Would anybody even remember who he was? A lot of fighters careers are not appreciated until their careers are a done. I know GGG hasnt been around for a long time but for all the hype he has and being a unified champ, how would he be remembered?
Kev you gotta give Kovalev his due. Stevenson is lineal, no one can take that from him except in the ring, but Kovalev is the best LHW in the world. A win over Dawson doesn't hold much weight compared to victories over Hopkins and Pascal, especially when Dawson was euthanized by Ward one fight prior. I know you have a lot of respect for Dawson, but Ward ended his prime.
The only guy Kovalev has had trouble with is Darnell Boone. He won the rematch by KO. Stevenson was KO'd by Boone before avenging it with a KO. Stevenson also struggled with Fonfara.
Kovalev is clearly #1 at LHW IMO.
I said I think Kovalev is the best at 175.
I am also saying that Stevenson did win his Ring title fairly. Dawson fell off badly, but he had won The Ring title from Hopkins, who won it from Pascal. I don't like Stevenson, i'm not a fan of his, but he should get a fair shake. Let's see him defend his Ring title vs Kovalev. He's talking about fighting Kovalev this year so hopefully that happens. There was no wrongdoing in Stevenson winning The Ring title, he was actually underdog and predicted as a loser of the Dawson fight by TKO by most fans. I used GGG and MW as an example, where GGG is the absolute best MW and Cotto just has a paper Ring title. AS does not have a paper title, he won it fair and square from an actual champ and not a guy who kept it via robbery (Martinez).
so too you Stevenson is the real champion and not kovalev?
The best fighter at 175 is Kovalev, with the eye test, but let's not forget Stevenson won The Ring title fair and square from Chad Dawson. Dawson beat Hopkins, who beat Pascal, who beat Dawson for the vacant Ring title. I know fans including myself, have a different opinion of who the best fighter at 175 is, but the truth is nothing shady happened there when AS won the title. He simply beat the best to get the title of being the best.
IMO it's a lot different at MW. Because something shady did happen there, when Murray seemingly beat Martinez for The Ring/WBC title but got robbed. Unofficially, GGG just beat the guy that should have been The Ring champ with fair officiating. GGG is unofficially the best guy there, only unofficially because of corrupt judging in Martinez vs Murray. Stevenson on the other hand is officially the champion of the division and he did it fair and square with no robberies. Unfortunately Kovalev will have to beat Stevenson to become the best guy there officially. I say unfortunately because it appears to be a tough fight to make, but I got a feeling it happens this year.
Andre Ward, a Christian family man, a proud countryman, and olympic "Gold" medalist. Wards inactivity (legal issues) frustrates people and his refusal to become the "the bad guy" imo holds him back from stardom but as a person, he seems like someone you'd let watch your kids and support. He also has a better resume than GGG.
Andre Ward? The guy who sued his promoter because he was an ungrateful greedy little fck and lost three times? And the last thing I want for an ambassador of any sport is some religious nut bar who calls himself the son of god. I'd rather go to a nuthouse and grab someone who thinks he is Thor, son of Zeus!
He would make a lousy ambassador because for one thing, an ambassador has to travel the world, not lock himself up in Oakland.
By the way... the only thing holding him back from stardom is the fact that he has fought only twice in over three years and has no fight in sight. Some boxing ambassador he'd make.
If GGG keeps a level head and continues to work hard and train right, and do things right, he could beat middleweight contenders for the next 5 years.
By then he would be the best middleweight of all time. As of right now, he is the best middleweight and people think he can go onto become the greatest of all time. So should campaign at middleweight and not move up weight and do things there.
I'm not saying Cotto is better than GGG, I'm saying Cotto won the middleweight championship of the world and has not lost that title in the ring or retired. So GGG may look better but he is not the champion until he beats the champion. I'm sure they will fight fairly soon. In boxing things take months and years to materialize, not days and weeks.
so too you Stevenson is the real champion and not kovalev?

if ggg career ended today he would be remembered as a strong middleweight who never fought an elite fighter.
So who would be a better ambassador? Woman beater Floyd after he retires? Stevenson the enforcer pimp? Jermaine 'Brain Damage' Taylor might be a great NRA ambassador but not so good for boxing.
Give me someone better. And by the way, I didn't make the suggestion, I just happen to agree with it.

OK, I will agree GGG has some great characteristics as a person and a fighter but its all been seen and done before. Boxing needs something new, its sorta like Broner boxing dont need him we have Mayweather & when he retires that persona can retire with him.
& besides if he were a true ambassador, he wouldnt need the support/acceptance of Mexican fans to help boost him in the boxing world.

He would be a great ambassador for the sport. He is a gentleman, never trash talks anyone, doesn't have tattoos like a gang member from East LA or like a Russian mobster, doesn't walk to the ring with a dozen gangsta rap fools or Justin Bieber looking stupid, doesn't spout ridiculous things about how his god is so great and will fight anyone with the balls to get in the ring with him. What more could the sport ask for?

He'd be slightly below Salvador Sanchez. A good fighter who never really got to showcase his talent against the cream of the crop
Sorry dude but Sanchez fought some great fighters before his passing Azumah Nelson and Wilfredo Gomez. So I would say way below Sanchez
Ambassador? wow...

Geez, what a pointless thread.
Two things:
1. Why would a boxer be remembered if they retired before their biggest fights?
2. Most boxers won't be remembered at all. It's been a niche sport for the last 20 years.
Leave it to these so-called "boxing fans" to do everything they can to bash one of the most talented and exciting fighters in boxing, as well as maybe THE best ambassador for the sport.
Ambassador? wow...
If he retired today, he would be looked back upon as one of the greatest unrealized talents in boxing history. And that would not be his fault at all. Of course this it all totally irrelevant as he has many years of boxing left in his career and many other opponents to fight and destroy.
Cotto fought ONCE as a middleweight because Sergio thought he was to small and to stationary to win, so theres your champ. My guy has been fighting at the weight for years and has extended contracts to any one who is willing. You may think Cotto is some kind of Champ but the politics and money game have you fooled.
Anyone thinks by "Belts" doesn't have eyes to see who's the best and who's the fraud.
