It's worth noting for all the casuals who say things like margarito fought through it and malignaggi etc,
I think things have become a lot safer for fighters in the past few years too. There's a few exceptions still of course.
I believe there's no way a ringside doctor or commission lets Malignaggi keep fighting if that fight was today.
Of course fighters will fight through it. They get in the ring and fight for a living, they're wired up different to most people.
No, you do not have 0% vision but it does affect how you see. I know both as a medical student and as someone who suffered an orbital fracture. Having said all that, like I keep saying, many fighters have gone on with such injuries or worse and gone on to win. Brook quit, fair enough but it makes him a lesser fighter and a lesser man than others who have stepped into a boxing ring.
That is my final word on the matter.
Brook didnt quit, his corner threw in the towel. Im fairly sure Brook wanted to keep going.
No. I have had a trapdoor orbital blowout fracture myself, I know what I'm talking about. There are varying levels of severity on blowouts, and it ranges from simple fractures without bone displacement to trapdoor (trapped nerves and muscles) to complete blowouts with no trapping.
Brook had a trapdoor fracture bad. You could tell by the unctonrollable blinking. When I had a blowout fracture I couldn't stop blinking. It was worse because it trapped the nerves and muscles. Afterwards I blew my my nose as I felt blood had gone down the back, and it got even worse and my cheek and eye puffed up with air and I was blinded by the pain.
With a trapdoor fracture your nerves are literally rubbing against shards of broken bone. The blinking and water ruins your vision. You have 0%.
It's only just bearable but not when you are breathing heavy and getting punched in it. Brook is not lesser at all. He was in the ring with GGG and GGG was absolutely hammering him and targeting the eye.
Also Eddie Hearn put the Xray on twitter.

First off, how did you get his xray?
Second, I've seen many fighters fight on with such an injury, so Brook is lesser than them in the balls category. At least admit that, regardless of you're thinking on the stoppage.

If you had a broken orbital bone in with GGG, you would want to fight on right? :lol1: hahahahahha

It's worth noting for all the casuals who say things like margarito fought through it and malignaggi etc, that they did not have the type of blowout fracture of the orbital floor where all the muscles and nerves got trapped in the fragments of the broken bone (trapdoor). When the floor opens up and traps the nerves the fighter is in much more pain and danger because vision goes to pot. The protective fluid from around the eye drops down into the cheek. The trap can also (rarely) cause a clot or cut off the blood supply and can be fatal. A sign of this is when they shine the light in the eyes, if the pupil doesn't respond. You want to see another bad blowout fracture take a look at john mugabi vs duane thomas.
All you have to do is show them the pacquiao and margorito fight and show them margarito's eye now and they should keep there mouths shut.
"He's a very tough guy," Roach said of Margarito (38-7, 27 KOs). "I was surprised how tough he was. He has the worst corner. They probably ruined his career by not stopping the fight."
I don't think Margarito had exactly the same as he didn't have the excessive blinking which is caused by the nerves and muscles trapped in the fracture, which is the trapdoor fracture which causes uncontrollable blinking by damaging the nerve. But I bet it still hurt and his eye is permanently damaged now.
do we know which punch in particular caused the injury?

Not off the top of my head but if you watch the fight back, it will be when he started blinking erratically and pawing with his glove. Ref should have seen straight away, then corner. A doc should have been called up.

It seemed like a long reaching left jab.
Golovkin hit him with it and Brook signalled to his corner straight away that his eye had gone.
Well said. It is still a sport and we should want to see fighters get to fight another day. I don't want to see someone lose an eye because the corner wouldn't protect their fighter.
Agreed. Casuals and angry fans want blood yet they then turn around and have the cheek to take the high ground when refs or corners didn't step in in time for people like mclellan watson and blackwell. Boxing is an art, not a death sentence. Brook deserves massive respect for what he pushed through last night. It should have been stopped earlier.
If you're moaning that the fight was stopped too early, you're as casual as it gets.
If you think Kell Brook has no heart for not wanting to continue, you're as casual as it gets.
Fighting through an orbital blowout fracture (which is what he has from the pic) is a tremendous feat. I speak from experience. Not only does it hurt like hell, but you cannot stop blinking or keep your eye from 'flooding' with water. The double vision is called diplopia which is where the muscle(s) that controls the eye movement had fallen down into the fracture and got trapped among the broken bone. That means the eye cannot move up or down at the same rate as the other eye. The protective fluid from around the eye also drops down through the break as well. He was taking hellacious shots and he couldn't even see straight. In all honesty the fight should have been stopped as soon as they found out he had it. He may be getting a titanium plate put in. It's the left hand side where you can see the break in the orbital floor.

Anyone who blames Kell or the corner or is unhappy with his effort or is calling it an early stoppage DKSAB.

The ref should have noticed the typical signs which are excessive blinking and a droopy lip. Plus the double vision which he should have been aware of from the corner. It should have been stopped by a ringside doctor. Don't know where they were last night.
