this was the fight that made me a hardcore......at my uncles house. a mexican fight party, when fernando had oscar on the ropes in the first round,I was going ape shiz...... never ever have I've been as a kid watching that fight...what's your take on that classic battle
It was a hell of a fight. I think the pre Trinidad Vargas would have defeated Oscar. Vargas could never take a punch as good after the Trinidad fight as he could before the Trinidad fight. When Vargas fought Trinidad he had never been knocked down. The Vargas vs Oscar fight was a real war from start to finish and a great win for Oscar. Vargas had always hated Oscar and trashed him without letup for years.

Good thread. That's actually one of the fights that made me into a very hardcore boxing fan. Vargas-Tito was great too. I was a casual before that.
I bet my brother $100 (never taken seriously, coz I was a casual) and a guy at the bar counter a beer. I was all machismo, knowing not too much of Oscar's pedigree. It was a great fight nevertheless. I bought the guy his beer!
Now I update my bro on boxing issues.
I remember that fight more than any other.
I remember how much I hated Vargas. It was sweet watching Trinidad KO him, but even sweeter watching DLH do!
Great fight.. One of my favorites... One of the few PPv fights that surpassed the hype..
The backstory and drama,, plus Oscar making a comeback and stopping the bigger vargas, it was great...
But idiots still think Oscar never won big fights and was soft...
Wasn't Oscar trained by Floyd Sr in this fight? I haven't watched the fight in years but I recall him attempting the shoulder roll lol. Would have loved to have seen a prime Vargas vs Canelo.
I think Mayweather was in the corner.
Vargas Canelo would've been sweet
All time great fight. This wasnt hype there was real hate and bad blood between these two. And Vargas was roided up for Oscar. Lampley's call as Oscar was knocking him out is pretty iconic too.
“LET ME AT HIM! There is so much desire in Fernando Vargas. But a better fighter is beating him NOW!… This will be the most satisfying moment of Oscar de la Hoyas’ career….If he can finish this guy….If he can make Fernando Vargas eat his words! If he can knock him out! and he does!” - Jim Lampley

Great fight. Such drama. Odd how today's big-name fighters rarely have great, re-watchable fights anymore. I feel like all the modern "great" fights are just *meh* (Canelo/Cotto, Hopkins/Kovalev, Pac/May, Wlad/Fury, etc, etc). We have to look to undercards and b-level fighters for real wars.
