Why is Cotto ranked No.1 at Middleweight over Gennady Golovkin just because he beat Sergio Martinez.
Anybody knows that Golovkin could have done the same thing, but Martinez was too scared to get in the ring with him. Also, it is quite obvious that Golovkin would destroy Cotto…well at least that is what I think.
But the main reason for saying this is that Cotto is not even willing to defend his title at 160 pounds against other top middleweights. How can he call himself a champion when he hasn't even won a fight at that division.
Because he beat the #1 guy and now he is the 1# MW until proven otherwise in the ring not because GGG fans say otherwise. When GGG beats Cotto he will be number 1 or if Cotto vacates or looses to someone else.
carlos ****ing molina could've probably done the same thing that night vs sergio
But Cotto did and that's why he is ranked #1. Is he the best MW in the world? No. That's just the way it goes.
Cotto is officially the world lineal middleweight champ because he beat Martinez who was widely recognized as the world middleweight champ. You have to put the champion at #1 and his top challenger just below him. It doesn't mean that anybody seriously believes Cotto could beat GGG. Almost everybody knows GGG is the best middleweight in the world and the uncrowned true middleweight champion of the world.
Then it is rather silly and pointless wouldn't you say? But still they do it.
Men who know fine well that the lineal champ isn't the best will put him on top. Wtf for? it's so stupid.
Im looking at Stevs 175 run and Kovalevs run since being champ, from the top of my head, I dont think Kova defended his title against Campillo?
My point is an objective one, there isn't much in it. But if you all gotta hate then whatever
Well Boone was before Stevenson was champ.
Not hating, broadly in a agreement, but I think a proper rankings system unreliant on "lineal" stuff would have dropped Stevenson a place this year, perhaps even two.

How are going to include Boone, a guy Kovalev beat twice and not include Campillo?
Rankings are supposed to reflect the present. Stevenson is really where he is for beating Dawson in early 2013, it's 2015 already. His contribution this year is a laboured win over a lower top 10 guy in Fonfara, and a no-mark in Sukhotsky.
The point, however, is Stevenson could fight any bum he wanted under this rankings system and STILL retain the #1 position while Kovalev KO'd the entire top 10. It's a ridiculous system as gmc said.
I do agree though, that Golovkin has a stronger argument.

He beat Sergio Martinez, who was the lineal Middleweight Champ of the world.
Yes, not the most exciting or most hyped MW, that goes to Gennady Glovokin, but everyone knew Martinez as the true MW champ.

:bottle: cry me a river. they almost have the same amount of fights and are almost the same age yet cotto has accomplished more in his career. :boxing:
Laughing at Pacquiao snoring on the mat isn't passing credit to Mayweather. :pat:
so you never heard of the triangle theory Floyd fans blabbering about? :pat:
160 is an overrated division right now , the top guy Martinez when out with a bad knee , You have guys past their primes as champions in Cotto, Taylor , and Lee, a kid that just cameback already holding a belt in Jacobs..
GGG need to work on getting all those belts in 2015 so in 2016 he can move to 168
I understand the concept of lineal champion but it still doesn't seem right.
Name one fighter in middleweight who you believe would beat Golovkin at the moment. I know people say he hasn't fought anyone good but he has.
Geale, Macklin, Stevens, Rubio, Rosada are all good tough opponents. They are not elite but still Golovkin was able to DESTROY them without even breaking a sweat. Imagine what he would do to a smaller Cotto who is really a small junior middleweight.

There's a better argument for GGG > Cotto than Kovalev > Stevenson.
Stevenson since moving up to LHW has beaten:
Boone
Dawson LHW Lineal Champ having beaten Hopkins
Cloud former champ
Bellew worthy mandatory
Fonfara top 10 guy
Suhotsky
Kovalev:
Cleverly for WBO title
Sillakh hadn't recovered from his previous KO loss and the hype was dead
Agnew
Caparello
Hopkins already beaten by Dawson to lose HIS lineal title but had a decent come back
It's pretty much even stevens in all honesty. If Kovalev can build on it by having a better 2015, with better opponents in more emphatic wins and the two still don't fight, then there may be a changing in the rankings but otherwise no.
