Knocking out a glass chinned fighter isn't that impressive to me as stopping a guy who had previously never even been knocked down. Even though it was stopped by the ref it was still more impressive due to the upset IMO
Well, now you're talking about 2 different aspects. The upset and the KO itself. Sure he's a chinny fighter but he was never stopped in that fashion. And it also doesnt change the fact that it was pretty sick the way he spun and dropped. :lol1:
It's your opinion and Im not trying to change it, we all have our own. Just debating a bit since I aint got sh*t else to do. The Vincente KO of Dominguez SHOULD had been the rightful winner tho. That's one thing we can sure as hell agree on. :usa2:
I agree with Vicente KO'ing Dominguez. And why the hell was the ref counting? But no way is Glowacki's KO of Huck better than Canelo KOing Kirkland. Huck was stopped on his feet while Canelo made Kirkland spin and fall dumb on the canvas.

I can think of a couple I thought were better
Glowacki knocking out Huck
Yenifel Vicente knocking out Juan Dominguez, this was just scary
Both were better. Dan has them on his list but how the heck did they not beat out Canelo

I think you could include Rodriguez-Seals the knockout at the end was pretty devastating.
Another that a dude has as a sig .gif is that Lubin knockout over Camacho, you won't see a prettier left hook and it made the dude swim on dry land.
Man, they're going all out to promote Canelo as the next big thing.
honestly, that was my first reaction....
Quality of opponent considered...not my choice or even top 3, but couldve been worse
the KO of Huck was better because of the comeback and quality of fighter knocked out....Kirkland hasnt been a top ten contender in some time
So in other words it's a popularity contest. That's all you had to say. There were a few better KOs on the list, but Canelo won due to popularity. I don't care if 17 people saw a different KO, if it was more impressive then it's the better KO.
Not to take anything away from Canelo, because it was a good knockout(against a guy who is chinny). Not KO of the year IMO, but this was given by ESPN. I'll give an example: When I saw the Canelo vs Kirkland fight and James got knocked out I thought it was a good knockout and James was alright. When I saw the Vicente vs Dominguez KO I was literally concerned for the guy's life, that's how brutal of a KO it was, so it's the more impressive knockout
It's a mixture of the brutal ko and the stage it happened. Im sure there were many better kos in 2002 you could probably find some youtube of a fight in a elementary school size gym that was better but Lewis/tyson still won it because it was brutal and in front of millions more fans. If you have similar brutal kos the bigger stage is gonna win and that's how it's always been. Nothing new here.
Now granted these guys were fighting in what looks like a bingo hall, and I didn't see it live, but when I first saw this highlight......
Damn!!!!!!!!!

Does ESPN got a boxing staff that votes on this stuff or is it just Dan?
Definitely my choice for KO of the Year too doe.
That Edwin Rodriguez vs Michael Seals fight would get my KD of the Year award if that was an award. I think the final KD & KO wasn't THAT interesting, but there was crazy ass KD's before it.
I thought of the Rodriguez vs Seals fight as well, but you're right, the knock downs were more memorable
So? That's the reason it was not for fight of the year award and was for KO of the year instead. And other KO canidates were in small arenas in fights few fans saw. This was in a full baseball stadium in a broadcast on HBO that did their best live viewership in 10 years. It was one the most brutal KOs of the year and seen by probably 10x the amount of fans as any other leading canidate. Kirkland got ko by Ishida going on 5 years ago and many winners of this award were given to guys who have been kod before. For example Marquez was not the first to ko Pacquiao and Pacquiao was not the first to ko Hatton and Lewis was not the first to ko Tyson. Yet those guys won Knockout of the year.

I can immediately think of two others I was more impressed by, but this was the fitting of the award because it wasn't just the punch itself that made this the KO of the year, it was the way it came across. It was dramatic the way Kirkland's jaw twisted, he fell like a sack of potatoes, and laid there for quite a while. I credit excellent photography (and replays) as a big reason why it came off so dramatically.
It was against James Kirkland. Ishida even stopped him

Can't really bitch about it. As others have said, Canelo is one of the biggest names in the sport, and Kirkland was knocked out for that ass.
Ugonoh's KO of Quarrie deserves a shout out.
