Let's face it. I am a big Pacman fan, but I think it is time for him to retire.
As I have said it in other posts, I do not think he is willing to fight and risk his health anymore like in the passed. Ever since the Marquez KO, he has changed his style to being more cautious. Problem is, it's not what made him exciting and got him to this level. Sure he can beat the Brandon Rios, Algieri, etc but we saw what happened against Mayweather. All credit to Mayweather for doing what he does best, but the old Pacquiao sure as hell would have made it a more interesting fight. Maybe he would've gotten KO'd in the process, maybe not, but bottom line is we would be singing a completely different tune today.
Considering he was brutally knocked out, has a family, looking to be a senator and that his own trainer has Parkinson's from too much abuse, I can see why he is hesitant to fight like his old self. But then it is time for him to step down and hang up the gloves. He's entertained us enough but to go on and fight lower level fighters would just tarnish his legacy. I think the man should fight one last 'easy' fight in Manila and retire. I know a rematch with Mayweather is guaranteed money but if he isn't willing to take the chances and is going to hope on a gift decision, he is just doing the sport a disservice. At least with Mayweather he is honest and upfront about it. So if we continue to pay for his fights then that is our problem but at least we know what we are going to get.
Even though I'm not a big fan of Pacquiao, but I would love to see him fight Danny Garcia at 145 lbs, I thibk he can still beat a lot of guys out there, just keep him away from the counterpunchers and he'll be fine, but I think once he loses or gets in a close fight he should just retire, nothing left to prove.
Yes. The run is over. As a Pac fan I can tell you that it was amazing while it lasted, but all good things come to an end. The run is over.
Or maybe like Mitchell said, a sure win farewell fight in Manila or something, but outside of that it's time to ride off into the sunset.
I voted no. I think there are still a lot of good options for fights left for Pac (unlike Floyd who doesn't have much sellable options at this point). The only way he should retire is if he feels the same way as Floyd, that he doesn't truly love the sport anymore.
i suppose his options are vargas, prodnikov and crawford. i think he beats all three.
ya i think arum plan is to feed him to crawford before he retired to boost crawfords stock
Manny doesn't need to retire. Frankly, he owes us a free fight on HBO to make up for not showing up for this one.
Poster original is correct-Manny would still beat most guys at 147 so he shouldn't retire.
He is too gun shy imo I like Matthysse,Crawford,Brook,Thurman, and Khan all to beat him.
Not really, Mayweather's control of range is what mostly did it, he knew he was gonna have to take risks to land. That wont be as big a problem against the names you mentioned.
Yeah but Roach has continuously said that he himself does not see Pacquiao having that killer instinct anymore. Mayweather only made him look ordinary because Pacquiao allowed him to. The bottom line is I don't think he is willing to take the punishment or risks he once used to, which is why I am saying at this point he should just retire. He looked like Mosley did against Mayweather, just wanted to do more but couldn't. In Shane's case it was age, in Pacquiao's case I think it was fear of getting KOd again. Leading up to the fight both Oscar and Shane emphasized on the fact that what affected them was age, they just could no longer do what they once could. They wanted to but they couldn't. I think the same is happening with Pacquiao except for him its a fear of being knocked out cold again. Remember he is typically the smaller fighter going up against bigger guys who if catch him right will KO him.
He is too gun shy imo I like Matthysse,Crawford,Brook,Thurman, and Khan all to beat him.
he recently outclassed bradley who is the equal of those guys
mayweather made him gunshy. most people can't do that
No but I hope he no longer faces Algieri level opponents because he's good enough to beat most of the other top welters
He is too gun shy imo I like Matthysse,Crawford,Brook,Thurman, and Khan all to beat him.
I too want to see Paulie's azz kicked.
He just gets mad becuz Pac beat up his father, Cotto, whom he worships.
Malignaggi is such low hanging fruit, though.
He should call it quits, same with Mayweather to be honest. I think they should both have a farewell bout to end their career on a lighter note.
They're both strips ahead of the rest of the people in their division but their decline is becoming more and more noticeable. Floyd is no longer as sharp as he used to be; his boxing IQ covers that up. Pacquiao body can no longer sustain his style (for one reason or another).
I don't believe for a moment that Pacquiao's shoulder hindered him in the ring but I do believe he is fighting with niggling injuries and I don't believe that will change because he is still trying to fight the same way. Youth or science would have staved off the wear and tear of fighting at such a high intensity; however now that he has aged and or doing random drug testing the consequences of his style will crop up.
Not just yet IMO. It would be criminal for a fighter as good as him to go out on a loss.
He's not got old over night just because he lost to Mayweather..it's just a case of him losing to the best fighter around.
He's one of the best around himself, and still has it in him to beat most of the WW's around right now.
He will probably have to think about it soon though. He's no spring chicken, and he is a 65 fight veteran with over 400 rounds in the bank. If he's going to carry niggling injuries, and has stuff like faith and politics taking big parts of his life..then maybe it will be a case of 'sooner rather than later'.
His opponent pool may be another factor. If he's going to fight 'in house'..he won't face Bradley or JMM again. So Ruslan aside, not many other names come to mind.
That said, ability wise. He's still quality, and has got some more good wins in him.
I don't think he has to retire because Floyd beat him in a boxing contest.
There is no one he is going to fight that is really like Floyd, Crawford is the best counter puncher he can fight and that is probably where he will get pushed in time. I can see why that would be the end for him, but I do think Crawford has some holes and if he goes into a fight with Manny thinking what Floyd did he would easily be able to replicate he could be in for a rude awakening.
It will end badly eventually though the longer he goes it become inevitable, but as it is now he is still a marketable enough guy and he doesn't take that much damage as he currently fights.
Are people retarded? He looked ordinary against the best fighter of this era, he beats most other fighters so why the heck should he retire? If he loses one more then yes but not because he lost to Floyd.
Floyd sees the end though. Not sure Manny does.
Father time gets them all....
True, but until manny gets really bad losses piling up I want to him fight..
The guy basically dominated in 4 out of his last 6 fights..If starts losing the algieri/rios fights then yeah hang em up
