I'm not a huge Calzaghe fan but it was as clear as day he was far far superior to Jeff Lacy ffs. I made a mint at the bookies. Boxing writers should know better than to choose national bias over intelligant observation. Too many yank writers pick yanks to win boxing matches even though the yank us clearly garbage like Lacy was.
Oh boy, I remember that hype. I sadly admit that I thought Lacy was going to win. Then watching Lacy get completely DESTROYED! Calzaghe ruined Lacy, there is no doubt about it!
It's the same reason why boxingscene have Deontay Wilder in the pictures at the top of the screen and not Tyson Fury
It's an american site and they fall for biased nationalism
Come to think of it there are a lot of similarities between Wilder/Fury and Lacy/Calzaghe
Wilder/Lacy, overhyped African American guy who's only fought complete bums and has a lot of KO's because of it, obvious glaring flaws in technique and ability, already somewhat exposed at low level, basically has nothing but a big punch against static opposition
Calzaghe/Fury, Unattractive style but highly adaptable, underrated by almost everyone, susceptible to knockdowns but recover quickly, not much power but enough to beat everyone he's fought so far, a lot more skilled and talented than people give credit for.
I can see Fury vs Wilder going a lot like Calzaghe/Lacy, with Wilder being completley exposed, outworked, outhustled, outmanned and made to look like a complete chump for 12 rounds. After the fight all the americans will say "we all knew wilder was a bum, prime tyson or ali would beat fury doe"
This is an outstanding post.
The irony was that Lacy looked worse against common opponents later in their career. And truthfully, he never looked good against anyone. Not even that powerful.
The hype for him was real bad. So bad that even though I picked Calzaghe to win, I was super nervous because a lot of people I respected thought he was going to get blasted.
Yet you think he's comparable to GGG.......
Calzaghe beat Lacy badly. I recall after the first round in his corner he was telling his dad that Lacy had fu*k all for him.
The first time I knew Lacy wasn't the goods was the Ross Thompson fight. All Lacy did was miss left hooks and looping rights all night. Fernando Vargas beat Thompson a few years before that I recall.
The hype peaked after Lacy destroyed and knocked out a washed up Robin Reid. Gary Shaw came on the mike post fight and stared yelling "Calzaghe we are coming for you!! We are coming to Wales to destroy you, etc"
I thought Lacy was good, I am not going to lie, but I saw it more like a 50/50 fight, as did a few of the British press. There is a build up show to the fight on youtube, you should watch it, is pretty good.
Calzaghe - Kessler is one of my fav fights. It is a brilliant fight, technical and exciting at the same time, and that doesn't happen often. Joe pulled away in the second half of the fight. I agree the atmosphere looked awesome, you can tell that the HBO crew were really enjoying the fight and the event as a whole. Its very rare that the pundits are marvelling at everything going on.
Lol, it must've been crazy man.
I remember watching Gatti highlights on youtube, and basically full fights of the other fighters. I saw just highlights of Gatti-Ward, didn't like it tbh. But I liked Gatti's other fights. It's weird I know.
Calzaghe-Kessler was pretty competitive, but it was a clear Calzaghe win. Kessler kinda let it slip away if I remember correctly. I would like to revisit that fight.
It's all about the eye test as well though mate. GGG is clearly a technical marvel as well as a beast. Lacy looked completely rank but seemed to be knocking chumps out. Look at Wilder right now. Knocking chumps out but is absolute garbage at boxing. He is going to get found out real soon like Lacy was.
wilder will get cam newtoned soon
It was very satisfying for me as well because the amount of arm chair boxing fans I know that listen to gangster rap and watch black gangsta movies thought the mean looking ripped black guy would win just because he is mean looking and black. I blame the Holywood and music industry for portraying blacks to be tougher than Whites when they are not.
also the country was in the lets worship the rapist cannibal old lady mugging child eating Tyson and lacy was compared to Tyson a lot
210 amateur fights is nothing to brush off. I wish I had just 1 amateur fight. I would talk about it forever.
Yeah me too, one of my best friend's has and I am jealous. I only ever had the balls to spar, I don't do anything anymore though. Wife and business and all that.
Yeah, i'm gonna be honest, I had no idea who Lacy was at the time. It was slightly before my time, and I was just following a few fighters. Jones, Mayweather, Gatti, Abraham, Calzaghe, Taylor, Hopkins, Winky. I'm just retracing the steps to see how Lacy could have been overrated. I see his ranking at the time, #3, solid opponents. He was the clear #3 from the looks of it. Looks like Kessler and Calzaghe were always ranked above him. And that was the fight I definitely saw, that was a super fight, I saw it live. Calzaghe vs Kessler, good fight. I wish I coulda been there, the atmosphere looked crazy.

I think Lacy was built up way too much, while Calzaghe was underestimated for sure.
It reminds me, a little, of the Ring magazine picks for Brook vs Porter.
21 experts/writers that were asked picked Porter, and 0 picked Brook. Of course Brook didn't win in the same emphatic fashion as Calzaghe did.
Ah ok, I would still consider him a pretty decorated amateur, and I think that actually added to the hype, as people were convinced that not only was he a wrecking machine, but he had the foundations and technical side to his game. It really was unbearable at times.

This was the fight that forced me to join and post on NSB. I couldn't take the Calzaghe slander any longer, and I couldn't take the uneven buildup of everyone saying Lacy was going to wipe the "bum" out. Reading all the comments and threads compelled me lol.

I know. And I know him and Taylor were in the same team. He failed to make it = didn't win anything.
