If HBO makes $$$ from PPV... why refuse to produce Pac-Vargas?

This video indicates clash between Arum and Nelson who had different match-making ideas with Arum's boy Crawford. It also gives a clue why Crawford and Paqcuiao didn't happen. Arum thought it's too early.

I thought I've read something months ago about Arum threatening to move his fights to Showtime when the new HBO exec refused to buy them. I don't remember the name of the fighters. This was post Bradley 3. I believe HBO and Arum settled their differences and made some kind of arrangements. One of which is HBO won't have anything to do with PPV buys. They're not making any money from them anyways even in high profile fights. Don't know if this video is relevant.

HBO doesn't want the fight. Arum is saying it's going to be on Top Rank TV PPV Wow if Arum really goes through with that he will take a major loss unless Manny fights for peanuts. Without HBO or a major network producing and promoting the fight it will be a huge bust. Manny's last fight against Bradley who beat Vargas did what 400k PPV buys. Without HBO and with Vargas who NOBODY outside of diehard fans know I say this fight does 100k if Top Rank produces it themselves. How the F can you afford to pay Manny his close to 20m purse requirement? Even if HBO carried it I think it does less then the Bradley fight which LOST money!

Yeah they should have done everything in their power to secure the Broner fight. I don't think Arum wanted it at all. Broner, Garcia, Thurman, Porter, Khan, Spence, hell if you want to keep it all in house then Crawford is a no brainer. Whether it's Manny's team avoiding Crawford or Arum not wanting to risk Crawford regardless that's the easiest fight to make as both are signed with Top Rank. Also a big factor is besides the Floyd fight Manny's PPVs the last few years have declined badly. Bradley, Algieri, Rios all PPV bombs. He's now a fighter who demands a huge paycheck but who's PPV returns don't really justify that anymore. Plus he's got a promoter who is more headache then worth right now. If Manny was 5-10 years younger and his PPVs were still high then maybe HBO would move mountains and deal with this crap.

This fight will probably do like 200k at best unless they absolutely load the undercard, well done to HBO for not buying this garbage, no boxing fan should support this fight. I love Pac, but I love the sport more and this fight is everything that's wrong with the sport.

Can't they do an independent PPV like how Holyfield used to do? or what Shane and Mayorga 2 did?

I feel like there is more to this then just money. Arum has been openly and publicly feuding with HBO all year. Manny screwed HBO with his comments leading up to the Bradley fight which NOBODY wanted in the first place. Every other month Arum is firing shots and making threats to HBO because he is not getting the money and fight dates he wants. And HBO seems to be giving him the finger by giving the money and fight dates to fighters from other promoters like Golden Boy, K2, Main Events ect. Canelo, Kovelev, GGG, Ward are getting the money and dates instead of Top Rank fighters. And now Bob is trying to force a PPV around the exact time that HBO has had a PPV penciled in all year. A PPV that sucks by the way after Manny's last PPV bombed. Seems to me HBO is trying to show Bob Arum the door. And Arum and Manny had much better options to pick then Vargas. If they were willing to move the date or pick a better opponent I don't think this is an issue.

I think HBO dropped out of the Manny Pacquiao business when he made those anti gay comments, they were already tied into a contract for the Pacquiao vs Bradley 3 fight and said they couldn't dishonor their contract with Manny at the time they made it known that they support LGBT and strongly opposed Mannys views. Pacs comments destroyed him with every sponsor, network, no big name will ever align themselves with him again. I don't even get why Arum bothers staging the fight in the USA? Is Arum really this naive? he would make more money making that fightin Europe or Asia, Pac is basically a Pariah in America now with the big name companies and networks. It's profit, fights on regular HBO are an expense. So it's a win for them. It shrinks their own audience so it's not a win-win. If the suits see viewership drop each year, budget gets cut and the cycle continues...

I read somewhere they take 5% of the PPV. 900k x 60 = 54 mil, 5% of 54 = 2.7 mil That's not very much at all considering marketing costs, production, and paying for replay rights.

Its also quite possible that Arum was asking HBO to guarantee a minimum number of buys (in order to keep him from losing a pile of money again), and they might not have been willing to do so......
