He had something like 15 consecutive title defenses in devastating fashion before the Froch fight. Did Carl just have the perfect style to beat him or was he not that great after all.
remember prior to Froch many had him in the top10 p4p for many years..

His title run was rather convenient... taking place when all of the top fighters in the division were tied up in the super6 tournament.
Both, maybe. I don't know, maybe not. Who knows, hindsight is no more 20/20 than foresight. We just have enough pieces to script a narrative at that point.
I think Bute was a very weak champion; a place holder. He was on par with Felix Sturm or Baldomir (and that is not meant as a swipe at Floyd). But winning a title is never a fluke, so I guess he was a solid fighter. He did beat some quality opponents.
He was B level at best, but he was matched really well. Anybody following his career closely knew the bubble will bust once he stepped up. When the Froch fight was announced I just knew there is no way it will NOT end with a stoppage in favor of Carl of course.
SMW was very deep back then and all you got to do is look at the names he faced.
Bute was given the 'Gary Russell Jr' experience; everyone seemed to understand that he was a quite talented fighter, but he was put in with, and built off of, soft competition. Carl Froch was the farthest thing from a soft touch, and Bute was overwhelmed with what he was facing.
Bute fought a so-so guy, and then stepped into the ring for another battle tested fight, this time at 175; he lost the fight, but it wasn't an utter blowout loss. Bute simply needs to step back in with another solid guy and see.
As long as he's physically fit to fight, he'll have a chance.
He was a B- fighter that got ko'd by Andrade. He wasn't horrible but everyone fell in love with his record. Nowhere near pound 4 pound. And never was top 3 or 4 at 168.
He wasn't nearly as good as the rankings tried to say he was, but he wasn't bad, and Froch definitely ruined him. It's obvious Bute is shook to his very soul ever since.

The style / power + the fact that many people had stated he had little but a punchers chance.
He knew there was no coming back to the big time, had he lost. Unlike the majority of fighters that say they will and don't turn up - Carl went for it.
overrated, b-level fighter.
arguably froch's best win :lol1:
it still hurts. this still hurts.

I don't understand why people automatically slam Bute as not being a good fighter due to how he loss to Froch.
There's been numerous offense-talented fighters with bad chins. It's a flaw, but they're still quality fighters. Hearns, Khan, Linares all suffered similar devastating KO losses, but were proven talented offensive fighters.
His career speaks for itself with his amateur pedigree and pro accomplishments. Really awkward, powerful guy with a great uppercut and very good at feinting. He did dominate Bika and Johnson. Pretty much performed as well or even better with the same guys that fought Froch and Ward before the Froch fight. Seem like Froch ruined him a little bit to me or he just had his time and it passed?
