Let me first start off by apologizing for bringing up Duran with Ortiz, I know I can face a perm ban for it. But I wasn't old enough to live through The Duran, Hagler, Hearns, &Leonard timeframe. I've seen the fights but didn't live through the (past) reactions. So someone with knowledge of the time (era) did Duran get dissed like current fighters do/have for quitting? If so, what changed things? How did u feel fan or not at the time?
Duran was all balls. That's why it made no sense and people still argue about it to this day. Ortiz has done it more than once.

Yes Duran did have to take lots of sh*t over that and the proof is your giving him sh*t over it after all these years. There are some differences. Duran quit from frustration while Ortiz quit from a beating. Duran was one of the greatest fighters in history. He had so many fights in which he showed tremendous courage before his quit and after his quit that most fans forgive him that one quit. Ortiz showed courage in a few fights but mostly he has shown to be an unreliable quitter with very little will to win. Ortiz can punch very hard but nobody will ever call him a great fighter or bet much money on him when he fights.
another duran fan boy..you guys are like cancer! duran quit because ray was beating him like a little child. no way does duran quits unless he was getting beat up!
ray made him quit, tommy koed him cold, benitez made him look like an amateur, and hagler beat him pillar to post. thats 1-5 against the best fighters of his era..
A past prime lightweight vs welter and middleweight greats.
Duran was up after 12 vs Hagler. If he woulda weseled out of a 15 rounder like Leonard did he woulda won. Pillar to post my ass.
Yeah, you can tell it does. That fight will always be remembered for Duran quitting, not for Leonard winning the rematch.

Leonard seems like nice/honest guy, I bet as a fighter tho it probably eats away at him...

Probably because Duran had won 72 ****ING FIGHTS by the time of "No Mas." And speaking of that the term "No Mas" is literally linked with Duran forever, so how is that not backlash?
i think he got it worst his country would threat him on the streets victor got off easy he just got people on the internet talking **** bout him roberto endured a **** load of **** in his country
None of them got the same backlash as today , because off no internet .
They would not be the heroes they are today if the internet was around back then , they would be bashed from pillar to post by opposing fans like every top liner today .
Quite pitiful really .
I thought the 30-30 was very good, but then again SRL is my all time favorite.
No comparison between Duran and Ortiz. Partly because Duran was a great champion already. If Floyd or Manny pulled that May 2, like Duran, they'd always be associated with it and it'd be way bigger than Ortiz because he's a relative nobody. BUT it still wouldn't be as bad as Duran because boxing isn't as big anymore. Like somebody said above, it's a fringe sport. But because people have so many choices now in everything, nothing seems as important anymore. Remember when the Olympics were a big deal? Nobody really gives a ***** anymore.
Problem with the 30 for 30 is they made it seem like it still bothers duran and Leonard would forgive him and tell him it's ok. When the reality is duran don't care one bit but it still drives Leonard crazy.

yes, even more so because he was a better, more popular fighter - that wasn't even taking a beating or even losing.
That thing was terrible. They built up the meeting like this giant thing, but it was the same diarrhea excuse we've known forever. And they barely showed what Duran had to say. Instead we heard Leonard's voice over for half of Duran's speech.
It was a little too focused on Leonard, but overall it is well worth watching. It also gives an excellent idea of how popular boxing was back then compared to today. Leonard - Duran 1 and 2 were front page news in newspapers and magazines, it was headline news on television, it made headlines around the world.
I will def check it out bro. Thanks!!
There are a number of ESPN 30for30 films and all those I have seen have been excellent documentaries. If you are at all interested in soccer, I recommend watching The Two Escobars. Incredible documentary.

I disagree. People are a lot more forgiving today than they were then.
That ****ed up Duran's whole life.
In the age of mass media, somebody quitting in a fringe sport is just a blip on the screen.
Back then this fight meant a lot more.
I actually think it would be worse now if the exact same turn of events happened today. People are the exact same *******s they were then for the most part, when it comes to things like that.
Now it could not just be in some HBO fight like Ortiz-Maidana it would have to be in a huge event with huge stars but those dudes would never live it down.
