I don't think Golovkin does any one thing so much better than Kovalev that you can say he's better, because it's clear that Kovalev is the more well-rounded fighter. And he's proven it against much better competition.
I think Golovkin is pretty good, and it will take the best to beat him, but Kovalev looks much more capable of beating that best level of competition.
Cutting off the ring? Golovkin, easily.
Not making clumsy mistakes that cost you knockdowns? Golovkin, easily.
Ability to switch it up on the inside? Kovalev has zero inside game (he doesn't need it, thankfully).
The reason Kovalev is favored against Ward isn't solely his skills, it's because of his size. Put Kovalev somehow in a 160 frame of height and reach with the same boxing style and skills, then who wins between him and Golovkin/Ward? It changes everything.

i'm not sure. golovkin is clearly the more fine-tuned technician, but i think kov may be a little more athletic relative to his size and therefore more dynamic. i give kov the slight edge because i think he's more adaptable, and we've seen him against better opposition so far
Polls up let's see who boxingscene holds in higher esteem.:boxing:
Gotta be Kov, I like his mean streak and his wins over Hopkins and Pascal are far superior to anything GGG has done.
Kovalev has the better resume so far because, apart from Superduck, he has not been avoided the way GGG has.
The next 12/18 months could change that though.
I believe GGG has a better chance of beating Ward than Kovalev has, because I don't believe Ward will ever fight Krusher.
Kovalev has a better resume atm, but Golovkin is a better fighter. He's just got more of an invincibility aura about him, whereas Kovalev I feel is more vulnerable. I don't know why people think Kova has better skills, cos he's a bit more fleet-footed? Golovkin's jab, offensive footwork (cutting the ring off), chin etc are vastly superior to Kova's.
Kova is world class as well though, don't get me wrong.
I am a fan of both, but am also objective. Golovkin's jab is not vastly better, Gennady cant jab to the body like Sergey, and Kovalev uses his jab more often. Kovalev got faster feet, much better at fainting, his straight punches are might be the best in boxing today and he is much better at breaking up clinches.
Golovkin got better chin, much better balance (probably because he has simply different style foot work) and stamina.
Kovalev seems to be the more rounded fighter, whereas the one thing Golovkin does, he seems to do it better than anything Kovalev can do.
Problem is GGG hasn't faced anyone who the fans really respected. Not entirely his fault, but you have to see if him cut the ring off and demolish a top tier world class fighter before you can rank him above Kovalev.
Kovalev is the better boxer. Some say GGG is better technically but I disagree. GGG has great balance and distribution of power. He cuts the ring off well. But as others mention Kov gets sloppy so goes ggg. He takes a lot of punches while hes stalking. Kov can fight off the back foot while maintaining power, and is better at making adjustments.
Kovalev\s win over Hopkins is the reason he's higher, though GGG beats Hopkins pretty easily if they had fought.
Exactly this. And also because generally ppl think Golovkin gets beaten by Ward but for Kova they are not sure about. That's a weight issue which should not be considered in a poll "who do you rate higher".
I think the same way about Ward vs GGG/Kova as these people think, but it doesn't make me rate Kovalev higher.
They are both huge.

Neither has had any truly noteworthy wins but at least Kovalev is up for facing top guys. Genady seems to be a bottom feeder and if he is better than Kovalev, we won't know it because he fights B and C level guys.
Golovkin is a lot better technically. Take away the ancient Hopkins and their resumes are about the same. I think Golovkin is more willing to unify as well.
I think most people on this forum are more comfortable rating Kovalev high right now based on his competition over the last 2 years as well as less hype to distort reality in his case. GGG is having a lot of backlash due to hype right now so people are not judging him clearly.
I think it is fair to rate Kovalev higher based on competition at the moment, but I genuinely think GGG will prove to be the superior fighter between the two. People are acknowledging already that Kovalev may be the best 175 pound fighter of all time, and I don't think that is too far off. GGG I believe will also prove to be one of the best at 160 ever, and that is a more impressive feat. Once he has some larger names on his resume, and people forget about insignificant hype and posturing, his quality will be more readily apparent to the unwashed masses.
Really unfair poll you not only have the Kovalev fans voting for Sergey but also the Ward fans, the Floyd fans, the Cotto fans, and the Canelo fans all voting against GGG.
Maybe because everyone except die hard GGG fans can see that Kovalev is obviously rated higher?
