Am I the only one who thinks tune-ups are just an excuse for fighters to fight weak comp and pad their records. I mean Leonard sat on the sidelines for 3 years and came back and fought perhaps the best fighter in the world at that time. If you don't know who I'm talking about I'll give you a hint, his nickname was Marvelous.
And even if you don't agree with the decision you can't deny the fact that it was a very close fight. But now days you have guys like Ward who needs two tunes just to fight a decent opponent. Seems like a waste of time to me. And Ward isn't the only one.
And also title defenses and tune up should not be in the same sentence. If a fight is considered a tune up the titles shouldn't be on the line, period point blank.
I would like to see a big fight get signed. Were almost a month and a half in the new year and still no big names signing to fight ome another...
Ward
floyd
pac
khan
no word on martinez
Kovalev vs pascal is like the only fight signed.
Canelo vs kirkland is a true showcase fight. Kirk dont even have a trainer. Dude should hire roach already
I only like tune-ups/stay busy fights if a guy needs to build some momentum or is off a long layoff or if a guy is fighting more than 3 times a year. You can't expect a guy to fight 4 tough fights a year.
I agree guys like leo or Garcia don't need no tune up ward neather it was his choice not to fight guys like Mike alvardo and Rosado need a fee tune ups
I think tune up should only be for fighters who fell off. What I mean by that is I think a former champion who recently lost, or someone who took a bad beating in the ring then yes they should have a tune up as their next fight to gauge where they are at. Who shouldent be fighting tune ups are Champions or anyone riding a solid winning streak.
Tune ups are a good time to work on some things inside the ring that you cannot risk working on against a top tier opponent. I'm okay with a tune up if that's not ALL you're doing...
