Back to "the punch vs the tap" issue

i thought ruslan edge it, but won't complain about the decision. but really, algieri's punches were feather taps. how could you land double the amount of your opponents and not even swell cut or bleed your opponents face much? and 2 judges were from newyork, as is algieri, so you have to wonder.

Anybody who doesn't score power is an idiot. Plain and simple. In my opinion, the guy who does more damage in a round wins that round. That said, Provo probably didn't deserve this fight. He landed harder punches but wasn't consistent with it throughout the fight. When scoring a round you should ask yourself "Who would I rather have been in that round?". Would your rather take 10 feather-duster shots that don't do any damage whatsoever or 4-5 bombs. Poor power should be penalised because very weak shots are ALWAYS the result of bad punching technique. Is that a fact? Because punchers are born, not "made".

Listen, Provo was even (in) the fight because of one lucky shot from the 1st round. Real talk. If he did not land that one shot that dropped Algieri and messed up his eye, he may have been combed. The bad eye actually made the fight closer than it would have been if Algeiri was healthy.

Ruslan hit hard against Alvardo and Bradley but against say Algirei or Herrera he doesnt hit hard, so how can you call his punches hard punches? and Bradley has KD over granit chin hard punching Abregu and Herrera has a unofficial clean cut bullying victors over garcia but they are considers featers punchers. You just have to call the fight how it is, not by what you think is happening. People always like, Ruslan hits hard and look how he hitting this guy but then "this guy" is not even bulging lol. call the fights how you see it not what you thinking is happening internally sort of speak. They were knocking him off balance, so they must have had something behind them.

The latest split decision where provo lost got some to think of another bad scoring/judging brouhaha... this got me to revisit the issue of how one is to judge over mean or big punches landed and the so called "feather tap"...... your views on this..pls Algieri's upper cuts and jabs were snapping Provos head back, you call that a slap? Algieri wasn't "feather tapping." The guy with less power isn't "tapping" just because he has less power. Algieri was throwing hard and often snapping Ruslan's head back. Devon Alexander is tapping. Chris Algieri was not.

Yeah but weisfeld's card was awful, I think he only gave algieri 3 rounds.. I agree with you that it was a close fight either way I was very confused by this. All I could ask myself was "what the hell kind've fight is this guy watching?" To give Provodnikov so many rounds when he was getting outpunched, basically landing 1 for every 8-10 punches landed on him was insane too me. I guess it just came down to quality vs quantity in their eyes. I think Max Kellerman even said something like "if only there was a magic way to tell which punches caused more damage" or something like that. Maybe boxers need to wear force sensitive helmets and body suits to measure the pounds per square inch for every punch, lol. That way they can actually tell which punches tip the scale and which barely do anything.

^^^This is a smart man right here; no way I'm giving a guy a rd because he landed 3 hard punches over guy who 18 crisp punches. very well said and point noted... just for a teaser, let us look at the scenarios below: if A decked B with 3 hard punches, we are to give A a 10-8 score for the round, right!? and if B decked A on the next round with his 18 crisp punches, are we to give B a 10-8 score or more!?

That judge was horrible, worst score since someone gave canelo a draw vs Floyd. I had it 114-112 for ruslan, but have no issue with the 114-112 algieri. yes.... that kind of comment on the fight being close where it could go either way and that an issue between "few" hard punches and plenty of "taps" comes into play is the reason for this thread... glad i am getting very good and decent responses from you guys...

I score on punches landed, who takes control of the rounds, and even defense impacts the way I score a fight. I favor any punch other than the jab that lands. Intangibles like speed and power benefit a fighter to either land first, overwhelm, or ware down their opponent. It's complete BS for one to judge on intangibles when they're opponent is out landing them and making them completely miss. If we judge on intangibles like punch power then why even bother watching boxing? If we judge on intangibles then the winner would be obvious before the fight is even signed. Going into the fight we knew Provo had the power advantage big whoop. The fight could of gone either way, I guess. But any margin higher than 115-111 is ridiculous. One judge had it 117-109 for Ruslan... Algieri boxed Ruslan's ears off. It's plain and simple. He landed more punches in pretty much every round and controlled the fight with his ring generalship. Ruslan landed the occasional hard hook but not enough to be winning rounds.

I think power def plays apart.. If a guy is landing hard thudding shots like ruslan was early then yeah I score it for him, but if he is only landing 1 or 2 a round and the other guy is constantly moving, jabbing and overall sharper, then i score it for him..

It would of made sense if Provodnikov's power actually threw Algieri off his game, but that was not the case. Algieri performed consistently through all 12 rounds, I'm almost positive for any one sequence/exchange that Bradley stayed in longer exchanges with Provo.

Eye swelling = caused by ONE punch, bad luck for Algieri + a great punch by Provo. Look at it this way, should we really be scoring for punching power? How would the fight be if Provodnikov had power equal to Algieri? How would the fight be if Algieri had power equal to Provodnikov? It was a BOXING match.
