I think the reason for all the arguing on here is we have different views of what boxing it...to be it is not just 2 men throwing punches..anyone can throw a punch..boxing is hitting and not getting hit, using angles and thinking. Boxing is a science not just someone throwing punching that is simply fighting(in my opinion)
well the bottom line is it is still two men vent on hitting each other like gladiators...
and like gladiators these fighters can device ways that suits their style...
boxing is also called the sweet science, yes.....
but saying it is sweet science does not mean we are entitled to say which style is best..or discredit one style...i like pizza you may like burgers...no problem..
we are not the one on top of the ring...we are just spectators....taking time out to watch boxing to enjoy what we could enjoy in this life as and when we can...
cheers!!
A modern day gladiator sport which gives everyone the chance to test their mettle, prove their worth, display their skills, show their heart, spill some blood and reign as champion amongst men.
This is my box....
I love the one on one combat in the ring. I don't like to break boxing down to one approach. There are many different styles, and each fighter uses his own. It's the combination of skill, will and perseverance that I love to overcome your opponent using whatever style you choose. What these men do in the ring isn't something that normal people can do. You see what these men are made of and who they are. It's the ultimate sport.
what separates boxing from 2 men just throwing punches at each other..this is the sport you love...why??
Boxing to me is a chess match between two men's mind and body. The chess moves are fists, body movement, and mid round adjustments. The mental strategy is the training camp, the trainer's mind, and the experience of the fighter. Boxing is beautiful. Boxing is art. Boxing is competition in it's most instinctful form.

Anyone can throw a ball, are they all basketball/football/baseball players?
It is the combat sport with the deepest talent pool, the highest possible spoils for the victor and the worst possible consequences for the vanquished. It has the highest of stakes in all sports, period.
There is no "toe hold" in Boxing. There is no armbar submission from an opportune grab of the wrist in Boxing. It does not allow for some locks or pinches and restricts others in a false claim of "Ultimate Fighting" or "Street Fighting". It holds ideals above those concepts.
It is the most gentlemen method of combat, and yet all cultures can agree on its manliness. Indeed, it is the core of manliness. A showcase where the questions of manhood are decided between two men who claim superiority over all others: In a battle of fisticuffs who will fall to the will and the skill of their opponent? Truly, "Quien es el mas macho?"
I love that line. Lupe Contreras nailed it perfectly. "Veremos quien es el mas macho", that is what boxing is.
Boxing is, was, and will always be the ultimate sport.
Boxing is two men fighting in a ring with gloves on. Some fight toe to toe others move around and try to hit without getting hit. Some fans like one style others like the other one. It's all boxing at the end of the day.

Correct me if I'm wrong...but even "fighting" you're trying to hit and not be hit, right?
Imo the only thing that seperates boxing from "fighting" is the mentality that it is a sport going into the fight:
- you get paid to do what you do
- there are rules you follow
- you usually don't channel anything personal towards your opponent, it's just another opponent you need to beat.
How you want to get over that obstacle is your choice...
If you want to get "cute" with it like a Mayweather or etc, or if you want to end the fight quick like a One Time Thurman.
As long as the demeanor of professionalism remains the same the way you get from point a to point b is still "boxing."

Cuz It's 2 men throwing punches at each other
Yup. I agree. Two men usually trying to beat each other up, but still have a lot of respect for each other. Like a fair one in the back alley for bragging rights without cowardly weapons.
My East Coast knows about a "fair one."
