Canelo/Khan: HBO not releasing "awful" numbers. Glaser: 322k is the number! PPV Dead?

HBO said they will not be releasing official PPV numbers for Canelo Khan, that is quite surprising, the numbers must be extremely low and would possibly interfere with the Canelo GGG negotiations and would put more pressure on Canelo. Oscar, when asked before the fight, claimed the PPV would do "a million buys". This is, for now, the number we're working with. ESPN.com or someone else will also float numbers they've heard this week, from sources in the cable and satellite industries, and HBO and Golden Boy will either be silent or will deny the claims, without providing a number back. We've seen it happen before, such as Showtime Sports balking at claims that Mayweather-Guerrero did around 800-850,000 buys in 2013, without releasing anything official. They also didn't confirm the low buys for Mayweather-Berto in 2015, or the sub-one million buys for the two Mayweather-Maidana fights in 2014. But let's go deeper than just blaming Amir Khan's lack of star power or questioning sources and numbers that are out there. HBO saying they won't release the number, passing the buck to Golden Boy, who are unlikely to release the number, is enough of a sign that this pay-per-view was a dud. Whether that means 332,000 or 400,000 or 450,000 is not really important. What is important is that Canelo Alvarez alone cannot sell a pay-per-view, at least if you're putting it on him to go above 300,000 without a good matchup. A couple hours later Golden Boy reported that it did just "below 600k buys". 1.) They have a reason to lie, to not weaken Canelos starpower and negotiation power in his future fights, specially against GGG. 2.) 332k is below 600k. Even if 322k is wrong and the real number is about 400-450k, then this number speaks a clear message. You have to listen to the fans, they will only pay for fights they ask for! They want Canelo vs GGG not Canelo vs another handpicked welterweight. Also the May Pac fiasco hurt the PPV model endlessly. Fans waited 6 years for this fight and it came way too late, both guys old and out of their prime, one supposedly injured. Boxing fans will never put up with that again. Who knows if the PPV model will ever recover. Let's see how many PPVs Canelo vs GGG can generate. If it does less than Canelo vs Cotto then the model is dead. Hopefully this all sends a clear message to Golden Boy to make Canelo GGG in September.

If they sold over 300k it's OK... If they sold over 500k it's great... ... I fact Canelo fought a chinny stupid guy two divisions below him... The numbers are more than OK anyway. (If the fight sold only 300k+ we will soon find out in case Canelo signs the GGG fight easily...)

We have to realize Canelo doesn't have the names that Pac and Floyd had to help carry fights. They weren't making huge numbers otherwise either. If Canelo hit 600k that's extremely impressive. It means he didn't need Oscar to go above 300k. Think about the fights that Floyd and Pac did big numbers in. Margarito, Shane Mosley, Oscar, JMM (like 30 times with pac and once with floyd) and Cotto. Pac and Floyd are already established fighters who've been around forever and unless they have a good b side they're doing less than what Canelo seems to be doing at 25. 600k and Pac or Floyd can't reach that fighting the Khans of the world. 600k seems a little high in perspective. It has to be lower imo. Mayweather and Pac in their retirement fights got nothing near? I wonder what the numbers are actually like. If he's selling anywhere near what Pac and Floyd are doing with similar opponents then he's a mega boxing star. He's by far the biggest star in boxing world th Floyd and Manny gone.... Just not hitting those huge numbers yet. I think his fight with GGG does 1 million plus. There's not a bigger fight in boxing to be made and its 2 guys in their primes not 2 geezers with 5 years of excuses for not fighting each other.

I expected more, I really did. But 600k or there abouts is not a bad number. People are just so used to Floyd and Pacquaio hitting 1 million+ regularly from 2007-2013 that anything less than a million people see as a failure. I have stopped taking these dumb numbers seriously, especially the ones that says it did one million buys. Espinoza stopped releasing numbers since the Floyd/Guerrero. It's mind-boggling to me that they don't have any way of proving them in this day and age. They're all silly guesses. You gotta be an idiot to believe any of these numbers. Times are changing.

Why pay for this BS fight....I saw it on my phone through an app. People are going to stream BS PPV fights that are not worth paying for...Crawford/Postol is the next PPV stream :) If they did 320 than this is a good number considering total mismatch/no contest. Khan drawing power in US is... 30-50k ppv buys? I may be wrong here but I don't think that Khan added much to the table. If they did 500k + than it's a huge success and it proves that Canelo is actually a PPV star. Don't be mislead by Pac vs May numbers - those are not indicative. 2nd and 3d biggest PPV attractions sell 900k (Canelo/Cotto) and on paper it was competetive. I think that if GGG/Canelo makes more than 750-800k than it will be huge. It's competetive only on paper (at list 50% of potential buyers know that Canelo is no match to GGG) and GGG is not a PPV draw yet.

Considering the amount of hoopla that was done by goldenboy and all the talk that canelo was the new face of boxing 570k is not a great deal and it certianly didn't light the boxing ppv market up..... PPV in boxing is dying and fighters that are making 12 million dollars a fight that actually don't deserve that kind of purse ..I think it's been bled dry by bad matchmaking and over priced events, America pay far to much for ppv event compared with us in the UK...30 dollars maximum compared with $60 in the states....do the maths Denium where are you lol

Canelo, the face of boxing, so called biggest star in the sport doing 332k against a very well known fighter. GGG in his first PPV against a pretty unknown canadian fighter does 150k Cotto in his first PPV = 60k Cotto vs Canelo = 900k I'd say it doesn't look too bad for GGG when you put it like that. This thread isn't about haters like you though. It's about the landscape of boxing and if this actually helps making the fights the fans want to see. That cotto ppv was not a HBo ppv it was closed circuit event..

Cotto in his first PPV = 60k :rofl: you mean a CLOSED CIRCUIT PPV that wasn't backed by any network? Also hbo had a hopkins ppv if I remember correctly that same night. Cotto's 1st ppv that was backed by HBO did 225k buys. Way more than lilg.
