more than Pacquiao because Mosley is a full fledged welterweight and a big guy.
Floyd took that fight and schooled Mosley. After the fight, Jim and Max tried to make excuses but Emanuel Stewart thanfully was sane enough to realise what a total jackass he would be if he did that after he and co were the ones accusing Floyd of ducking Mosley, admitting that he couldn't make any excuses anymore.
The closest to complete that we'll ever see, he could do it all, he grew up trying to take all the strengths from all the great fighters he watched while avoiding weaknesses, he saw the flaws that the philly shell defense had in his dad and uncle so he mixed that up with better movement and bending at the waist to make his defense almost perfect, the man was a dedicated student of the game from a very young age and he never stopped trying to improve all his life.
He also had the mental toughness to go through tough fights and bite down despite his naturally defensive style, most pure boxers hate being hit and get discouraged under pressure, we saw this man stand and trade and beat offensive fighters at their own game, we've seen him bleeding, exhausted, broken hands, down on the cards but he still managed to stay tough and focused and always closed the show. That combo of skills and mental fortitude is extremely rare.
Great comment. Mayweather NEVER had a jab, until the age of 33, he had one of the sharpest, and multidimensional jabs in the business.
Thats crazy. How you never do a certain thing, and when your old, all of a sudden you have mastered it.
Yeah he did fought prime fighters. Prime B-level fighters like Maidana, Ortiz, Guerrero. all other A-level fighters were either already beat up, passed their prime KTFO. That's your conclusion, fighting every B-level fighter that is infront of him and absolutely looked horrible against a Passed prime A-level fighter in Pacquiao and Cotto.
Circumstantial disadvamtages fam. He was 37 and they were half his age and outweighed him by 15lbs. To put into perspective, put SRL at the same disadvantages, he would get beat df up and possible killed in the ring.
80% of Floyd's resume is twice his size and a nice portion of them are half his age.
While 80% of SRL's resume is his same size. Its amazing that Floyd could even win. This is a 130lb fighter nearly 40yrs old, fighting men half his age and 15lbs bigger.
Not only does he win, but he humiliates them. This man is byfar, the greatest in history. It will never ever in the history of the sport be a fighter who can show this type of dominance, against this level of opposition, this consistantly, and at those circumstantial disadvantages. Greatest to ever do it, BY FAR!

He fought and beat ALL that was in front of him he was not in his prime either , he fought these guys at the same point he was at, same era, after beating them they came out later and did great things, he also beat them coming off the back of one or more of their best wins, he never beat guys coming of loses.
This he didnt fight prime guys is a load of BS he fought guys the same prime he was in , he fought the best of this era all being on the same timeline give or take a couple of years and he stayed on top for nearly 20 yrs .
Man was real .
No, I'm not saying anything or accusing you of something, I just made a point that these traits are untested against ATG/HOF fighters in their primes.
In a way, I agree. But also, I can see how his style can actually nullify like 97% of boxers in or around his weighclass in the history of boxing. Random number. Basically, barring a handful of fighters, I think he can beat anyone.
It's basically a combination of things - having an almost flawless knowledge of how to control distance, perfectly timing his opponent's movements, his unreal reflexes and reaction times (even well into his late 30's), etc.
Having said that, I still think his ring IQ is overrated. All this "smartest fighter ever" talk and whatnot is silly. He has a very high fight IQ, no one can deny that, but it was his speed and razor-sharp reflexes (i.e. things you are born with, not really things you can learn) that made him so hard to beat. So many hard punches that were thrown his way missed only by a hair. So take away his reflexes and what do you have? Just an annoying cunt of a boxer who'd have probably got knocked out like ten times by now.

Homie, you're taking to tothe wrong one. I'm not a Floyd fanboy, and I'm not gonna sit here and defined Floyd. Whatever you believe, is what you believe.
This TBE skills you mentioned of are untested against Prime A-level Fighters at their best weight class. They don't even look so good against a B-level Maidana or a passed prime Pacquiao, and looked absolutely ugly in a C-level Berto.
I didnt even mention skills, I'm talking purely of his physical ability.
Rhythm and timing. He is the best ever at disrupting his opponent's rhythm and then timing them. There's a reason why most trainers watch film of him over and over.
Skills can take you so far, but the difference between LeBron and Paul Pierce is LeBron can jump over his head, and have his nuts hang on his forehead.
Floyd's physical abilities are unparalleled, even to this day. You can know to do something, but to be able to do it, that's a different story. I'm sure a guy like Luis Collazo knows to do this or that, but to be able to execute it at the highest level, and be a step ahead of your opponent, because your muscles rev up that much quicker and faster is such a huge advantage.

You gotta give it to his talent but also the pure dedication he had to the sport. Floyd never lived the type of life he portrayed until he retired from the sport. Dude was a gym rat 100%.
Exactly. The sacrifices the guy had to have made just to still be able to be this quick is nuts.
And the reason for randomly watching this fight was because I was comparing Thurman to Floyd's speed, and thought Thurman's youth, and incredible athletecism mixed with his power, and style could really beat Floyd at this point, but then watched the Berto fight, and I'm sitting here like woah, Floyd is still so freakishly quick and fast.
His reaction time is out of this world, and I think he'd slip and rip him up all night.
he's definitely a great, but at the same time he wasn't an invincible fighter in my eyes... but indeed his body movement was close to un-natural, and that is all about his upbringing, i think he was trainined for 3 or 4 years old to move, punch, etc, and that all pays off in the long run.
he was definitely one of the smartest ever from a business perspective... once his business mind took over that's when i believe he started to be better from more than just an in ring perspective,...that's the unfortunate part of boxing, some of his fights in different jurisdictions, judges, etc, he would have lost...Castillo first fight. had that actually been recorded as a loss, irrespective of winning the rematch, he wouldn't have had the same aura, so that's where he managed throughout the business end of his career to be smart and picking the right fights at the right time.
so overall he was super great in both categories, in-ring and out-of-ring.
Even if he you took away 30% of his skills, his natural physical ability is seriously on prime RJJ levels, but that rarely gets mentioned. He's a freak of nature, even at this age.
And his reflexes, no seriously, I literally think he's as quick as a big cat. And I'm not even remotely joking. I could be exxagerating, because I just got done watching the Berto fight, and my mind is all amped up, but seriously, he reacts as fast as an actual leopard or Jaguar, it seems.

Mayweather is better than everyone cause he learned pretty much everything, fients, distance, traps, etc etc on top of his natural ability. Today fighters only have a few traits not all, and mayweather imo has them all.

It's why he incorporated the Philly style. He could process information so quickly that it was easy to mitigate any hit and land a hard counter. Floyd is a much better fighter than most people give him credit for sadly.

Ive fibally narrowed it down to why Floyd is just that much better tgan the rest.... | BoxingScene Community
