However, Gomez was nowhere near weight when he arrived in Houston earlier this week -- a Golden Boy Promotions official estimated he was about 16 pounds overweight -- and Soto agreed to raise the contract limit to 145 on Friday. Yet when Gomez stepped on the scale, he was 147½ pounds. Soto weighed in at 142½, easily inside the renegotiated limit. Golden Boy Promotions and HBO officials huddled to discuss their options. Soto was willing to go through with the fight as long as Gomez was willing to melt off a little more weight and agree to a weight check Saturday morning to make sure he didn't balloon up more than around 10 pounds. Soto would have also received a chunk of Gomez's purse. However, Gomez's team said he could not lose anything else, and the fight was canceled. Now he won't fight or be paid. Eric Gomez said Soto (65-8-2, 35 KOs), 34, of Mexico, also won't be paid but will be able to keep the five-figure advance he was paid on what would have been a $250,000 purse.

if you're sick doesn't that help you lose weight? Quite the opposite, he's been sick for the past four days so its nothing serious so probably nothing serious. Basically he cant dehydrate himself to make weight as you need the fluids when you're ill.

Very disappointed, Pitbull is one my favorite prospects but I can't make excuses for him, he needs to become more disciplined, 8 pounds overweight is a ****ing joke. I was looking forward to this fight almost as much as the main event.

i've been saying this for a while, but nobody seems to listen: gomez is not a fighter with potential! you generally don't learn / develop the drive to box in your adulthood. gomez WANTED TO QUIT BOXING after he got his first six figure contract with GBP. on top of all of that, he's not that good physically. he's been far too inactive for a young fighter to stay sharp. he just looks like a worker in there, at least when i saw him last.
