Khan is one of the most irrelevant boxers today that gets so much attention. He has no signature wins or dominance in any weight class. The most he can get credit is for the outing that he had against Maidana and that was a while ago already.
The only way that he would be relevant is that if by some miracle he beats Canelo but the odds of that are severely not in Khan's favor.
This mis-match is getting more attention than it deserves.
Canelo will not gain anything but a bigger bank account by beating Khan, and maybe getting exposure to the other side of the world.
This is a fight between two popular fighters, in no way this a super fight or two fighters in a collision course.
Gatti/Ward was entertaining but it did not define the weight class. Plus those two guys were matched evenly because they were at similar weights for a long time.
This is a huge jump to one of the best fighters in the world. I do not see in a boxing stand point any justification for this fight
And I'm telling you I agree that it's not justified in terms of athletic merit, but we're disagreeing on what makes a fighter relevant in the sport, which often doesn't rely as much on accomplishment or ability as simple support from a fanbase and promoters, etc. This is one of those cases. Khan is evidentially a very relevant fighter, but yes, it stinks that he's as relevant as he is-which is enough to get this match when the appropriate match has been stalled another in a long line of times at middleweight. He doesn't deserve a shot, but he's relevant enough to get a shot he doesn't deserve by any means.
It amazes me really, from the losses that have all gone unavenged, under performing in fights he was expected to shine in, it's mindboggling. So many WWs I'd favor to beat Khan too. I hope Canelo ends all this.
Such a hateful person you are, you were always on about how he hasn't done anything, but now that he does...... Must be that Khan got a big fight despite your boy not fancying his chances.
"earn it doe, no signature wins doe, I'd fight your left overs for a rematch and then your sparring partner doe"
smdh...
i agree, khan really shouldnt get this much attention, but he's about to fight canelo in a ppv and you just made a thread about him on a popular boxing site.
id say he's pretty relevant.
This fight is as irrelevant as Floyd/Berto. Berto had done nothing to get a shot like that. The only thing that he will be remember if anybody does is that it was Floyd's last fight if he never fights again.
Mostly because of his fast hands and work rate. Not because of his ring IQ.
Agreed but if you are winning rounds and not hurting your opponent you're outboxing them aren't you ?
You don't necessarily have to be a defensive wizard to outbox someone.
As far as him being relevant, people seem to apply double standards to Khan and act like other fighters have had to have a string of big wins or a marquee win over a huge name to get big fights.
It just doesn't happen. Other guys have got big fights beating the likes of Berto, Lopez, Prov and casamayor and with much weaker overall resumes than Khans.
It's not a good thing but it's the way boxing is nowadays.
The fact he wins virtually every round that he doesn't get hurt ?
I wouldn't say he's a master boxer but he wins rounds.

Where do people get the idea that Khan is some master boxer that can't be outboxed?

Because the only person that has done it is Mario Kindelan (ATG amateur) when Khan was 17 years old. Since then he has been either caught by a shot or bullied and outhussled, but not outboxed, and he has been against some very good boxers. Not to say he can't be outboxed, but I think it would take a special boxer. This fight will tell us more as I don't think Canelo will bum rush him like others have.
For the record I think Floyd would have outboxed him, he would have had problems at this age but he would have still got the job done.
Floyd would adjust to Khan, and pull out the UD win.
I don't think Khan has the ring IQ to compete against Floyd.

To me its much more interesting then if Alvarez had fought a C level middleweight as a tune up for Golovkin. This fight has an X factor, obviously Oscar and Eric Gomez thought that as well. The reaction to the fight already shows they have been proven correct. Sometimes a fight doesn't need justification on all fronts, Khan is a name, available, and willing.
There is still a bit of mystery with Khan and his talent ceiling, because of certain performances during his career where he has looked stunning, other times he has looked poor, so the inconsistency throws people, I don't think anyone really knows what to make of him. If he turns up, I mean really turns up, there is an unknown there that maybe he could do something in the fight. Canelo has shown enough deficiencies to give an educated eye food for thought.
I think it will be fun while it lasts, so lets enjoy it. Boxing fans can be so miserable sometimes. Khan is a big name - whether you like it or not, he brings something to the table. I think the way this fight sells will prove that. He certainly isn't irrelevant.
It will be a popular fight. If Khan pulls some miracle and wins it would be something to watch. But the odds on any normal fan will tell you that they don't know why this fight is getting made because the obvious advantages that Canelo will have.
Khan is to brave for the chin that he posses and losses concentration for long periods of time.

I think you're challenging his merit, and calling it his relevance. His relevance to the sport transcends what he's actually been doing for several years, for sure. When you're discussing relevance, you must consider his popularity. Popularity makes boxers relevant. It pertains specifically to the business and all of its opportunities and all of the matchmaking. You cannot separate them. At all. Like Gatti/Ward. You could've said "These guys are not relevant. No one believes they're the top guys in their class or top shelf boxers in the sport right now." but it wouldn't matter. Because the popularity made them extremely relevant. Khan's definitely a relevant name and has the interest behind him to prove it, and it's being proven every time he's in the headlines or up for a big fight like this, regardless of whether anyone thinks he's worthy of it. Khan is highly relevant. Period.

No doubt that this is a fight between two popular fighters but it doesn't define anything in boxing.
This is no different than Vinny Pazienza vs Rober Duran fight, popular but meaningless
I agree with your post. I was just shocked that this fight was made. Out of the blue, I was talking big crap about Khan, then he shuts me up with this power move. I wanted him to fight Kell. I am not sure if Freddy was dodging Khan, but it seems like Khan has the stones to step into the ring with the best. He needs to be slick and perfect when he fights Canelo to survive, but if he sticks and moves, he may last a good many rounds and possibly finish on his feet 1% chance.
War Khan! I love underdogs who step up!
My lil chihuahua is a fighter, fearless. He is 0 - 1 in the ring, but he believes in his power. Naturally I protect him, but he is a lil Aztec warrior with proper head dress and all.
Study the Mayweather fight!!!
But traditionally, Khan stays in the pocket too long and has been countered to sleep.
I'm not discussing his popularity. What has he done lately that would make him competitive let alone the favorite in this fight?
He did not face not even one top WW.

It's f*cking weird, right? His best win was Maidana in 2010. Since then he does not have one high profile win. Not a single one. His biggest fights since have seen him get up and knocked out by fighters who are good, but not great. He barely beat two average fighters. Yet people still talk like he's some elite fighter.
I don't get it. I thought Victor Ortiz would be the new Zab Judah, but apparently it's going to be Khan. Just like Judah, people love to assume Khan is better than he has ever proven to be.
I think what you mean to say is YOU BELIEVE HE DESERVES TO BE FAR LESS RELEVANT than he obviously is, for better or worse.
I'm not discussing his popularity. What has he done lately that would make him competitive let alone the favorite in this fight?

Agreed. Plus he has the Muslim world behind him. I like it that he is fighting Canelo. I was shocked when it was announced.
WAR Khan!

Khan will always be relevant. Its easier to just accept it, less painful for you.
From the moment he became the youngest olympic medalist since Floyd Patterson he was always going to be big. His rematch with Kindelan was one of the most watched sporting events of 2005. He has done a lot as a pro also:
Kotelnik, Malignaggi, Maidana, Judah, Collazo, Alexander, Algieri is a bunch of very good wins. A lot more than a lot of fighters who are thought of more highly.
Not to mention he is pretty exciting to watch most of the time, his fight with Maidana was a war.
He is going to be relevant until he retires.
He has good wins but nothing outstanding. Plus he cannot sustain a good streak
