No doubt about it. Gamboa had great speed, great combinations and great power in both hands. That was a real treat to watch. I don't think Khan even compares with him for throwing fast, accurate, effective combinations with crushing power. Gamboa never really lived up to his potential. If he was correctly managed and trained and matched at his best weight he should never have lost a fight.
Yeah those where the good old days mostly. He never had a real top tier trainer, but the moment he went with having no trainer and going up for no damn good reason he fkd himself up. He still doing the same trainer wise so probably he's about to get axed. Khan is up there too, probably as fast but the power isn't quite the same. Both of them in the Olympics where stupidly fast.
There are so many other guys as well, but it's hard to say definitely who was the best most effective fastest puncher since it happens so damn fast.
i mentioned dokes in part because i hadn't see him mentioned yet, but the guy was very fast for a HW. very fast hands.
Dokes was definitely one of the fastest heavyweights ever in his prime.
I'm sure there were fighters in the 1930s and 40s that were incredibly fast, but it's hard to compare to the moderns because the film footage was poor.
Roy Jones, Meldrick Taylor, and others born into our era of high technology, we can capture their speed clearly on film.
It's scary when a guy's punches look regular speed in slow motion.
Khan is definitely the fastest above lightweight, possibly the fastest of all time in any division, but some of the smaller guys are fast too. Gary Russell Jr for example.
Khan doesn't even compare to Roy Jones.
It's Taylor. RJJ was faster all around but pure hand speed goes to Taylor. P4P I'd back Ali, Mike Tyson and Floyd Patterson had faster combinations but their hands were way shorter.
Willie Pep, Sugar Ray Leonard, Pac, Mayweather, Meldrick Taylor, Muhammad Ali, Khan, Floyd Patterson, Salvador Sanchez etc were names that came to mind
P4P I say Muhammad Ali
Fastest hands period probably Taylor or Leonard
Meldrick Taylor, Sugar Ray Leonard and Pacquiao from what I have seen. I remember Roger Mayweather saying that Howard Davis Jnr had the fastest hands of all time, but I have never seen him fight.
Hearns had very fast hands for a fighter his size. His hands seemed a bit faster than Leonard's hands. Meldrick Taylor had very fast hands. Pacquiao in his prime had great hand speed and he is still fast. Rigo and Lomo have very fast hands as did Roy Jones. Sorry, but I can't pick just one fighter. Khan is fast but I don't think he is as fast as he and his fans claim him to be. I left out dozens of fighters with very fast hands.
yeah people usually dont talk about hearns speed, he beat srl to the punch a lot of times, his hands were very fast.
taylor
I go with Jones....when meldrick Taylor and srl sat down on their shots they lost a lot of speed...they threw a lot of arm punch flurries
Jones put his body into his shots n still reeled off 4-8 punch combos
I do agree with this though, Jones threw full power shots and at extremely high speed. definitely the fastest guy when throwing full power shots.
Agree on SRL, took off some power in exchange for speed, could hit harder but would be slower, which isnt necessarily a bad thing, if you change up the speed of your shots, which smart fighters like mayweather like to do to keep the opponent guessing.
