So i was reading a little about Al Haymon last night and the nbc deal and the rumor is that his plans are to to bring real and big fights to free tv and get rid of ppv (which i dont see happening). I was thinkin at first it didnt make sense but then i got to thinking if this really was his plan he could completely cave GBP and Top Rank you got to think if hes doing free shows im guessing the ufc model somewhat and the rating start to soar and new fans come you would think more and more and more fighters will goto haymon. My guess is he will end up using mayweather promotions as the promoter. It would make sense why arum and oscar are working together and both bad mouthing haymon and also the richard shaefer drama it all actually makes sense. Not to mention you can almost tell haymon is saving the biggest fights for when he makes the move to nbc. Now i also read some fighters will stay at showtime so his nbc deal could be nothing more then what they are doing now with fox sports 1. But there is no doubt the industry is scared that haymon has a plan in the works to completely take over boxing. Now think about it obviously haymon is mostly considered bad for the sport as far as a fan perspective, but just for a minute think if he was able to monopolize the sport and keep taking all the good young fighters bury top rank and gbp as far as real competition for young popular fighters then i could see a ufc type thing with haymon working and growing the sport more then we have seen in decades. You got to think if he has everyone it no longer makes sense to baby them but to actually have them all fight eachother which i think hes just waiting for nbc to do. I just find it fascinating that haymon could actually be the best thing that happened to boxing in disguise of the villain and it just seems to me like oscar and bob are working together not to end the cold war like the pretend maybe a fight here or there but the real reason is because they are worried about what haymon is going to do. I dont know i just find it intriguing that we may of had haymon all wrong and he may actually make the sport better when all is said and done. Maybe its a dream but having all big name fighters under one banner who is willing to work with everyone but top rank anyway is a great thing for fans at least. Fighters not so much. Im sure this opens a pandoras box as most people cant stand the guy but im just playing devils advocate here curious what your guys thoughts are on a haymon led ufc type boxing world. Please keep mayweather and pac man bickering out of the thread, thanks
Haymon is marinating all big fights because he wants them on network TV.
That sounds like a legit plan to me that is completely in line with Haymon boxers' warrior mentality. War Haymon!
He ain't doing none of that. He's gonna match cans against his talent and ripoff the opponent when it is too close for comfort just like Arum does. Only problem is that more people will see it and get disgusted with boxing as a sport.
Put back until the start of March last I heard.
I have a feeling it will be a big flop. A bunch of overpriced mismatches, at least Haymon is the one paying for them.
Anyone who wants to see what a Haymon monopoly would look like need look no further than 2014. He had the stable, and he had the platform, and he delivered the worst year in boxing that anyone can remember.
How many times does he have to do the same thing before people will see what his model is? He will market his chosen fighters to death in that shitty urban music star way and put them in a real fight once every two years. 18 months at best.
And that's what he does when he has competition. Imagine if he didn't?
You'd probably be looking at two competitive fights for his 'stars' over half a decade. With 3-4 series of 'About Billions' in between.
That's the Haymon value proposition. He sells 'personalities' to morons and fans of the real thing can go fuck themselves. Just like the music industry.
Haymon's 'big plans'. You know who else has big plans? Peter Quillin.
2014 saw Oscar De La Hoya boot Schaefer and spit in the face of Espinoza. While Schaefer is in litigation, Haymon did what he could to keep things in a holding pattern, still showcasing guys on Showtime.
Oscar settles the case, gets booted off of Showtime with his 20-40 fighters, and Espinoza, working with Mayweather/GYM/Dibella/Sampson/Goosen/Tyson/Warriors and Haymon, fills out the full slate of Showtime dates, with Schaefer acting as a consultant to help put together the big PPV fights.
i have a feeling (also hoping) GBP gets back all their fighters.
what schaeffer/haymon did was illegal.
purposely let fighters contracts expire so gbp spent the time and money developing fighters they didn't have under contract.
really shady stuff.
Golden Boy better be ready to put up +$50m in guaranteed money for "all of their fighters", because two can play that game.
Schaefer/Haymon did good business; Haymon had a top-notch outfit for his fighters to fight on and Schaefer was able to get access to near 85% of the fighters in boxing's marquee divisions while not having to carry the overhead of guaranteed contracts.
open your eyes
Haymon gets a lot of flack for the matchups he made this year (and rightfully so). I think he wanted to play it safe with his biggest stars this year, so he could put them in these big fights next year on NBC and control the money w/o GBP in the way. He's not stupid and he should know that putting Garcia with the Salkas of the world wont be beneficial to him in the long run
The Haymon thinking is pretty simple:
-Beyond Mayweather/Pacquiao/Cotto/Alvarez, there aren't really any other fighters that are bringing the type of money to require PPV.
-With the continued development of guys like Thurman, Broner, Charlo twins, Garcia, LSC, Wilder, Mares, and the ton of promising fighters on the rise, Haymon needs to leverage more premium dates.
-There will likely be a maximum range of 12-14 Showtime Championship Boxing dates.
-Oscar does bad business, so having his guys on those FS1 cards no longer makes much sense.
The NBC deal gives him access to four more Showtime Championship Boxing-type dates and twenty Golden Boy Live-type dates.
If the viewership numbers deliver the way that most people hope, CBS Sports, NBC Sports and Fox Sports 1 are likely to put in bids to pick up the full broadcast rights and expand the dates (30-40 GBL-type dates, 5-10 SCB-type dates), with Showtime still being the default platform for airing the occasional PPV-level showdown.
You put the screws to Oscar, HBO, Top Rank, and any other outfit that refuses to do business with Haymon.
good move by haymon if he does it...
from what i have read
he spent 20+ million to buy airtime, sorta like how infomercials do it..
With that type of money spent, he is gonna need to make big fights like broner-lucas, etc
And in the future his plan is to ditch ppv and go with an online streaming service similar to how WWE has rolled out the WWE network.. You pay 9.99 a month and get access to all the big fights... Cheaper than ppv, and the money would got straight to haymon,,
If he cat get a few hundred thousand people to buy the streaming network, the money rolling in each months will be huge.....
When is the NBC announcement coming? Didn't they talk of a superbowl show.
This is the problem with Haymon, he runs things but is not a promoter.

Have you seen the ESPN/FS1 property of Haymon cards those have been awful don't see how they're getting any better of course have some good ones it's the law of average especially early but after the first 6 months and beyond it'll be typical trasin says logic.
Yeah Haymon has a lot of fighters and majority aren't very good/appealing his best ones will be saved for Showtime bcse that's a higher purse..subscription networks aren't going anywhere they have too much revenue.
I think the last Haymon card on FS1 was the night before May/Maidana 2 when Charlo, Spence, J Rock, ect was on a card. They FS1 cards after have been with Oscars roster of his cousin, Joseph Diaz, Orazco, ect.
I think Haymon is done with FS1 which is why he's had a bunch of cards in this month alone. He had the ESPM card with Trout and Tarver. The night after Lara/Smith and the Khan/Alexander card. Last night with Stevenson and tonight card on Showtime Extreme. A total of five cards in ten days.
i have a feeling (also hoping) GBP gets back all their fighters.

You can't force fighters to go into a contract with a promoter when they never signed in the first place. That's what the $50mill in damages that Oscar's suing Schaeffer for is about. It's interesting that Haymon's allegedly trying to help settle this suit when his names not directly on it.
I just wonder if we'll see a class action suit against Haymon in a couple of years if he's not able to deliver for a number of his star fighters. Thurman & Wilder both had to turn down multi-million dollar offers from Roc Nations as well as the Quillin situation. I don't think Roc Nation is done either, and will make a move in the future on guys like J-Rock & Spence.
He's treading in that gray area of the Ali Act - 'promoter/manager', yet has the clause in everyone's contract that gives him total control over them regardless of what they want. It's all good now because they have the Showtime bankroll to keep everyone happy...
ya but it will probably be set up similar to wwe network where if u pay the monthly fee no extra charge for ppv everything on file to watch at anytime all that its actually the only real way to go to combat streaming i actually love that idea plus it gives us boxing fans a boxing channel i hope he follows thru with that
Yeah, I can envision the similairty to the wwe network model. It's still technically a PPV model, but subscription based and it's probably a lot better than the one-offs with $50-75 USD fees.
I think the major thing is, Haymon needs to produce good match ups for whatever he is doing to get adopted/consumed enough. I question Haymon and what he's doing, but it's largely because of his uncertainty and mystery, coupled with him rarely willing to provide the big fights boxing fans demand.
TS is really really really reaching. The overriding theme of your diatribe is that Haymon, monopolizing the sport of boxing, will be great for the fans because he will be forced to make his fighters fight each other.
1. Nothing good can come from a monopoly, of any kind.
2. If everyone is under one promotional company, of course they have to fight each other but it doesn't mean they will be evenly matched.
What makes you think he will start making the big fights on free TV. Last I checked, UFC still has PPV events.
That had to do with Main Events roster. Curtis Stevens and Steve Cunningham there biggest draws. Kovalev was on HBO.
Guys like Julian Williams and Errol Spence will probably be on the NBC Sports cards. Charlos, Matthysse, Santa Cruz, Ortiz, Berto I can see them on the big NBC cards That's only if Haymon still has his fighters on Showtime.
Have you seen the ESPN/FS1 property of Haymon cards those have been awful don't see how they're getting any better of course he'll have some good ones it's the law of average especially early but after the first 6 months and beyond it'll be typical trash says logic.

boxing doesn't work on network tv.
the unpredictable length of fights is one. plus demographics of fans is not desirable. i.e. male and old
It worked pretty well in the UK. I don't see unpredictable length of fights as a real deal-breaker, just put filler fights in with guys who are ready to go at that time.
I do think Haymon will find a way to mess it up though, his financial self-interest usually trumps everything leaving the fans frustrated.
