WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders is being lined up to face Canelo Alvarez, if the Mexican star gets past Liam Smith on September 17.
After a mooted fight with Gennady Golovkin evaporated, Saunders should box on the Canelo-Smith undercard in Las Vegas and will then target the victor in the main event.
Promoter Frank Warren told Boxing News magazine this week, “It was close but then the summer thing was out because of Bill being injured. After that it became a little bit difficult with the finances of it.
“But Bill will be on the undercard in Las Vegas with a view to fight the winner of Smith-Alvarez. We haven’t sorted an opponent out yet but that’s where we’re at, that’s what we’re putting together.”
Canelo stood down from potentially fighting Gennady Golovkin himself and vacated his WBC middleweight title, which has passed to “GGG”. Canelo though has been operating at a catchweight of only 155lbs, just one pound above super-welterweight, the division where Liam Smith holds the WBO title. After that fight Canelo could bounce back to middleweight, box Billy Joe Saunders and, perhaps, in the long run get on course for a unification battle with Gennady Golovkin.
U can't be serious. The Mexican ****bag, who wouldn't fight GGG at 160 because he's "not a middleweight", but he'll fight that other ****bag BJS, who also bottled it against GGG, at middleweight!! WTF. And once Canelo wins that, what next? Does GGG line himself up a shot for that belt and Canelo walks away from that one also. All these ****ers should be sent to one of those doping agencies because theymust all be on some serious smack.
The winner will be crowned king of the ball bags
Well if Canelo could fight BJS at 160 then there's no excuse why he couldn't fight GGG at 160. The whole point of him fighting Smith was to go back to their "natural weight class".
They're going to work their way up to 160 by going down then going up to 160 and fighting for a belt event though they just dropped one to avoid fighting somebody.
Also the whole card is looking good.
Canelo/Smith
Ustinov/Ortiz
BJS/Bum
wildcard

Nice plan by Golden Boy
Beat Smith then face Billie Joe for the strap and then fight Golovkin for all belts.
Good move on their part
Hope Saunders beats Canelo and disrupts the plan

Well that'll help people who are mad at Canelo. BJS has a tough time making 160, so Canelo would be moving up to 160 for that fight. I wanted a BJS/GGG fight, but couldn't really see BJS doing much against GGG anyways. Tough fight for Canelo though, Bill I would argue is the favorite.
Not necessarily. Smith and BJS have the same promoter and this could just be part of the Smith deal. Both of Frank Warren's fighters get paid and he doesn't have to put up any of the money himself.
No guarantee that Canelo would fight Saunders next, and even if he does, it is nothing courageous.
GGG can't pay guys enough, but they'll take a pay cut to be on Canelo's undercard. Danny Jacobs must be wondering how he can get in that line.
Im told he is taking less money for this U/C fight, if this comes to fruition... https://t.co/UuYY9iBplq— Steve Kim (@steveucnlive) June 30, 2016
He'll take a paycut now, and get a big payday and winnable fight with Canelo, rather than a big payday and imminent a** whooping from GGG.
That said, Canelo-Saunders is a very good fight.
100% not someone who can crack.
He fights a bum, i can guarantee you that.
Tureano Johnson it is then. Johnson couldn't put away O'Kane if his life depended on it. I think TJ's massively overrated and with Derevyanchenko moving into the #2 spot after he beats Soliman, I don't think Johnson will want to be in that final eliminator to badly.

Question is, who does GB have BJS fight? T.Johnson, Stevens, Lemieux, Quigely (lol)?

All of those would probably be considered for BJS. Maybe someone like rosado as well?
Saunders-Lemiuex would be an interesting fight to me
makes sense. would've thought GBP would prefer canelo-lemieux for his first fight at 160, but maybe warren forced their hand. it's a good look for the UK to be getting all these big fights anyway
Yeah, i thought it might be lemeuix as well. But Bjs is a better fight and bigger challenge for canelo.
Calling it now, BJS and Eubank beat Canelo & GGG setting up the biggest fight of the universe.
I think Billy Joe has a great shot at beating canelo. But Eubank jr over GGG? dont see that happening. If BJS and eubank DO both win, that would be a massive fight between the two of them

I've been very critical of Canelo about this whole GGG situation, but I have to say that Canelo-BJS is a very solid fight and it would be for a title. Very risky for Canelo, I might favor Saunders in that one as well.
