Lost.
Sorry, Kovalev won. Surprized you all are kidding yourselves. You can't even call it a close fight. Ward didn't get dominated but it's pretty easy to see he lost this fight. Commentating was pretty bad on Jones part
And even outside of effective punching ( which kovalev win) he also pressed the action while Ward ran and held. Robbery in my book.
For the record though, I thought ward would win.
1000000% lost.
But gee the amount of ppl (including journalists) who have came out as totally bias and one eyed has surprised me... Paulie Malignaggi one of them...
One of the biggest all encompassing conspiracies in boxing in ages.
So you discredit Kov for fading and give credit to Ward for doing less than him. Makes sense.
modern boxing is starting to piss me off. Ward gave such a lack luster effort in this fight and he is still getting credit from some people. Not only that but Kovalev made the fight, he had to chase Ward down.
Now I understand if you use footwork to move away but still end up kicking your opponents ass like Robinson vs Lamotta or whitaker vs Chavez (all competitive fights) but when you run all night and simply try to cut the round down to 3/4 of fighting and try to steal it with a jab, that's cracking the system, not beating the fighter. Not only that, but Ward did barely any effective punching, the dude ran and clinched all night - it was a mediocre display for someone to be stealing a fighters title who literally chased him down and in my books still landed the better shots, the entire night - save for a few rounds that Ward stole.
Lost.

this is funny because after the fight he said he loves ward but that he lost that fight
Not suprised at all, this was a robbery, Ward is a protected fighter, that was obvious with him getting all his super six fights at home and a lot of the refs too. Kovalev clearly won that fight but he should have know this would happen in america, especially vegas, to him, nobody i know thought he could take a decision
I'm surprised Kovalev's team didn't demand judges from other countries. Were they so confident that they would win by KO? All American judges and referee....That was a bad deal for Kov. I know lots of people thought this could happen but I wasn't so sure about that.....I was wrong.
How am i wrong if he lost most of the whole second half of the fight? He might have picked up his activity but he was missing alot as well. Ward was more precise and won 5 of the last 6 rounds.
You said Kovalev faded during the second half, I said that Kovalev didn't fade, he in fact picked up his pace. Ward merely picked up his pace as well and still wasn't enough to match Kovalev's. The amount of rounds won is irrelevant to my statement.
This silly bickering already took up too much of my time. In the end... :gives: I'm out.
I can't stand hearing that. How does it work? Do you score the fight, and then apply a "champion bonus" after the fact? Do you give the champion every close round? A specific percentage of close rounds?
It's dumb is what it is.
I agree with you. Nobody should be given an advantage like that. It's a ridiculous notion just like P4P is a ridiculous notion.
I thought Kovalev deserved the decision without any of that "take the belt from the champ" crap.
I'm not eluding to anything. Just stating a simple fact that you are wrong in pointing out that Kov didn't do much, Ward just picked up his own pace. In fact Kovalev actually picked up his punch output in 6-7 compared to round 1-6.

No, im just saying he slowed down and ward looked fresher and sharper later on and won rounds. I don't know wtf you are trying to elude to.

Kov slowed down as a result of the body shots. The early body work paid off for ward alot of ppl are overlooking that aspect of the fight.
Ward then managed to edge alot of mid to late rounds by controlling the pace and being alot more accurate and defensively sound. Kov also gassed later on because ward became harder to hit after figuring out kovs range.

Then what does that say about Ward. He actually threw less and landed less than Kovalev in most of those rounds.
I think most people are giving too much credit to Ward for picking up the pace, when in fact he just picked it up enough to keep pace with Kovalev.

I think he just barely won. You have to realize kov didnt do that much the last 6-7 rounds and kind of faded, ward looked alot sharper and was hitting him with body shots/jabs and making him miss. I think it was a very close fight and after the first 5 rounds i didnt think ward would manage to fight his way back into it but he did. I had to give ward a big portion of the last 7 rounds.
Was a great fight though i enjoyed it, regardless of who really won i wouldnt have been mad at the decision.

No one claim it's part of a criteria in scoring a fight. It's a boxing term and it has been used for 100 odd years, people use that term in boxing if they feel a challenger was given a fight that he didn't deserve.
Yeah but the point is it's a load of bullsh*t
Boxing is full of quotes like these....Is it? Like what?
You literally did say that.
I don't know how many times I need to explain this but no the champion DOESN'T need to go and "take" the belts to win. Literally, he doesn't.
There is no where in any scoring criteria that states this.
Am sure you can dig them up.

No, it is stupid. That's just looking at it from a logical perspective.
In regards to actual scoring and criteria of scoring, it isn't included nor is it included in any kind of rule.

Again no one said the challenger didn't win it because he didn't take the belt from a champion, a challenger like last night didn't do enough to beat that champion period! Hence the "A challenger has to go out there and get the belt", boxing is full of quotes like these, whether they are motivational or real or fake.

Your opinion is wrong.
It's literally the eqiuvilent to saying "I scored it for the man coming forward because judges tend to score it for the aggressor"
It's literally meaningless.
No your opinion is wrong. I don't believe Ward won period. I don't think he did enough to take the belt from the champ.
Well yeah that's great if you want to use that or ideology as a motivational tactic.
But to say that the challenger didn't win because you "have to take the belts from the champion" I'e you have to "leave no doubt" and "beat him clearly" is ridiculous and non-sensical. All you have to do is win regardless of how close.
