That's what I'm thinking about their deal with Andre ward is brewing to be...
Great fighter, hard to work with, expensive, but no compensation. I'm willing to bet that the guy is earning at least 2M every fight, but roc nation is losing money on him...that's why nobody is hearing anything on this guy. Nobody wants to shell out anymore 2m for his tuneup fights. Pretty sure R&N knows now they F'ked up!
For ward's sake I can't believe he hasn't headline a ppv after four yrs remove from the super six tourney! Just wow...instead he's going to be the undercard...
Roc Nation came into the boxing game at the worst time, exactly when Haymon's hostile takeover was beginning. They wanted to make a big splash and they signed Cotto and Ward. Cotto was a good choice, especially because of the prospects of a Canelo fight, but Ward was a horrible decision. Even if Ward goes on to have some big wins, he will never generate profits for them.
Roc Nation should be using their money to sign hot prospects and so far they haven't. Maybe next year after the Olympics they can get some big signings but it doesn't seem like they have their priorities straight. They had a mini-deal with fox sports 1 that Haymon took over and supposedly they did a 3 fight time buy with BET, but after the Ward disaster, it appears that they got out of that deal? I'm not sure of that, but I haven't heard anything else about the BET series.
It doesn't seem like Haymon will work with them and vice versa and it also appears that some of the other promotions have reservations about working with them (like Top Rank) because they tried to steal some fighters. I just don't see a bright future for them in boxing unless they build a couple stars from the ground up. But that is really hard to do right now that Haymon has time bought up on all of these networks.
So overall, Roc Nation has made some dumb decisions but they are also a victim of the current landscape.
how minutes a day does jay z devote to running rocnation? probably very little. others are doing all the day to day ****. he is preoccupied with all his music work, yet he is the owner of rocnation.
So jay z working very very part time as a promoter with no experience vs all of these full time promoters who have been doing it for 10-30 years. hes getting his ass kicked.
2 million guarantee to a boring fighter who's not willing to fight anyone good
same exact problem ward had with goosen. goosen would want him to fight good fighters like bute and stevenson and he would say no i want truax and sartison. hbo would be like "is he serious lol"
now he just has a different sucker in roc nation. paul smith? zac dunn? pretend to try and fight ggg when ggg just signed a fight and then lie about it? we know his game.
"good fighter"
"bute"
lol

You can take it to the bank that ward isn't fighting again this yr. we r well into October and there hasn't been anything announced so it's pretty much a wrap that there's no plan. Plus even if he fights it won't be anybody credible cuz the promotion needs time and exposure.
Ward wants to fight on the Cotto-Canelo undercard and share the PPV profits and be a co-main event. BUT he only wants to fight another empty can like Smith. The man is delusional.
Maybe he took more damage during the Super Six than anyone ever realized and should go for an MRI or something.
You can blame Roc.
Jay Z is not bankrupt like Fiddy. He has the resources to get Ward a big fight, if Ward is open to it.
But, Jay Z never does anything if it might lose money. But you gotta think big, be willing to lose some money if you want to make it in the long run. And hopefully just be enough of a fan, that you don't mind losing a bit in the beginning to run your own boxing promo.
Ward's career might be finished.
That's the problem with some boxers, they have too much say on who they fight I am willing to accept when they don't want easy tune-ups and/or easy mandatory fights but it happens way too much now...
I don't really know If this three fight tune-up thing is true but we shall see, Ward shouldn't be fighting soft touches If he really thinks he is the best boxer in the world.

He can still fight on the Cotto/Canelo undercard....the main event is why a majority of people will buy it in the first place
He comes across as someone who just want to sneak in and out of the ring thinking that no one would notice.
This thing about GGG fans not wanting to see him fight Ward is so stupid to me. Those who say so are idiots. (Fans can't stop boxers from fighting who they want to fight in the first place, eg, Floyd fighting Berto, Garcia fighting Salsa..)
Bottom line is Ward can always get the GGG fight if he wanted it. Hagler put it succintly, "I'll even visit his house and fight him in his living room."
It will always be up to the fighters. No one else. Ward is not interested in GGG. He just pretends he is.

Jay Z has no participation in any of the business decisions for RNS. He is just a partial owner of the entity. This is why the whole Haymon/Jay Z beef with regards to fights between the two companies has no merit. It's just an excuse that fans bring up for fights not being made.

Although I'm not a fan of wards style, I acknowledge he's a skilled and great fighter. But you just can't compliment a guy who fights the paul smith of the world once a year.
Very true about goossen...
Ward complained and acted like he was being mistreated but in reality, goossen took him to the top, undefeated world champ, #2 p4p, super six winner, with an hbo contract plus announcing gig and had just gotten the 175 champ down to 168, plus always got him home field in Oakland..
Ward is basically the derrick rose of boxing..
ward was acting like goosen and hbo wouldn't give him fights which simply wasn't true. they wanted him to be one of their go-to guys but he simply refused to fight good opposition. he demanded to fight unknown guys and bums and thats why he never fought. why does he have fans?
They ****ed up because they threw money at a guy who doesn't want fight to anymore. Goosen got him anything anyone can ask for and he still b1tched and whined that it wasn't enough. He's either completely delusional about his value or he doesn't want to fight anymore. There's no other reasoning for his actions.

I'm pretty sure after wards first fight under R&N they realize he's just not going to bring in much capitals and the nature of his fight selections is just not going to cut it for them. I truly believe if ward doesn't choose to amp up the stakes R&N is just going to let him fizzle out...
And I still can't believe ward Hasn't headline a ppv or gotten bigger 4 yrs after winning the sup six! He had the boxing world at his feet then...
You can blame Roc.

Im a Ward fan and personally you cant blame Roc Nation just yet. Ward has made some questionable promotional choices, had he started his career with GBP or TR he wouldve been a star. Him being on a highly anticipated fight card even if its the undercard isnt a shame, I think its a move in the right direction. But if this time next year if Wards a champ again and hes not headlining bouts, the Roc is to blame.
