HBO PPV, is it a big sell or a flop?
Both of their last 2 headlining PPV with Lara and Sergio did about 700,000 combined totals.
Whichever date the event will happen, how is it looking?
Unless it's Pacquaio vs Mayweather, there aren't going to be any 1 mill PPVs. The PPV model has died down BIG TIME. Anything above 600k is great.
I disagree. I think PPV's are down because the fights on PPV lately haven't been that good. Not to mention there were too many PPV's this year. 2 Pacquiao's, 2 Mayweathers, 2 Nelo's, 1 Cotto. My combined PPV bill this year was probably $500 bucks.
However if you don't have any major PPV's until the Cotto/Canelo fight, and you do a good job of advertising the fight, I say it will make people open up their wallets again and buy.
Can we add ggg vs lee to get a build up for the winner of cotto canelo. Assuming ggg can beat muray and ready in 3 months. But alone with a solid card it flirts with 1mill
400-500k REALISTICALLY!
Factoring in How Canelo PPV's did with Showtime and how Cotto vs Martinez did...I think if they can reach 500k that is a SUCCESS!
I'm not going to get into the "casual" market because Cotto/Canelo don't need it. According to you they can't get Asian, black or white fans to watch. Okay that just means they won't get 2 million buys, Hispanics are the biggest market and that's what they're after. If you make a circle and split it in half one side would say Hispanic the other would say ever other race, that's the reality of the boxing landscape. And when you really think about it, the only countries in the western hemisphere that don't speak Spanish are Canada and the US.
All that being said Cotto made a splash with the Asian market fighting Manny. He also has some black fans at least most of my friends make sure not to miss him when he's on HBO or PPV, they're the same with Canelo as well. I wouldn't call your view pessimistic, it's illogical to think they'll only get 500k buys. They each have their own fanbase, combing their last buy rates they are at 650k and it's proven how much more people buy PPV when it's two draws and a competitive matchup. (Or perceived by people that way.)
All ppv fighters need casuals to reach the real high numbers IMO.
Thats not what I said or was trying to say. I just feel like they will not pull them(casuals) in numbers needed to push this fight to at least 1mill buys.
If I came across like I was saying either Cotto or Canelo has no fans of other races that is way off from what I was trying to say as well. Just that I don't see that from them in high numbers from casual fans knowing who they are and willing to pay to see them fight.
We shall see cause no matter the date it seems like this fight will happen.
What I am saying like I said before is that this fight doesn't have that much potential to pull in casual fans or cross racial lines to where blacks, whites, asians, etc. feel the need to buy this ppv. Which is the real reason PPV buys reach high numbers not because of hardcore fans or the fan bases of each fighter.
I feel most casual fans feel like Cotto and Canelo lost to both Floyd and Manny. They know Floyd dominated Canelo and Cotto got dominated by Manny. So that leads casual fans to know that neither of them is the man to beat Floyd or Manny. Which also leads them to feel why should I PAY to watch this fight?
Cotto and Canelo have shown they are draws with cross over known to mainstream fighters (Floyd & Manny). Neither of them have shown that they are cross over known to mainstream fighters themselves (Cotto & Canelo).
So either you're the "dumb" one which I will not say cause I don't know you.
But I will say these 2 things: We can agree to disagree and I may be taking a pessimistic view and you an optimistic view.
I am willing to bet some points on this fight NOT doing 1mill in buys?

I think it will appeal to the casual just as much the hardcore fans, because they know this would be something special. A few years ago cotto/cheato 2 pulled in 600k and that fight was built around the revenge and possible use of plater..canelo is definately more popular then margarito and more beloved by the fans, just as much women tune into his fights as do men...he has that sex appeal...sort of how it was for oscar who was doing 900k against the mayorgas of the world......besides that canelo would have the oppurtunity to become MW champion, and a possible fight down the road with GGG.
its a different economical time now days and the ppvs have sky rocketed in price, but with both fighters popularity and the likliness that this fight will be something special, it will definately be possible to be close or break 1mill.... it packs the "it" factor!
The bold is where we disagree.
You not "seeing" it means you are choosing not to or just dumb, I hate to say it. When you put 2 draws together it always does more than what they each did on their own and by more than double. According to you Manny wouldn't be able to draw sh*t with Floyd because he's last fights have doen 300k, 800k and 300k. In fact that should be example enough that the numbers nearly triple... Cotto with Margarito 600k, with Floyd nearly triple at 1.5 million. Floyd with Maidana did 800k, Floyd got 2.2 million with Canelo who is a draw and got nearly triple the buys. I can go look at more examples but I'm not because you have to be just ignoring numbers to think these guys won't draw.
When Cotto and Canelo fight they each get fans to buy their fights. When they face each other both fans buy the fight and then non fans of the fighters will buy because it's a good scrap and they are fans of boxing. That's why the buys triple for people with draws because they get each of their fanbase buying and both of their names on the marquee draws out people who like good fights and big names not just name.

Tops out at 700K at best.
This is not a fight casuals will flock to and its not a fight that will cross racial lines for hardcore fans or casual fans. By that I mean other races of people will not make it their business to watch/order this fight in large numbers.
Casuals once they hear the names will only know that both lost to Floyd one of which was dominated and one also lost to Manny in which he was dominated.
So someone who feels this fight does 1 mill explain to me without this fight having cross over casual and racial success how it does 1mill or over.

Lara vs Canelo numbers doesn't back that up. I know Lara doesn't have a big name at all but 300K says a lot about this so called following.
Cotto got between 300-350K for Martinez a fighter with a name not a big name but he is known.
Now you trying to tell me that between the 2 of them they will come up with 400K worth of buyers to a ppv between the 2 of them.
I just don't see it at all.
